  1. Thought I'd do a public service announcement by documenting what it takes to install a topcase on a 2019 Niken GT. I researched between the Yamaha top case and the Givi monokey topcase and decided on the Givi in case I decide to swap with Givi hard panniers in the future  and want to use a single key.

I called up Givi USA here in Charlotte, NC to confirm part number for the section that needs to be attached to the tail and Givi USA confirmed that the appropriate part was SR2144. Although I found an online reference to SR2143 which appears to be an older version for 2018 Niken(???).  Wasn't sure about compatibility so I stuck with Givi recommendation.

At the time of writing, could not find this part anywhere in the US. For some reason it was sold out everywhere. I had to order it from Carpi Moto in Genoa Italy to ship via DHL to me. Delivery speed was amazing given that I placed the order on a Thursday and it arrived the following Monday. I fully expected pandemic to delay it considerably more and was pleasantly surprised at delivery speed.

Next up, base plate and top case.

  2. Is this normal for Yamaha with a gas opening designed like this?

I did my first fill up the other night at my local has station and the fuel pump failed to turn off by itself as it approached full.

My '04 BMW R1150R and Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6E had a different design so wasn't sure if this was standard on the Yamaha or unique to the Niken?

  3. Was reviewing my owners manual and saw the following regarding tire recommendations. Is everyone keeping their stock tire recommendations or are you switching? If switching what are you switching to?  I saw on Webike Japan that they actually offer Michelin Pilot tires for front and back.

A lot of riders swear by them.  I tried them and personally didn't like them only for the fact that they made the grip diameter too large for my liking.  They cushion the grips for sure but I like a 'sportier' feeling small grip diameter.

Did you end up keeping it stock or did you find an alternative?

Where do folks go to get ideas on accessories for the Niken?  Here in the US I generally turn to Revzilla, Twisted Throttle, or the Yamaha US site for ideas.

I stumbled across this site in Japan that had access to stuff I've never seen before elsewhere.

    webike_fb_logo.gif

World's largest online store of Motorcycle parts. Huge stock of custom...

    Any other suggestions?

Has everyone with a Niken installed a tank protector?  I'm not so sure I need one given the upright seating position on the Niken and the matte paint finish. My aerostich suit zippers have a cloth overlap in them that prevents them from rubbing  against the gas tank.  If yes what kind?

  5. So first priority for accessory upgrades was a battery tender connector.

Second for me is a waterproof and lockable hard case. After I washed my bike the other night the contents in my panniers were moist. No way would I put a laptop or tablet in  there even if it were in a dry bag.

Givi v47 Monokey top case, Monokey M9 plate, and Givi E134S Backrest Pad For V47 Top Cases on order from Revzilla.

Carpimoto.it is supplying a SR2144 - Givi SR2144 Yamaha Niken GT Rear Rack specific for Monokey or Monolock Cases (works with M5, M9A, M9B, M8A, M8B, or M5M or M6M). For some reason the SR2144 is sold out everywhere in the US. I confirmed with Givi USA that this was the correct part.

Third upgrade will be connecting a Neutrino power distribution module from Arboreal systems to handle my heated gear and temperature settings, in addition to future plans for wiring  a Valentine One radar detector as well as auxiliary driving lights.

Our vehicle power distribution modules work for many applications...

Fourth will be Barkbuster hand guards for winter riding.

Fifth will be GPS and mount - most likely a Zumo.

Looks like tourandride.com has some Givi stuff for the Niken. Motostorm.it has a bit more. I have used Webike, and they are good.

Just ordered a Givi rack from Motostorm.it because they were all sold out here in the US. Good recommendation! Thank you!

So much for Bike Market's (now revised ) predictive powers;  Visordown (  http://www.visordown.com/motorcycle-news-new-bikes/2018-yamaha-niken-price-announced ) says the "announced price" for the Niken is 13,499 GBP ($18,185 USD).  Leaves me a shocked and disappointed. While the Tracer 900 earns kudos for high value to price, the Tracer Niken seems aimed at the "gotta be first" to have the most expensive bit of high tech kit crowd - usually well represented at Ducati dealerships. (Editorial rant over)

Visordown editor Alan Dowds says he will (by now has) ride the Niken Thursday  (5/17/2018) and will report on the experience ASAP.  You can stay tuned to Visordown for their ride report and more information.

