  1. You clearly don’t understand my moto-addict cash flow situation... Cool picture, and perfectly timed for the holidays. Nicely played.
  2. @fddriver2 - I like your challenge, but haven’t been out on the bike all week. I would let go at least through the weekend and see what people come up with...
  3. @henchman - Wow... that is literally a matter of inches. Glad you came out on the good side of that situation! Suffice it to say that my deer strike was a bit nastier than yours... large animals and high speed impacts are an ugly combination. Oh, and nice bar ends...
  4. From the photos, they dont look like they would fit the FJ correctly, (round mount vs. oblong mount) they look like they are made for the FZ. Hi @jeremlab - I honestly hadn't looked around extensively at other options, given that I like the idea of staying with OEM Yamaha parts where I know the quality will be consistent. Also, I could physically see what the Super Tenere signals looked like on my local dealership's showroom floor, which made the 'yeah, I like that look' decision easier for me. To the point @betoney makes above, the standard oval rubber mount format makes the parts largely interchangeable, minus the connector style, of course. Unless the wiring for the replacement rears is exactly the same length as the FJ original signals, you'll have to cut and splice to fit anyway, so changing the connectors doesn't really have any incremental impact.
  5. Roughly a year after I initially thought about doing this, I finally got around to doing the Super Tenere LED signal upgrade on Sunday. Overall, I really like the visual improvement on the bike, and the signals & running lights work perfectly... exactly as I would expect from OEM Yamaha parts. The information that @stevesweetz provided in this thread is very helpful, and worth reading over in detail prior to digging into the project. I ordered the two left front signals as suggested, and it definitely simplified the installation process. A couple of points I would add: - Soldering the small-gauge wires is the only way to go. It's really easy to solder, and I personally don't think butt splice connectors would work in this situation. - Pay very careful attention to the original wiring routing (especially on the rear signals) to determine the correct location to splice the signal and connector wires together. That way you can avoid trying to bend the wiring at the resistor pack or the new wiring splice. Common sense, but look and measure, THEN cut and solder. - For me, the rear signals were a lot more work than the front. The wiring length needs to be exact on the rear signals, and the routing is kind of a pain. On the plus side, it looks 100% factory now that it's all back in place. - The front signals give you a lot more flexibility for wiring length and routing. I left enough wire on the new connector end that the solder splice is inside the side panels along with the signal resistor pack. The overall length end up being several inches longer than the stock FJ signals, but it worked out fine. I took my time, and did the entire thing in about four hours. I'm kind of meticulous about stuff like this, so it could certainly be done faster if you're in a rush. Nice - but not cheap - upgrade for the FJ. I'm glad I finally did it.
  6. Installed a full set of the factory Super Tenere LED turn signals. Thanks to others that have documented the process before, it was a reasonably painless process... tedious, but painless. I really like the look and function, and am glad I finally took the time to do this upgrade.
  7. Empirical evidence suggests you’re absolutely right. If you scroll back a few pages in this thread, you’ll find this comment of mine from June 9th of initial observations after removing the batwing handguards: “One thing that is absolutely noticeable is a change in high speed stability. From the day it was new, my bike had a minor low frequency oscillation - I would never have called it a speed wobble - at speeds around 110 - 115 mph (professional rider, closed course, don’t try this at home, blah, blah, blah...). The new suspension muted it significantly, but it was still definitely there... not dangerous, not troubling, but noticeable. In the back of my mind, I always thought with was likely an aero issue, presumably since I have the saddle bags on the bike 100% of the time. Well, I can happily report that removing the factory handguards completely cleared up the oscillation issue. I covered over a mile yesterday laid out on the speed governor (don’t judge me) with zero stability concerns. Who would have guessed?”
  8. I know just the place! Haven’t eaten there in years, so this is the perfect excuse to go back for a meal & a picture.
  9. @hawkeye - I’m among the group that recently ditched the stock handguards, and I much prefer the bike without them. I went with the factory FZ9 bar ends, but there are numerous other options. Check out this thread for some ideas: https://fj-09.org/thread/6794/removing-factory-hand-guards
  10. @stevesweetz - Thanks again for getting all the relevant information together in one location for the Super Tenere signal swap. I have all the bits & pieces ready to go, and am hoping to get it done over the weekend.
