License Plate Bulb replacement

Recommended Posts

2016 FJ09 Stock

I am trying to replace my license plate bulb. Can someone tell me how to remove the license plate light unit's housing case? I see the instructions in the owner's manual, but I don't know how to reach the nuts/collars. Looks simple, but I just don't want to break the light unit casing.

Also, does anyone know what is the highest wattage bulb that I can safely replace it with for brighter visibility. (The current bulb is 12 v 5W) Or has anyone tried a LED that uses less wattage but is brighter than the stock bulb? Thank you for your help.

I replaced the OE bulb with LED Type 194. Philips I believe, but there is quite a selection out there. They may vary in overall length... so just pay attention to that.

Thanks, I've wondered how to access this bulb too.

Thank you all for your helpful comments. I finally figured out the recommended way of the owner's manual by looking behind the lighting unit where two collar nuts are located. Just unscrew them and the lighting unit cover can be removed, including the lens without any prying.

I also upgraded the license plate bulb to a LED bulb compatible with 194 or 2825.

Since I purchased a pair of bulbs and used only one, if anyone would like to buy the 2nd bulb from me for $5 (shipping included), PM me. (The pair cost $22)
