Yep -it's been gone for some time - since the site was updated last I believe.

I'm not even sure who admins this site any more.

I'll scroll through a few threads in this section and try and do a roll call.

    Are you on GTAM @Husqy?

    Rob

Same user name on GTAM, but I haven't checked it for a long time tbh (since I moved out here to KW about 4 years ago!). There some chatter on that side?

    Haha - yep - 150km.

I haven't ridden on Snake Road in a long time. Those rumble strips are ridiculous. Although I know a lot of cyclists and motorcyclists have died on that road. It's been 1/2 re-paved - so it's no longer a "go fast" road, but then again I never road it like a wannabe Rossi anyways. The best part of that is the southern part...great pavement and some nice big sweepers.

I'm down for a meet. How many are we in the tri-cities?

Not sure who else is in the area... member map is gone ?

    Hey @Husqy

I saw that picture posted on the GTAM message board. I know Rick has a red FJ - so was just curious.

The colours are spectacular right now. Did a 15km loop through the Ancaster/Dundas Valley and the escarpment around Milton. Brilliant!

    Cheers!

Yeah the red is pretty rare! I looked for about a year before one popped up on the market. Bought it 5 years ago now :).

I'm guessing you mean 150km? I love that loop. Campbellville down through rattlesnake, into waterdown, snake road into Dundas lookout. Great little run

We should do a little tri-city meetup with the bikes!

  4. I think the fact that thousands of riders worldwide are willing to vouch for Rotella T6 oil should speak volumes to folks.

I find many riders to be so finicky about the specifics. I've even read people on this forum say that the FJ09 is 'unrideable' with the stock suspension, meanwhile I have no issues with it whatsoever when riding with all my sport bike groups (and I weigh 205 lbs). A bit dramatic if you ask me... I would say 99% of people who ride aren't pushing their bikes to the limits they are designed for, but will blame the equipment anyways.

Rotella T6 works for everyone I've ever met who uses it - your bike will be fine.

I'll leave it at that on my side; thank you for the discussion!

Just saw this video from Revzilla that goes into this very subject. What I didn't realize is that historically there never used to be a difference between oils  used in cars vs motorcycles, but with  fuel efficiency being scrutinized so heavily in modern years this has prompted the evolution  to very specific  oil blends focused on the unique operating environment of motorcycle engines.

So 4:45 in the video he specifically mentions that you can use JASO MA/MA2 oil in your bike... which Rotella T6 is. Do whatever you want, but I will continue to pay half price for my oil that has never given me (or any riders in my network) issues over the long term :)

Why does Yamaha expressly say not to use diesel oil in the tracer 900 owners manual? I know many bikers are using Rotella diesel.

Ability to reject warranty claims for no good reason and maybe because they are losing out on oil sales. Like anything else in life - money.

But also, its probably the same reason why your coffee cup says 'May contain hot liquid'. Customers are dumb and probably would slap any old oil in there without doing any research on it. Yamaha is covering their butt by telling you not to.

It takes 2.8 qts with a filter to change the oil. Is price really that big of deal? I drove a personal diesel truck for decades that took 13qts and still paid for SYN. 🙄

I do all 3 of my vehicles with Rotella T6 - it is a full synthetic oil. I buy the giant drum of oil (19L or 5 freedom gallons) and they often run a $25 rebate through Shell so it definitely makes a dent in the maintenance bill compared to buying the 'recommended' oil for each.

Red FJ-09 in the Halton Hills / North Burling area on Saturday - didn't catch what the other bike was.

Was it you @Husqy or you @piotrek?

    Rob

I was there Oct 2nd if that helps? Group of 4 of us, I was leading the way and saw a silver FJ around waterdown (I was heading towards snake road). Not sure if it was you but I waved! :P

  9. I'm running Dunlop RoadSmart3s and love them. I would've gone for the Michelin Road 5 but I don't ride in the wet much.

I'm on my second set of RS3s... Got 22k kms on the front tire (it was pretty much dead by then) and 15k on my first rear. I pretty much only ride for pleasure and look for the twisty roads. Should stand up to commuting on highway just as well because of the harder compound down the middle of the tire.

  10. My bike came with grip puppies, so I don't know any different. My bike is at 35k kms, 20k of which I put on myself so I'd say they stand the test of time pretty well!

Thinking back to my SV650, there less vibrations for sure, but the thing I like the most is it makes the controls much thicker. I have XL hands, so it feels much more comfortable with a thicket grip. I've ridden friends bikes and now they feel too skinny haha

  11. @rlambke19 same thoughts here! Bit of an 'ethical' dilemma for me - dont want to strain the system anymore than need be.

@Rick123 definitely your prerogative! If I'm being honest, I do like target the twisties quite a bit vs just riding for the sake of riding. Don't let my lack of riding stop you from organizing a meetup if you like, but I won't be going out for any long rides until things improve.

Improve again? This way you might be not riding until next year or so. May I ask what for you is not to far from home and what is? And in fact what difference does it make?

Meh, its still early in the season in my opinion. When there are nice days, I go out for a rip within an hour radius of my house (Kitchener). Couple weeks ago I did Milton down into Snake Rd and Dundas. Although government has been laughably bad, I do see 'hope' on the horizon with vaccinations picking up.

While I don't really have respect for this 'mockdown' as it were, I do respect that the healthcare system is currently stressed. Last thing I would want to do is have a spill on the bike (which is just inherently more dangerous than me going for a hike, for ex.) and take up a hospital bed. I'm a big fan of some 'dangerous' activities, but the risk is worth the reward under normal circumstances. For now, I don't want to add to the capacity problem if I don't have to.