As of September 2020, US prices for 2019 new Yamaha Niken GT run anywhere from as low as $13,400 to as high as $17,300 in Cycletrader.com.

The Niken GT is a very good bike. However, at $17,300 I would expect hard side cases (think Ducati Multistrada 950s or BMW F900 XR Touring) and the international appeal of something with Italian or German lineage. To me, the Niken GT is a very strong sport touring proposition at the $13k USD level, above that I know I would have gotten a new 950s, F900XR touring, or a 2-3 year old BMW S1000XR or Multistrada 1260 touring.

I've been interested in watching or reading about a comparison of the Niken and any bike with cornering ABS, so I searched YouTube for "Niken VS" and came up with this video - in Italian (which I do not understand - but I think I do understand video of motorcycles flying through corners):

My impression of the video is  that there is little to choose in handling corners between the Niken and KTM 790 Duke (the Scalpel ) with C-ABS).  If anyone able to understand Italian can provide a confirmation or correction to my impression, I would be grateful.

A second video, by Cycle World misses my mark (Niken vs C-ABS equipped bike) by comparing the Niken to the Tracer (no C-ABS)  and not only on handling differences, but on all aspects of the two models.

They do confirm isthatahemi's conclusion that the Niken is pretty much "magical' so far as ride quality and handling are concerned...although those qualities were not enough to persuade them that the Niken was worth the added cost over the Tracer.  Good news for Tracer owners.

One of the things that Niken owners should check is rebound and compression damping settings on both front and rear shocks. I just found out my left front was off 2 clicks from my right side. I reset to zero with a flat head screwdriver and made sure they were set equally to standard settings.

I can’t really confirm, but in my experience, there are more reliable systems out there than the Zumo one.  I had issue after issue with my Zumo TPMS sensors on one of my previous bike.   Finally gave up on it.  Several of the people I ride with have bought inexpensive systems off Amazon and had near perfect results.

    Any recommendations?

    Hello,

Till now I had a KTM 1050, a Super Teneré and a KTM 1290 SAS.

    All superb bikes.
The ST was very confortable not only to me but also to my wife.
The KTM 1290SA-S is a great bike, but not so much confortable to my wife.

But the main concern is all them are tall bikes and I have only have 170cm high (5,7 ft) , always with tip-toes one the floor when stop in traffic lights or whatever.

Only with me not problem to manage it. But with the two above the bike is not so easy to manage it during stops and slow manouevers.

And, after many miles, we had a fall during one of these manouevers. Not so big deal, but my wife had the foot stuck below the bike...

And now she is asking me to have a bike not so high and that I can handle with confidence during low manouevers and when I stop.

But I not know if Niken can help me  about this... Even having 3 wheels...

Another doubt is about the seats... The one to the driver seems OK... But the one to the pillion???

What you can say about my questions?

    Thanks!
    Duarte S.

I am 5 ft 11 inches tall with 32 in inseam and I'm only on the balls of my feet with just me on the bike in full gear. I have the same concerns of stability of I bring my lady on it and whether I can keep the top stable. I would definitely say you cannot flatfoot on this bike unless someone offers a low seat height option.

  12. The previous owner of my bike had a full Arkapovic exhaust installed when he ordered it. Nice sound - throaty but not too loud with some nice burbles and pops. I'm not sure that he had the bike tuned after they installed  the exhaust though. Still not sure why this site uploads all my photos upside down. Can we upload videos with sound to this site?

  14. Just attached battery tender cables and assembled emergency roadside kit.

My emergency roadside kit contains Aerostich mini air compressor, motorcycle jumper cables, LED roadside flare, tire patch kit. What did everyone else have in their oh s### bags?

Fortnine out of Canada  did a great forward looking review of the Niken that looks at the strategic reasons as to why Yamaha is putting so much effort into the three wheel tech.

Additionally Yamaha bought the patents for  this:
