It looks like it's used across a wide range of various Yamaha models...  cost control and manufacturing efficiency. 

Neat! That looks like it threads into the bars in place of that "bushing" in the FJ/Tracer.

This is my first Yamaha, and let me tell you, I am a huge fan of Yamaha's OEM parts pricing strategy. On a Suzuki that would be three times the price, four or five times as much on a Honda or Kawasaki.

I've got something like this making it's way from Foreign parts as I type. Costing me £4.01. (but sometimes you only get what you pay for) Fingers crossed it works out but it's not a big outlay if it don't work.