Luckily for me I have some small projects at home I'm working on, built a home gym and some other hobbies that are keeping me busy. If not, I would be itching hard to be on the bike every chance I can!

  13. Apparently I had my notifications disabled (doh!).

Down for a meetup when COVID things start to improve again. I'm not riding too far from home for the next month; just trying to be conscious of the situation.

Happy to try to organize something around June.

  14. I love the look and I put a beak on mine over a year ago, haven't noticed an issue at all and have run it up to 230km/hr (140mph)...

I did order mine off Ali express, and the first one I got cracked when I tightened the screw, so they sent me a replacement. Since then, no issues!

Also not to get into forum 'drama', but I think @Rick123 was making a joke to OP's post where he refers to himself as a 'sensitive little fuk'

    Hey,

Thanks for your input! I would love to meet up and ride with you guys next time you plan something (once covid bites the dust)! With the mods I mentioned, my biggest battle is figuring out which to do first!! That's good to know about full system vs slip on, I've also been hearing that a challenge with exhaust swap is whether or not the centre stand can still be functional, which I dont want to give up! Im looking more and more into Hindle as I didn't realize they were so close and I love to support local!

I'm sure Hindle makes systems that work with the centre stand - thats generally why FJ09/Tracer900 exhausts and FZ09/MT09 exhausts are not interchangeable - ours has a kink in the midpipe to make room for the centre stand :)

Hindle is a great choice! My friend has their full system on his FZ09 and its lovely.

+1 to @rlambke19 comment about windscreens. I'm 6'3" and run a short windscreen (its actually the stock screen that I've shaved down). I've tried 3 other windscreens, but I'm too tall and it just ends with helmet buffeting. If you're below 6', there are lots of good options that will keep the wind off you.

Lastly, take a look at the member map here and be sure to add yourself! There are lot more Ontarians on this forum than you think :)

  16. Welcome! @Blythe As Rob mentioned, there are a few us of us Southern Ontario... I organized the Hockley meetup last year (nothing this year due to COVID) but hoping to do something again in the future.

I've done all the mods you mentioned, let me know if you have any questions. As others pointed out, slipons are rare for this bike because it requires you to cut the original system behind the headers, then install a midpipe.

I put on a full Delkevic system and paid $450 USD for it (picked it up in Detroit on my way home from the Dragon last year), but they do ship to Canada if you're interested - you'll just be on the hook for tax/duties. Here's the system I bought. Its loud, but not obnoxious (except when you get the revs up there.. then its very loud lol)

  17. Like others have mentioned, I couldn't disagree more :P Ive been running the RS3s for 20k kms. replaced the rear at 15k and the front is about to be replaced in a couple of week.

My last mechanic recommended them (he's pretty much the best mechanic in the Toronto area) and said the bang for buck can't be matched. I have to agree with him. The stock 222s that I ripped off were hot garbage, but the RS3s have been phenomenal. Won't be changing anytime soon.

I have michelin's on my SV650 before the FJ, and I did like them as well. Something tells me yours might be duds or perhaps weren't installed correctly... not sure. Very surprised that you don't like them.

I bought the OEM chain and sprocket kit, then found out it was too short for my GT. Fits all 09 bikes with short swing arm, I can’t return it because I got the box greasy. 🤬 For sale $250 Canadian.

Husqy, that for the feedback.  anything in particular you miss about the SV c/w FJ?  also should have mentioned, my last bike was a Bandit 1200 that i commuted on.  that was challenging and heavy but doable.  wife liked that one better :)

Honestly, there isnt much that I miss about the SV over the FJ... The FJ is almost my perfect bike. At my height, its way more comfortable, obviously has more power and just overall does most things better for me (touring, sport riding, gravel etc.)

The one thing I miss about the naked SV is the styling for sure. I think the FJ looks good, but its definitely not 'pretty'.

Really, the SV is just a bit more maneuverable, but I think in 99/100 situations, I'm picking the FJ.

    hi all,

i've commute in NYC almost year round (not on snow/ice days) on my 2008 sv650 for the past 3 years.  i love the bike but am considering the FJ as it seems to check a few more boxes- better set up for cold riding, better for 2 up, ABS.  that said, i do love my SV; for all the reasons everyone loves their SV

is the FJ narrow/nimble enough to lane split (rarely) and filter (frequently)?  is it still peppy with 2 up?

my commute is short ~30-40 min in traffic.  this is the majority of my riding, but i'd like more versatility to leave the city with my wife (had a bandit 1200 my wife liked sitting on; SV is less confidence inspiring for her though admittedly it still has stock suspension)

    thx in advance

    Hey 👋

I upgraded from an 09 SV650A (naked with ABS) to my 2015 FJ09.

Definitely more options for cold riding (integrated heated grips, windscreens etc), tons more power for 2 up.

I have wide bars on my FJ, and I can still split, but its no-where near as narrow/nimble as the SV650. I'm 6'3" and I always felt like the SV was small for me, but the FJ fits me great. Some people look at the FJ and think it looks big, especially when they sit on it (pretty tall of course). Personally, once you get used to the bike, its very nimble/flickable, but still not as small as the SV (physical dimensions).

I didnt upgrade from my SV due to lack of power, but riding on the FJ for the last 3 years, I think 100 hp is pretty much perfect for a motorcycle. I think your wife would be much happier on the back of the FJ than the SV650. The seat size and position is no contest.
