Cheap Aux light installation with dimmer

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I'm fufu from france (sorry if I make grammar & spelling mistakes :-P)
I'm creating this thread just to show you how I mount my aux light on my FJ-09. It may interrest some people

I mount them with a dimmer and a 2 mode switch.

1° The two light are mount under the main head light. There are fixed using the 2 original screws of the oem light, with one bracket (the first picture is not mine)

2° then I fixed the 3 mode switch (off, low, high)

There is two way to use the installation with the switch
Low power mode: It's possible to adapt the power by using a remote control, and you can even have some special mode (strobe, dimmer, etc...)

And a full power mode

I also prepare the installation of an automatic mode: if the switch is on low power mode and you switch on the main oem light, then the aux light pass to full power mode. I could not finish the installation because I need to find a +12v wire linked with the main beam and I still don't know where I can find one. If someone find a solution, please send me a private message.

3° I also installed an indicator LED: green, low power mode, red, full power mode

I'm quite happy with the result
Now this is how I did it

The gear (You may find alternative I guess):

2 Aux light you can easily find on ebay, with strong power

Then some additionnal component (connector, etc...)

The mounting scheme
img_2016.jpg

The main power is coming from a fuzeblock FZ1 ( http://www.fuzeblocks.com/ ) that I mounted before. It's in charge to protect the system with a fuze and turn on or turn off all the system when you start the bike. You may find another way to plug the whole system to the battery.

I guess the scheme is easy to understand by itself. Just some translation: "voyant" is "Indicator LED", "Spot" is the Aux Leds, "Pleinphare" is "main oem light"
Once everything is ready, you put everything in the boxe and you pass all the wiring by a hole. Then you need to use some connectors

Finally you get something like that.

How to mount it on the bike
Every thing goes behind the windshield. If i had to redo it, i will try to make something smaller. Everything fits, but it becomes a bit more difficult to move the windshield afterwards.

You need to install a main wire from the battery to the front of the bike. I pass the wiring behind the fairing on the right side of the bike. I did not take pictures.
For the switch, very easy. Just fix it on the handlebar and follow the oem wiring
For the indicator light, I mount it inside a heat shrinkable tube and fix it along an oem cable coming the right side of the handlebar. I did not find a better place

I hope this installation could help somebody else. If you have any comments, fell free.

Nice write up and I know we have talked before on PM trying to find a source for the high beam. I eventually gave up on it after trying a bunch of wires that go to the high beam since the power in the wires went from On when the high beams were off to Off when the high beams where turned on. So since that was the opposite of what I needed I just stopped until I had time to figure something else out. So I'll be watching your thread to see if anything is figured out.

awesome write up. I already ordered a cheapo set and I just figured I'd go with a simple on/off switch wired to a switched power source but had I seen this first... :)

I guess it would be possible to use a 3 road 12 v relay module, and use one relay only to bypass the dimmer when Highbeam power goes to off (for each relay, you have one circuit when the trigger is off and a second circuit when the trigger goes on)

But all the installation will become bigger.
