  1. I just purchased a 2017 FJ09 and found a Puig Touring screen. It did not come with the bracket and hardware to move the alien looking hand guards. Removed the stock screen and bolted in the Puig. The hand guard do hit the screen but I took a cautious test ride and did U-turns on the street and was able to stay on the paved part with out falling due to the guards hitting the touring screen. I did not think it would work. I'm thinking of going to bark buster hand guards and right now currently going to search if they will clear with the touring screen.
  2. I went to a dealer to test rode red VFR1200 with factory side cases. Loved it. Next to it was a new Versys 1000 2017 LT. I took 2 rides on the VFR and 2 on the Kawasaki Versys 1000. it was a hard choice but at low speeds the Versys felt so nimble and speeds seemed close. YMMV you MUST test ride what ever yourself Just sold the Versys for FJ09 and it’s so much lighter
  3. I usually do use T6 but the auto store only had 5 gallon buckets of the stuff so I went to get some Castrol 4T Racing and they were out of that. So on the advice of the sales guy I tried the Actevo. It got some advert saying it stays sticky to prevent dry starts as the oil stays up and not in the sump. I've been running T6 for many years now. I tend to change oil yearly then use the old oil on my chain saws. Actevo is a JASO MÁ rated oil which is a high quality. I never have heard of it until I used it last week. I used a generic cheap oil filter that leaked badly and swapped it out for a KN filter which I should have gone with in the first place.
  4. I saw a Puig Touring screen for sale cheap locally and it does not come with the mounting kit. I called Puig and they said they only sell windscreens not parts for it. I asked about Puig EU and got the same answer. From reading here there is a mounting kit and a hand guard relocating kit. Has anyone fabricated one on their own? Even better does anyone have the kit for sale or swap for FJ parts? I've had great luck with the big Puig screens. Despite being a huge Madstad fan the Puig was better than my Madstad on my Versys 1000
  5. Not exactly about synthetic but semi-synthetic and my transmission whine. I tried the Actevo Castrol 10-40 and the (yeah I know your supposed to keep rev's up and all that) 6th gear whine has diminished by 90%. Wonyachdering if anyone has experienced this. I'm wondering if Dino oil on my next change will be even quieter? I'm a marine engineer and we always do UOA (used oil analysis) and Rotella T6 in Diesel engines has the best viscosity longevity I have ever seen in some of those 1600 HP MTU engines. Like 400 hours and still protecting. We get it in 55 gallon drums.
  6. I'm another Versys 1000 owner who sees the "light" I calculate the 17 FJ 09 I am on now has about 100 US pounds lighter weight than the Versys. I've had my V1000 for 8 years and it's been the best bike I have every owned and the only one I have ever kept for 8 years as it did everything I needed a bike to do. I normally have to start the Versys to move it around but the FJ is so easy to move around with out starting it even. Predictions are that a lot of older riders are going to be moving down in size from full size touring rigs. ST1300,RT1200 etc to smaller lighter mid-weight bikes. When I started riding the Honda 750 was THE super bike. I had one that I wiped out and landed in a goldfish pond on my first day of ownership over 50 years ago. Now 750 is a smallish bike.
  7. I just discovered that the windscreen had an adjustment to let you raise or lower it. Funny what one can learn from there owners manual.
  8. Without a torque wrench it’s hard to guess 100 ft/ lbs
  9. It looks like a Yam factory shifter. I guess I don't have to use the clutch? Just found out I had it on my 17 FJ 09 by the old shift linkage and box the QS came in. Just purchased a E450 top case, mount and Givi 2122 tail mount for the box with a backrest. I see that factory hard cases are impossible to find. So far my only beef is the only smooth low power mode is B but I'm a really slow rider. My Versys 1000 is a lot smoother at low speeds and I keep that one in slow mode all the time. Damn this bike wants to wheelie but TCS helps a lot. Looking for a good used Factory Service Manual now.
  10. When I get old I’m going to get a Harley! I’m trying to retire but with so many jobs in my profession I keep getting job offers so took one up in Michigan for the summer. At home I have a Vulcan S and a Versys. I’ve owned lots of bikes in my 71 years riding since 50. Joined to get info on the bike and find used parts. I just adjusted the chain and weird no cotterpin on the axel bolt My second triple engine and love it. This FJ09 reminds me of a lower lighter Triumph Tiger 1200. Had to sell that to remodel the kitchen. Guess that’s why I’ve been married 45 years! Looking for hardcases, better seat and bigger windscreen Bike has a quick shifter installed and trying to figure out what it does Ride safely and AGATT saves your hide.