  11. This one seems to have gone nowhere, but I think we’ll let it run through the weekend before trying something else. So, if you’re out riding this weekend, be on the lookout for a photo oppoertunity of [b style=color:rgb(252, 37, ]...your FJ with a mural, sculpture, or some other sort of roadside artwork
  12. I meant to respond to this earlier, @koth442 - I already had all the hex bits up to the 10, so I ended up ordering a 3-piece set with 12, 14, and 17mm instead. It showed up as a 'you might also like' item from your original link, so I appreciate the lead. $14.53 delivered to my doorstep in less than 48 hours... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01EIJGQQ0
  13. The front signals are back ordered, so it will be a week or two before I get to it. I have the rear signals, wiring connectors, and new flasher relay, so I’m ready to go as soon as the rest of the parts arrive. The Pazzo levers arrived today, and I must say they are REALLY nice. Can’t wait to get them mounted & see what I think.
  14. @phpaul - Nice! It’s almost like we need a separate thread dedicated to ‘Creative Tools & Clever Improvised Solutions’ I think we’ve all done it a time or two.
  15. @betoney - I’ll have to measure the difference to get an accurate number, but it certainly feels much narrower. The FZ9 bar ends add back a bit of the total width, but overall I really like the feeling - and the look - without the hand guards. It’s just a mental trick, but the bike feels lighter and more responsive without the ‘batwings’ In place. One thing that is absolutely noticeable is a change in high speed stability. From the day it was new, my bike had a minor low frequency oscillation - I would never have called it a speed wobble - at speeds around 110 - 115 mph (professional rider, closed course, don’t try this at home, blah, blah, blah...). Well, I can happily report that removing the factory handguards completely cleared up the oscillation issue. I covered over a mile yesterday laid out on the speed governor (don’t judge me) with zero stability concerns. Who would have guessed? And ‘yes’ I’ve already purchased the ECU reflash from 2WDW, but still need to ship it off to get the work done.
  16. Sometimes even the simplest jobs require a bit of creative improvising. I put the new FZ9 bar end weights on my FJ yesterday, in what should have been less than a five minute task. But, the original inserts for the stock hand guards require a 12mm hex drive to remove, which I surprisingly don’t have in the toolbox. Not to worry... if you don’t have proper tools, just make your own, right? Apologies to professional mechanics everywhere, but this setup worked just fine:
  17. Well thank you @micah2074. I’m actually eager to see what folks come up with... there are some really cool urban murals and artwork around Houston, which gave me the idea for the target.
  18. Oil & filter change, including oil pan ‘de-finning’ and swap to the R1 drain plug. Also installed FZ9 bar end weights after removing the stock handguards. And, since I was left unsupervised with internet access and a Paypal credit balance, some fun goodies are on the way: Pazzo adjustable levers, and a full set of Super Tenere factory turn signals.
  19. Oh yeah... minor detail. How about [b style=color:rgb(252, 37, ]Your FJ with a mural, sculpture, or some other sort of roadside artwork
  20. Does this count? It's more rural than urban, but the decay part qualifies...
  21. @chuckaduck - The Pazzo levers look fantastic... want (need?) to order some myself. Those are the standard length set, correct? I believe the shorty levers don’t have the little breakaway recess out near the end.
  22. Yep, I just picked one up today at my local dealer... Oil drain plug from a 2016 Yamaha R1, Yamaha PN 90340-14019-00. Surprisingly cheap st $2.69 full dealer retail. Quick & easy.
  23. It turns out that redemption can be bought, for a $114/sq ft asking price... Who knew?
  24. Yep! That’s a new 2018 Goldwing. The ‘non-Tour’ model without the rear top box & such. I’m fascinated by this motorcycle, as it’s the first thing I’ve seen from Honda recently that really appeals to me.
