ericm
I'll be wanting to run an electric vest this winter. The vest draws 3.75 amps, and the accessory socket is fused for 2a. Can I just put a 5a fuse in there or do I need to wire something up? Thanks.
Premium Member wessie Posted November 13, 2015 Premium Member Share Posted November 13, 2015 After a chilly ride today and the possibility of a more centralised role meaning commuting by bike, I was thinking of a heated vest. I think I would prefer to use a dedicate lead wired to the battery - most vests come with this and maybe a controller in the line. This way you won't have a lead coming across the tank, just a tail coming from under the seat that you plug into when you get on the bike. Ideally a quick release job that does not break when you forget to disconnect it at the fuel station. That way the accessory socket is left for the low current applications it was designed for like satnav & phone. This signature is left blank as the poster writes enough pretentious bollocks as it is. ericm
After having BMWs that come with an accessory socket placed to plug in the vest and with the capacity to handle it, I don't want to go back to fishing for a lead sicking from under the seat, holding it with one hand while I plug in with the other. Plugging into a socket that is fixed to the bike is much easier. Wiring everything directly to the battery seems so 1995.
Premium Member wessie Posted November 14, 2015 Premium Member Share Posted November 14, 2015 Just looked and the Keis vest I have been looking at draws just 1.5A as it is rated 18W - seems the vest you have or are looking at is either less efficient or produces twice as much heat. Whichever, the Keis X10 will run off the accessory socket. http://www.sportsbikeshop.co.uk/motorcycle_parts/content_prod/102586 There's an EXO2 vest that draws 0.8A as it only has 2 heat pads, over your kidneys. http://www.exo2.co.uk/stormwalker-2-heated-gilet-p-37.html A local retailer has both in stock so I will be considering these.
