Great info on the Scottoiler.  I've been thinking of getting one but I figure the time I spend hand oiling would just about equalize what I'd spend dicking with the oiler.  I went partway with Scott and have been using the blue Scott oil on my new OEM chain.  I hand oil drops on each link about every 75 to 100 miles.  I get a fair amount of fling and have to keep the rag going all the time.  With this much personal attention to each link I'm curious to see how long this new OEM (D.I.D.) chain lasts.

Im with you on that ,,only takes a couple minutes to oil chain and I actually enjoy doing it ,,for longer trips I just bring a small bottle ,,

My o-rings were pretty much toasted when I bought the bike (used); the stock chains seem to fall apart quickly.  RK or D.I.D. are great.  Do yourself a favour and grab a rivet tool for the connecting link.  They're not expensive, and they're FAR safer than the clip connecting links.

O-rings are good enough for our bikes.  X-rings are nice, but probably a bit overkill for the majority of our riding conditions.  Seems to me the wiper action of the X would be better suited for off-road, but I suppose that's subjective.  In theory, the X ring has less contact surface with the chain plate(s), so there would be a bit less friction.

    ...and sprockets.

Dam good advice on rivet link ,,yeah not a fan of the clip

    Thanks

Changing the chain means a change to the sprockets as well. They wear together so putting a new chain on old sprockets will hasten the wear of all 3 components as the surfaces are mismatched.

When time comes to change my chain, I will opt for good quality D.I.D. chain per the bike's spec, and probably go with stock Yamaha sprockets.

I have a Shinko Raven on the rear. It' seems okay but I have not been in rain with it. It needs replacing at 4000mi and I haven't doged it. The tread pattern doesn't look like it would disperse water like the Michelin Road 5 or Pirelli Angel ST IMHO.

Yeah I looked at that Raven but noticed they got a bad rap,,Only 4 k sounds harsh to me ,,so far so good with Verge .

I have to say the Battlax that game with my old fz 07 lasted a long friggin time ,I replaced that at over 10 k and could have gone longer ,,and I was anything but gentle on that bike

A couple different things ,,Bel Ray,Dumonde Tech ,,wd 40.  { KIDDING}  ,,,🤪 I made sure whatever it was was O ring recommended ,,I read somewhere Yamaha had a bad batch of chains ,,my FZ 07 had no problems after 16 K

  7. Need new chain after 8500 mies ,,what's up with that ,the O rings are falling apart . and its been well maintained

I know nothing about chains other than its stamped 525 on link

last dumb question ,,x ring or O ring ,,amount of links,,I count 59 so assuming my chain is 118 links ?

Does anyone know if I go up a tooth in the rear will the 118 still work ?

any recommendation on chain would be helpful,,I dont think I need anything fancy like gold ,,its a chain right

    Much appreciated thanks

For my last 2 replacements I went 520 DID ZVMX GOLD with Sprocket Center Superlite 16 / 47 and LIKE EM!!

Maybe I could have reused the 1st set's sprockets and will give both 520 sets a critical eye before buying the next chain.

I like where going 2 up on the rear puts the RPMs at every speed including at takeoffs and even at 75 mph.  Mileage hasn't suffered much and haven't noticed and added noise without the front damper.

My 15 CP3 likes the higher revs along with the XSR slip/assist clutch, especially in the twisties.

Waiting for rush hour to die down then going to put more wear on all components...

Question ?,,did going up that ratio make it anymore say jerky in 1st ?,,can you just change the rear ?or is that counter productive ?,, My 2020 has weak pull away speed at higher MPH  ,,need to dump it down a couple gears for any good pull

I found this wind spoiler on eBay for about $30 and thought I would give it a try.  I also have the MRA X-creen 'sport' size spoiler which is 10"x4" and $120.

Universal Motorcycle Risen Adjustable Windscreen Windshield Spoiler Air...

I didn't feel that the MRA spoiler had much of an effect and eventually stopped using it.  This one measures almost an inch taller as well as an inch wider than the MRA.  This one is built very well (it must be assembled and has decent instructions included) and is very sturdy at speed, no perceived movement.  The screen is noticeably thicker and the support arms are beefier than the MRA.  I don't know if it is a pro or con but when the screen locks are undone, they are much looser to adjust the screen position while the MRA is much tighter and requires more effort to adjust, however once it is adjusted and you set the locks then it is very sturdy and secure.  And finally, this one simply works - at least for me - I am 6'-1" and I adjusted it only 1" up from its lowest position and tilted the top of the spoiler more vertical and purposely rode around at 70mph with no ear plugs.   I could still hear wind noise obviously, but it wasnt thunderous or annoying, and with ear plugs like I normally wear, I'm sure it will be very comfortable riding all day long.

At 4x the cost of this screen, I cant recommend the MRA sport size spoiler.

first must say good product review ,,but for someone looking for an add on screen you can't tell us the name of the product ,,its like what's the point ,,,,Frustrating !!

There is a little computer in there. It is trivial for the program to have a small calibration table adjust for the odd fuel container shape.

I consider this about the most annoying thing about the motorcycle (after fixing the foot peg crowding problem), because it asserts itself with every ride. It's also impossible to upgrade.

Yes, one can work around it. Not bad for a "most annoying thing".

its a nuts gauge ,,you ride for a couple hours with a full tank then bam,,your down to half ,,and so on,,, ect

Me too,,,,the tab that sits against the c c barely touches ,,and I mean barely,,but hasn't been a problem,, had to adjust cable at clutch housing,,,also I did notice the brake lever had more travel ,,I may try and insert a bb in the socket ,,I had to do that on FZ07 but it was worse ,,they were Chinese ,,,

Hi, just been cleaning my bike ,UK 2018 900 GT, it has done 13,000 miles, and have just found tiny little bits of rubber coming out of about 7 chain links, also found one O ring stuck in chain lube on the Swinging arm....... I only clean the chain with WD40, and use a Top Class chain lube. This is my 42nd bike and never seen this before. Has anyone else had this problem.

