Oily residue on exhaust shroud?

I'm curious to hear about others' experience with oily residue on the exhaust shroud.  My guess is that it's blow-by, and will go away when the rings seat.  Does anyone with a high-mileage bike still see it happen?

Just regular exhaust gases mixing with moisture. There's simply a nearby surface for it to collect. Non-issue.

I get occasional dark spots on my "exhaust shroud", the trim piece near the exhaust exit. Although it looks oily, It seems to be more like soot. I agree with clint that it is carbon (soot) mixed with water
