He was uninsured and all was apparently written off by hospitals/doctors.

I guess my question is......will a motorcycle crash be likely to be caused by a distracted cager and my medical bills be covered by their insurance?

I'm glad he made it. I have coworkers who will be making payments on medical debt for the rest of their lives because the Dr discounted but did not write off the cost.

The 2nd quoted paragraph makes a lot of assumptions - 1. That the LEO sees the accident the same way you do and holds the other driver responsible, 2. They have sufficient insurance to cover major medical costs, 3. The insurance pays off in a reasonable time and doesn't tie everything up for years leaving you on the hook in the meantime.

It's up to you. It's not a risk I would take. Like has been said above, a high deductible policy will be less expensive now but cover the really bad crash.

  2. Something like 50% of bankruptcies are due to medical bills. An uncomplicated ER bill can run $5k. You can not self insure for a bad wreck - it's too expensive. I'd be looking at some level of care thru the ACA or COBRA or your spouse if you have one. You don't have to sign up for COBRA right away but I don't know the deadline.

Also, do you mean you haven't used insurance for a hospital visit or ever? I'd recommend regular checkups for your own safety.

  3. Helmet still good 3 years later. The new AGV modular might be a little lighter but the AGV is louder.

A Sena 50S fits perfectly on the side of the helmet. I have discovered that I don't use the flip up much. Light sensitive visor is mostly awesome and convenient except for heading straight into the sun (which caused problems with my old Scorpion's shield, too).

With daylight savings time and a new commute I can report that sunglasses for easily in the helmet. The photo sensitive visor is not enough when you're driving east 1st thing in the morning.

  4. I swapped my rear sprocket out this afternoon.  I had one frozen nut and ended up unscrewing the whole post + nut with a socket wrench with just a little resistance. One other nut was a little sticky. The rest were easy to unscrew by hand once I got them started with a socket.

I was able to torque all of the nuts and the nut + post to the 58 ft lb torque in the manual.

  5. New EK MVX2 chain with screw on master link, Superlite rear sprocket, OE front sprocket (all stock gearing) and Gilles adjusters. I've got a pair of tires that I was hoping would arrive but at least I can commute a couple of days this week until the tires show up.

16000 miles out of my previous EK chain. I got 20k miles out of the OE but the low mileage may be my fault. In the past I've had a habit of over-lubing my chain. I tried to go much leaner with lube this time. No fling but I had at least two really stiff links.

The T7 bar ends have the same threads the Tracer does, and screw directly into the handlebars.  I'd *assume* this is the same style the FZ09 bar ends have - they're just massive male threads, no insert or anything.  I'm assuming 16mx1.5; but don't have a way to verify that.

I run FZ09 bar ends on my FJ in the summer. The adaptor and bar end weight hardware is the same in both bikes, at least 2015.

  7. The weather hit the Smokies but later than we expected. This is the early snow. We drove home in wet snow and sleet in temps from the low 20s to freezing. Just a little slush accumulation on the roads but a ride would have sucked. Took a little detour to Nashville to drop off my buddy.

It is supposed to get into the high 50s today so at least it will be easy to wash everything.

The Blue Ridge Inn in Sylva is nice enough with a bunch of restaurants and microbreweries in walking distance.

Heh, at least you can ride!

Yep. Today it got up to 60. Tomorrow we might see 65. But I decided to bring the bike in the truck because we are supposed to get an inch of snow Fri night. If it misses, I can still ride Sat morn. If it hits, I can drive home in relative comfort.

I've had many Aerostich zipper pulls fail over the last 23 years, but never the zipper itself. Zipper pulls aren't too difficult to repair yourself: Aerostich sells kits and Youtube has videos.

I had a zipper fail. Not the pull, the teeth and the ends. Local seamstress recommended tearing it out and splashing it as did Aerostich based on photos. Aerostich told me this sometimes happens on their newer zippers.

Why does nobody mention the Dunlop Roadsport 2s?  Are they embarrassingly too cheap for anyone to admit they buy them?  They seem like they are actually a good option.

I had the newer Roadsmart 2s. Dry grip is fine for commuting. They slid in the wet pretty easily. Mileage was slightly better than Roadsmart 3s (8k v 7k) if you don't count 1 flat.

I go thru about 1 set of tires annually, so the $$ saved isn't that great compared to total cost of ownership.

That seems to be a function of seat shape and design, riding position on the seat, and vibration.

You're already doing the right things. Didn't know what you already tried. Many bicycle saddles have depressions or cutouts down the middle to avoid pressure to the nerves above the perineum. Air Seat Innovations claims that their inflatable seat cushions provide relief. I would think it could work if one of the gaps between air bladders lines up midline with your crotch.

  12. You need to cut down on pressure and/or friction.

To cut down on pressure, you need more padding in the right place. Try a pair of bicycle shorts or bicycle underwear.

To cut down on friction, you can find underwear with no seams under the taint, something to reduce sweat (powder or underwear that breathes), or something that lubricated the whole area like Chamois Butter from a bicycle shop.

It's just about trade-in time, so I spent the weekend de-farkling. Undoing almost seven years of mods was quite a chore. Today I gave it a final wash. It's bittersweet, this has been a phenomenal bike and the #1 most reliable vehicle I've owned over the last 40 years. My only issue with the FJ-09 has been that the clock loses about 30 seconds per month.

    Are you getting a BMW?

  14. FJ09 with 35k miles. I've got one small wear spot on the left grip. None on the right. Rotated them to WOT and no wear. They are shiny, but I have good grip.

I did have a WR250 dual sport that had lots of grip wear in maybe 8k or 10k miles. It was slippery like you're describing. That might have been because gloves were sometimes dirty and maybe because the throttle stayed wider open longer. 🤔  At least the grip heaters were underneath so replacements were cheap.

  15. @angrygirafe - my wife and I are laughing so hard, we're in tears.  We have 2 rescue cats.  You really made my day.  Thank you.

So I meant a new medical jump bag. :) But we can respond POV.  True story - I was out on a fun moto ride many years ago near home, and I ended up following Engine 5 as they responded to a call (cancelled en route). I figured I could at least help stage lines and tools if I arrived without gear.

It just confirms I would never want to be a cop let alone a motorcycle cop or or fireman for that matter!

I want to be a motorcycle fireman. I've followed one bike tour on the moto. I've got a new jump bag, and I think I could respond to calls on the bike. How fun would that be?
