Not OEM, I have used K&N reusable filters in all of my vehicles for many years, not for any performance but for convenience.  I’m a stickler for a clean air filter so I wash them several times a year.

Yeah thats the way to go,,dealer wanted $40 bucks but was out so I just cleaned up the stock one ,didn't look to bad from the top side but down in the crevasse it was loaded with crap,,for giggles I checked the owners manual ,,replace at 24 K ,,thats insane

There shouldnt be anything else to do in there.  I removed the front foam area but havent heard anything about the snorkel.

Adjusting the APS makes a noticeable difference in throttle smoothness, factory setting should be 17, I adjusted mine down to 12.

I feel like I just fell off the turnip truck,,So I'm R&R  my air filter ,,what is the point of removing the foam and is it all the foam or just the smaller black neck piece on the front of the tank ?

Also I love the thought of smoother throttle ,but have no clue what APS is ,,does this adjustment require any special tools ?

    Thanks

I just bought a 2019 Tracer 900GT with 12,000 km (7500 miles). The bike is in great shape and was well cared for. But, I am noticing a ‘roughness’ to it. Not a noise, or necessarily a vibration, although I can feel it in the bars and pegs. It’s most noticeable when cruising along at about 3500 rpm in 6th, but is present throughout most of the range. If I pull in the clutch, the feeling instantly goes away. I have a friend with a 2020 Tracer and there is a noticeable difference in feel between the 2 bikes. He has ridden mine and doesn’t feel that it pulls as hard. I’ve ruled out chain, wheel bearings, brakes. Wondering if a re-synch of the throttle bodies would help. Anyone else notice this?

If it makes you feel any better my 2020 ,12K miles does it to, right around 4800 rpm and up  ,mostly on acceleration ,,but it pretty much goes away when I back off and just cruise ,,mines foot pegs and seat , sounds like there's some good advise reading some of the post . I think I will do the clutch basket this spring .Best

I agree with @texscottyd  I just had my tank removed yesterday to clean my air filter.

On the front, you can pull the sides out a few millimeters to clear the mount points, on the rear you have to make sure that the plumbing and electrical on the rear of the tank are tucked in correctly out of the way and it will drop into place.  If you have to use ANY pressure to get it to fit, then something isn't correct

You cleaned the air filter ? is it OEM ?,,I just did mine ,,some soap and water and air but when I thought it was all good until  I  peered between the folds ,,all kind of nasty stuff lurking in there,,I was concerned about using compressed air but that material is pretty stout . looks good but I hate myself for being cheap ,,I may just hit the dealer for a new one

I’m late to reply here, and the other guys chimed in already with good advice -  Here’s my $0.02…

Nothing really wrong but bear in mind a torque wrench is really only accurate in the middle 80% or so of it’s range. So if the scale of your 3/8 is 5-100 ft Lbs for example, it’s not going to be very accurate at 5-10 or 90-100 foot lbs (rough numbers). If you tighten the fastener slowly you can get by, but it’s best to use a wrench where the torque value you are trying to achieve falls more in the middle of its range.

my digital SnapOn torque wrenches are a bit more forgiving because they are more accurate than the more common mechanical style ones. However I still use a 1/2” drive wrench for axle torque (67-110ft) or a 1/4” drive wrench for a smaller fastener that requires 6, 7, 8 and 10 ft lb (for example)

(this is probably a bad analogy but it would be like using a framing hammer to install shingles on a roof?)

on a side note, that Abba lift stand in your pictures is wicked!

I went ahead and cut the snorkel. I figure I can always glue the cut piece back on again if there’s a problem.

I put some tape on to give me a guide line and then used a cut-off disc in a Dremmel. Then just tidied up the edges with emery cloth. I’m hoping to get a ride in tomorrow to report back.

I adjusted the APS down to 14 in DIAG 14 and 12 in DIAG 15 (after a fruitless five minutes trying to get into diagnostic mode, before I realised I had the ECU out 🤪).

So, new K&N filter, adjusted APS, removed foam from under tank and shortened the snorkel. Good fun fiddling, with hopefully some upside.

I just opened mine up to check air filter ,,found a small puddle of  motor oil in there with a fw metal shavings ,,the oil looked brand new ,bike has 12K miles ,,weird ,,so was thinking of also cutting snorkel ,,did it help ,or can you even tell,,I did it on Mt 07 and made it pretty loud on air induction

    Thanks

Fuel Injection Light and Malfunction Indicator Light or Lamp, which is like a check engine light.

The FI light is the equivalent of a CEL in your car. The ecu has detected an abnormality with one of the sensors, check the code and see what's up.