    Cheers Edgar Jessop.

YIKES,,,,Not sure I would be using WD40,    the manual calls for kerosine ,,and never use motor oil,,like wd 40 it has additives that will mess up orings

The stock tires are okay  but that's about all I can say for them.  They don't last a terribly long time and don't feel very good, at least to me, but they aren't bad tires.  If you're not particularly choosy about tires, and are a regular fair weather rider, they'll be fine.

I'm much happier with my Road 5's, but I'll say that there's a definite personal preference here that I've found between Dunlops overall and Michelins(not just these specific tires, but brands overall), they have a different feel, and I don't really like how Dunlops feel.

However, the stock tires on this bike are not "normal" - they're stock tires - and like most stock tires they're clearly made to a budget.  Even personal feelings about Dunlops aside, they're not great.  I found it was very easy to break grip in lower temps and wet pavement, so when I pulled mine in favour of my winters shortly after buying the bike, I just sold them on Kijiji.

Otherwise, my much-too-late negative thoughts about the stock bike:

    • The windshield is hot garbage.  It's not good.  Almost everyone is going to want an aftermarket windshield, be it smaller or larger.
    • The rear pegs are positioned in such a way as to be a nuisance to people of around US Size 10 shoes.  For me (12/13) they're actually really nice, as I ride with the balls of my feet on the pegs and my heels on the pillion pegs, which supports my feet very comfortably.  However, I imagine a great many people will want to swap those brackets for the FJ09 hard case brackets (if they have a GT) to remove the passenger pegs entirely should they not need them.
    • The stock seat, unmodified, tends to make you lean forward more than the natural riding position on the bike supports.  We've found easy solutions for this, with a thread in the tech tips section - just propping up the rear of the tank with a couple washers, which lifts the front of the seat and fixes things.  Alternatively, if you WANT to be leaned forward all the time, then this could be viewed as a benefit.  That said, the seat itself is pretty middle-of-the-road: it's not like an MT07 seat (torture device) by any means, but neither is it great.
    • Stock, the bike's a bit... Unhappy, riding really slowly.  Like 20-30kph.  It basically always wants to be accelerating or be idle, and it requires feathering the clutch to ride slowly consistently and smoothly.  Flashing the ECU, or installing a Booster Plug, fixes this up nicely, but stock the bike is mapped quite lean at low RPM by default.  This is not nearly as bad on the 2018+ bikes with slipper clutches and updated fuel maps compared to the older FJ's, but it's still definitely a thing.

Its funny ,,different butts different outcomes,,I didn't mind fz07 seat at all, ,,not fan of tracer seat at all,,I like the washer tip cause I'm always feeling pitched forward ,,Thanks ,,

and if you want to save a few bucks cutting about 3 inches off stock windshield was great for me ,,no buffeting ,and still some protection ,,

How do I love this bike? Let me count the ways....firstly that triple engine-responsive,characterful,burbly, fabulous. Yes it is a little vibey at certain revs but all in all a job well done Yamaha! Ths stock exhaust is music to my ears-no Akropovic for me! The tranny which was a little notchy and difficult to slot into neutral when brand new now is like a hot knife thru butter after some breakin kms and  fresh synthetic 10w40 moto oil.  I've tightened the chain but have forgone throttle synch for now. SHAD eO4 tank bag for wallet and cellphone is great  Grip puppies have helped alot for my long fingers. The windscreen is fine for my one hour blasts around the lake roads, however the seat slope has be constantly pushing my rear end back.I may try one of the mods to raise the front a bit as it is annoying. For my needs brakes and tires have been perfectly adequate.  All in all I'm glad I pulled the trigger in March as there is very limited supply up here in the Toronto area. Yes, the turn signals are hideous and may be on list for upgrade. This trusty steed ticked alot of boxes for me and the rear pillion has garnered no complaints from the occasional passenger. Cheers fellow owners!

SAY WHAT,,,my seat slopes forward ,,HUH !!!

This is why I only do Ivan's ECU flashes.  He is upfront and his ECU flashes are very very good.  He uses his own tuning software and he has access to more stuff inside the ECU.

That being said my 2020 GT is very smooth and not twitchy at all fueling wise so unless I decide on an exhaust, it will just stay stock.👍

Was he able to change the fan temp setting ?

  16. 9 hours ago, peteinpa said:

Wow.  I have nothing but positive results from 2WDW.  I first got a 2015 FZ07. That thing was completely tranformed with its flash. Fan comes on at 200F, off at 190.

I then traded it and an ST1300 for my 15 FJ09 and got it flashed once it snowed here. Not quite as completely  transformed but close. I still had to do the APS adjustment. Now it's great. Fan temps changed to same as FZ07.

Even at 200 I'm trying to think if fan comes on ever. it did during TB sync. On my ST1300 fan came on in 30 seconds after stopping. It couldn't be flashed.

Are they having problems changing fan temps on 20 and newer, IDK.

its so interesting how we get different results,,he did my fz07 and by no means did it transform the bike ,,it helped but did not transform it.

as of now I cant answer your last question ,,I was hoping to hear from some members with newer bikes but so far nota  one

That sounds crazy. I asked ahead of time for my 2016, and they confirmed they could do it, and it kicks on at 190F, I believe. Might be 195F.

Have you talked to Nels? He’s always personally responded to my emails at least; might be worth a shot.

I am about to drop him a line ,,I will  lyk what he says,,,as of now I haven't heard from anyone with a newer bike
