well...since doing this, i haven't had any more surging so far... though, the throttle feels FAR more snatchy than it did before, particularly in 2nd gear.

i also cleaned my gear position sensor...  i wonder if that made a difference with mapping, as it hasn't been working properly for at least the last 10k miles...

    You changed the TPS?

You mentioned ECU flash, all tuners specifically address the fuel cut off issue.

    Custom Flashing Service:(Stock Exhaust)

    – Disable Injector Decel Cut   <---
    – Professional fuel map modification to suit stock exhaust
    – Removal of all gear based or speed dependent restrictions, TRE
    – Optimized timing maps for 91+ octane
    – Disable AIS valve (always closed)
    – Reduce Fan Temps 205°F
    – Speedometer Calibration
    – Default to A-mode (If requested)
    – ECU Based Quickshifter

I had it flashed by Vcyclenut. The flash was great for engine decel, speed limiter, and general smoothness. Unfortunately there is almost like a dead spot until you have an 1/8 inch of throttle in. Very abrupt like a light switch. That's why I checked the resistance on the APS/TPS. I've already talked to Dave and will probably send the ECU back for reflash. It may just be my bike.

  3. Just an update. After I adjusted my 2017 using the OBD2 tool, I set it back to the original settings as I previously posted.  I pulled all the connectors in the YCC-T system, inspected for corrosion and installed dielectric grease in the connectors. I used this video and the manual to check resistances which were good. I was specifically looking for dead spots or resistance spikes in the sensors.

After that I did a throttle body sync, replaced the air filter, and adjusted the chain. The bike runs much better now with the abruptness being barely noticeable. I believe the only way to get rid of it is to reflash the ECU with custom settings or sell the bike lol. I did ride it with TCS off and didn't notice any difference in the throttle.

  4. We don't have the amount of bike theft other countries do. That's my guess for not having an immobilizer. I don't think I've even seen one on any brand in the US except Harley. Back on topic, I wonder if a 17 ECU from an FZ, MT, or XSR would work? Same engine.

Hey all.  I did the slipper clutch upgrade on my 2015 FJ09, and did the cable update too.  Excellent upgrade- it really transformed the bike.  It shifts soooooo smooth now, even if I don't nail the rev matching, and it's much less of a pain in traffic, too.  I also recommend using the Rotella T6 oil- very smooth shifter action.  The existing tutorials all left something to be desired so I made my own.  I hope someone finds this helpful....

Whoah!, Mike Rowe owns an FJ? Lol.

Have you tried riding the bike without TCS on??? I ride with TCS off 95%+ of the time

I find it's much smoother vs TCS on due to my understanding of how the tunes are created on a dyno- TCS is turned off when they create a tune on the dyno since the front wheel does not rotate and the back wheel does which makes the TCS think something is wrong...

No. I'm going to try it . Thanks.

I find alot of this throttle problems tend to be a mix of rider and electronics combined... I had to retrain my muscles to let off the throttle in 2 steps vs the ole cable systems from carburetors...

Just back off the throttle a tiny amount to give you an indication the electronics are paying attention to you then you can let off the throttle even more...

    Just a idea/thought...

I hear you. I've had the bike for two years.  I've learned to live with this. It's very specific. Basically, after the initial slack is taken out of the throttle (I have it set to the minimum by the manual),  there is no fuel until about an eighth of an inch of throttle. Then it hits. It hits harder then I like. I have test driven three other brand new FI motorcycles and none do this. I made a graph to show Dave so he'll understand what I'm talking about. Green is what I want. Red is what it's doing.

  8. I'm updating this thread for the sake of science.

I have a 2017. I'm experiencing snatchy throttle after my ECU flash.  It's driving me nuts. I bought an ODB II patch cable for the bike so I could hook up my ODB II dongle. Since I couldn't go into the diagnostic mode on the bike, I checked the throttle position indications on my app. They matched what people had set their FJs to in this thread and I noticed that the white line on the APS was straight across. So in my opinion, the 2017s were set at the lower numbers at the factory and that's why the diagnostic modes were removed. (Totally uneducated guess). I decided to adjust it anyway. The two throttle positions were 14% and 13% as shown in the pic. I put the closed throttle at 10%. No good. Snatchiness went away but the idle shot up to 2500 rpm and the exhaust started to glow red. Oops. Adjusted to 12%. Idle was better but still a little high. Set both at 13%. Back to the original setting. Runs great. Snatchiness is still there but I think it may be the flash. Got it done by Vcyclenut. So there you have it. 2017s do not seem to have any adjustment left to mess with. Below are the pics of my setup.

I got hit in a parking lot by a woman that didn't see me. The first thing I did laying on the ground was move my arms and legs to make sure I wasn't paralyzed. Then they loaded my in the ambulance and took me to the trauma center. I now wear high viz everything. I never worried for a second afterwards about riding anywhere except in parking lots. I get nervous now whether in a car, truck, bike or walking.

A funny thing happened at work yesterday. A friend there rides a Harley bagger saw I have a picture of my MT 10 on my desktop and told me " that thing is a death machine" I didn't respond because I didn't want to have an argument in the middle of an office. I've offered to let him ride it but he's scared shitless of getting on it. I wanted to say....so my bike that has incredible handling, turns on a dime, has suspension that eats up rough road, traction control, ABS is the death machine? And on top of that I wear great helmets, jackets gloves in high viz colors versus you in your pirate outfit and a plastic yarmulke? Didn't Harley guys originate the "I had to lay it down" expression? I guess that's what you do when you ride an 800 pound beast that doesn't stop or turn. Sorry, it's hard for me to stop myself when I get going about Harley people and their antiquated bikes and ideas and arrogance.

I had my FJ a week and a girl almost t-boned me in a gas station parking lot at night. I have Hiviz gear with highly reflective stuff all over it. Ended up putting Custom Dynamics red and amber Magic Spot LEDS on the sides of the bike. Super bright at night. No problems since.

Agreed, the APS adjustment is definitely the “hidden gem” mod for the ‘15-‘16 FJ’s (not sure about ‘17) AND ITS 100%FREE!

My closed settings were 17 from the factory, I set mine to 13 and then again down to 12. Love it👍🏻

I'm going to try this on my 17. I won't have any numbers to go by so It's going to be a trial and error thing. I'm going to mark the current position so I can go back to it if I have to. I'll post results. Actually, I should get an ODB II cable since I have a reader. That would probably be the smart thing before I try it.