The check engine light, often referred to as the Malfunction Indicator Lamp or MIL, allows the PCM to alert the driver that an emissions related problem has occurred or is currently occurring. The check engine light is located on the dashboard panel and is colored red or yellow.

Thats so annoying but good to know thanks  ,,I vaguely remember the C C light flashing sometime after engine light came on ,same with menu acces  ,,thanks Yamaha

Yup. Menu locks when a code is there. I also got a Bluetooth OBD2 device just to reset my code when my menu locked.

Pretty cool some of the info you can read from your phone while it's on. I can even pull up 0-60 and quarter mile times on mine. Fun to play around with.

Really ,,,thats good to know ,,im planning a trip would sure be nice to have C C and accurate time on clock ,,might have to bite the bulllet and go to dealer ,,something I dread

If the MIL (FI light) is illuminated you lose access to certain functions until the light is cleared. This has happened to more than one member here.

sometimes running the bike on the center stand triggers a MIL, and sometimes it doesn’t.  The REASON it occurs is that that the ECM doesn’t like seeing a reference value from one wheel’s speed sensor and not from the other, and tries to engage the traction control - which generates the code.

It’s not smart enough to know you have the bike on the center stand.

MIL,,FI light ?? you got me there ,,what's that

First thing I would do is check the fuses under the seat.  I know that one of the 7.5 amp fuses under the seat will cause the menu to be locked out if it blows, along with other symptoms such as the QS being shut off.  Worth a look.  Otherwise I would let the dealer hook up to the diagnostic port under the passenger seat and see what they find.

I'll take a look ,I did look at the other fuses behind turn signal ,,all good there

    thanks

  11. All happened over a few days ,,first I could not and still cant access menu on control panel,,I can operate everything else but it won't open to the main menu  ever since I reverted back to stock settings a few days ago because it was being a pain so I thought maybe resetting might help .  Then after replacing chain and sprocket ,{stock } and making the mistake [which I've done before with no problem} I ran bike on center stand in gear and the engine light is now on so I tried disconnecting the battery but then today after reconnecting the tcs light was on and cruise control light was flashing ,, the tcs  light went off after restarting bike but didn't help with c c light .  I did a search  here for all issues , seems to all happen at once . Anyone else experience any of this nonsense ? I did see a post about a scanner that would reset engine light I wonder if it would help with the other issues . Oh its a 2020Tracer gt

thanks ,,,any insight would be appreciated if I can avoid a dealer ,,,I have trust issues

Looked through some old posts on chain adjustment but couldn't find an answer to my particular question, hence why I'm starting a new post on this common subject.

The manual states that to adjust the chain tension the axel and adjuster nuts should be loosened whilst the bike is on the side stand. Then raise the bike onto the centre stand, adjust and align aiming for a slack between 35mm to 45mm, then place the bike down onto the side stand and tighten the axel and adjusters. Why would you need to loosen and tighten on the side stand and adjust on the centre stand? I've always loosened, adjusted and finally tightened all on the centre stand, then off onto the side stand for a final check. Your thoughts and practices will be appreciated please.

    Thanks, Michael......

I think its just a safety thing ,,afraid you may tip bike over ,,but what boob would do all that ,,way too much work

I bought my Tracer 9 GT in July of 2021.  After several issues which had the bike laid up for over 6 months they finally have it right, well almost.  I find their latest ECU reflash to suck, you know, the one from the recall.  The bike runs terrible when cold and there's a flat spot in the powerband that's very noticeable when accelerating hard from second gear at low revs.  I would tell you at what RPM's but I can't begin to see that sorry ass TFT that Yamaha decided to give the bike. The bike also has a strange trait when engine braking.  It will slow down as expected but then the compression just seems to release itself causing the bike to lurch forward just a bit.    My latest complaint is that Yamaha has made hardly any accessories available for the bike.  I want the heated comfort seat but it isn't available in the states.  While I find the Tracer 9 GT to be a great bike I must say that I enjoyed my 2015 FJ09 a lot more.  I was just more fun.  I'm not sure how long I'll keep the Tracer, this one has just left me with a bad taste, especially the way Yamaha has decided to run their enterprise.

I'm waiting til the new Honda NT1100 becomes available.  Hopefully I'll find that more to my liking.  Sorry for the negativity but my latest attempt to get the seat mentioned earlier has me pissed.

If anyone else is experiencing the flatspot in the powerband or the lurching when engine braking please let me know.

