Premium Member exploring/carolina Posted February 24, 2017 Premium Member Share Posted February 24, 2017 Purchased a 1980 Honda CX500D Cafe Project bike from the previous owner for $375 with major parts bolted on, many parts in two boxes and parts missing, too. Made several modifications & test ran before dis-assembly for paint & powder coating. The frame, swing arm, drive shaft tube, and various components are semi-gloss black powder coated. Had a Mac 2 into 1 exhaust system ceramic coated flat black. The engine is painted gray with 500F primer & paint. Front fender, radiator guard, side panels, fuel tank, and seat pan were sent out to a local shop to be painted pearl white & pin-striped. Used Hotwings Glass front fender with (modified) GL1000 Darkwing seat pan, seat pad, license plate bracket, and tail light. Installed progressive fork springs. Purchased Igni Tec ignition and water pump Yamaha mechanical seal. Larry Cargill in Sacramento rebuilt the carburetor. Installed 90/120 jets & K&N pod air filters. Purchased a set of 1978 CX wheels with 18" rear. Using Bikemaster European handlebars. Rebuilt the front brake caliper after powder coating. Purchased all new stock length cables. Installed Ducati electric radiator fan using off the shelf automotive e-fan temp switch. Also made a 7V regulator to power the original temperature indicator. Used the space where the air box was located for the slide in battery tray with voltage regulator. Had a set of flat fiberglass side panels made by Hot Wing Glass! Got the rust out of the fuel tank and relined with POR 15. Installed LED turn signals with NAPA electronic flasher, All Balls tapered steering bearings, Hagon rear shocks, and LED voltage indicator light. This bike weighs in around 400lbs with over 1/2 tank of fuel. Did not cover everything, but this should give an idea of work done. [/url]
phpaul
VERY nice! One of the bikes I've always thought was a good base for a custom. I used the Hotwings seat on my '74 Suzuki GT550, it's a quality piece and looks great.