Funny how you trash it then call it a great bike ,,its a love hate relationship for sure ,,I feel the same about my 2020 GT . If it makes you feel any better I have same excel issues even after wasting $350 on a flash ,,5 K rpm in 2and and hammer it and there's a slight bog or flat spot  ,,very annoying ,,its like that throughout all gears ,,I just got into the habit of pulling in clutch for a split sec and the bike responds nicely . Some of the crap Yamaha does is mind boggling ,,I don't get that newTFT snorkel , whenever I use hand warmers I feel that cheep plastic push wheel is going to break,,one step forward two steps back ,,anyway I hope things  work out for you

For my last 2 replacements I went 520 DID ZVMX GOLD with Sprocket Center Superlite 16 / 47 and LIKE EM!!

Maybe I could have reused the 1st set's sprockets and will give both 520 sets a critical eye before buying the next chain.

I like where going 2 up on the rear puts the RPMs at every speed including at takeoffs and even at 75 mph.  Mileage hasn't suffered much and haven't noticed and added noise without the front damper.

My 15 CP3 likes the higher revs along with the XSR slip/assist clutch, especially in the twisties.

Waiting for rush hour to die down then going to put more wear on all components...

Ok im not the smartest guy and this may be a dumb question but would simply  downshifting a gear with stock sprocket  be the same as a larger sprocket ?

And is it safe to assume lower gear 1st 2and the bike will be noticeably snappier at lower rpms, I would love to be able to lift the front off the ground in 3rd gear but no matter how hard I try its almost impossible ,,would a taller rear sprocket help?

I've had my 2018 900 GT since the end of June, and have done about 400-500 miles (2065 miles when i got it, second owner). All to and from work along English country roads (lots of nice twisty bits!).

Really enjoying the bike so far!

Got the bike pretty standard with dealer extras:

    • Akrapovic full system
    • Right side engine cover
    • Engine lower crash protection (removed to fit Givi bars)
    • LED indicators/running lights
    • Radiator guard

Added over the last couple weeks:

    • R&G front spindle sliders
    • R&G rear spindle sliders & adjusters
    • R&G Passenger footrest blanking plates
    • R&G bar ends
    • R&G tank grips
    • R&G side stand foot
    • Highsider mirrors
    • Puig beak
    • Givi crash bars
    • Givi passenger seat luggage mount
    • Michelin Road 5 tyres
    • Pyramid fender extenders front and rear
    • Datatool alarm upgrade

    To-do:

    • Make Givi sump guard work with non-standard exhaust (front right bracket need bending)
    • Fit headlight protectors
    • Fit screen (Puig shorty)
    • Replace disc and sprocket nuts/bolts with stainless and titanium
    • Fit rear sliders
    • Fit MT09 over-wheel guard
    • Fit EvoTech levers
    • Fit small tail tidy to blank off stock, and mount rear indicators and reflector
    • Fit R&G tail tidy to over-wheel mount
    • Replace a whole lot of fixing with stainless

    Good things:

    • Suspension - Great out-of-the-box - But will be getting it professionally set up for me and my usage.
    • Throttle response - Never been a fan of fly-by-wire, but was pleasantly surprised
    • Build quality
    • Do i even need to mention the engine?
    • Leg room - Foot position felt very odd initially, but happy with it now.
    • Fuel economy - I'm still struggling to believe it.

    Bad things:

    • Fuel gauge - Full, full, full, half...no quarter, no! fill me now!
    • Stock screen
    • Seat angle - Just need to do the slope mod
    • Mode button - I would much rather have the pass light there.
    • Standard tyres - The D222s are utter trash
    • Low-quality chain/sprocket/ring - Already weathered badly.
    • Stock mirrors - Cheap crap

howdy,,,is there such a thing as slope mod?, always sliding forward on 2020 gt I cut the bumpers a bit but didn't help enough

I am not sure why they used 2 drain bolt gaskets.  I thought the same thing when I posted this, did not really pay attention at the time.  I will ask when I take it in for the recall.

As for the 4 quarts of oil instead of 3.4, as you probably know this is normal shop practice to round up.

as far as washer goes neither my FZ07 or Tracer had one when I bought the bikes. ,,so never used one

But did the new Tracer engine get bigger ,,my 2020 holds under 3 quarts ,,did you check your manual ?

WOW did not think this was still a problem, my chain o'rings dropped to pieces . On my 2019 900GT .

I got in touch with Yamaha and they said yes we have had a bad batch from D.I.D. chains.

We are replacing them F.O.C. Some bikes had only done 4000 miles and the chain was crap.

Mine had done 14000 miles and they sad sorry to many miles.

Cannot believe there is still bad chains 3 years later.

    Cheers Edgar Jessop

Yeah its annoying for sure ,,,I would be fine with 14 K ,,mines around 9K miles

A recall would have been cool but they figure by the time they blow up the bike will be out of warrenty
