  1. Look what came today. DHL delivery from Australia to NE PA, USA in 9 days. It does come with a lot of printed documentation 🙄

My left pod switch from Germany for delivery by the US post office is another story, arrived in NY 8 days ago and has been to New Orleans from Philadelphia twice. Called the USPS and was told it can't be intercepted as it's one of millions of packages in the system and I just have to wait for the system to spit it out. Maybe it is time to privatize the postal service.

I must say I am surprised by how slim the new control switch from McCruise is. Yet to make my mind up which way to go.

  2. Just got a letter from Yamaha offering the YES (Yamaha Extended Service) warranty for my new left over 2017 that I purchased July 2020.

Cost is $590 plus $35 tax for 4 years after the normal 1 year warranty expires. It would be a nice selling feature to have but I do expect I will keep the bike for 5 years.

Has anyone been in a situation where this would have paid for itself. Anyone not purchase the warranty and regret it later?

Here is what the plan offers...

    Genuine Yamaha coverage.

Travel and Recreation  Interruption Protection (TRIP) up to $250

    Transferrable

    Professional Trained Yamaha Technicians

    No Deductible

    No Mileage/Hour Limits

    Nationwide Coverage

  3. The TPMS on the 595LM is a big draw for me, not sure why that was discontinued in the XT. I also like the fact that the battery is removable/replaceable in the 595LM. I think that will help with long term ownership, even though I do plan on hardwiring. I'm sure the faster processer on the XT would be great for recalculating missed turns etc, but I usually like to plan my day out.

With the updated Zumo XT version they streamlined the wiring bundle.

I looked at both and the only advantage the XT had was the improved screen definition. With the XT they dropped some features I like, such as the TPMS. The price drop on the 595LM  makes it more attractive.

I've been reviewing some you tube videos showing how to tidy up/modify the cable bundle. Probably go that route.

Hope to find an old powered mount and remove all but the power cable for hard install. I would use the stock powered mount for updates etc.

Any preference? The 30K is on closeout right now for $190. The 50S is $260. Is the 50 really $70 better? Will use it with noise cancelling headphones. I'll definitely use it a couple of multi day rides a year with one riding buddy. Would probably use it for monthly afternoon rides with another friend. A riding buddy already has a Sena 50, so I'm not looking at Cardo.

Let us know what direction you go and how you like your choice.

@Heli ATP - Hmm, not sure what Tony was suggesting there other than to discourage the DIY approach and they have indicated (in the past) a limited support if you do and things go wrong... which I get.

Having said that, I clearly have a working sytem with an OEM switch pod and it has all the functionality of their switches except for a back light.

Again, having said all that, there is nothing wrong with their switches and is then just plug and play.  I just liked the integrated look.

Also, I do have a background in the electronics field and so feel comfortable tinkering with these thing. As always YMMV. 🙂

While ordering a McCruise  I asked if I was to attempt to use stock pod components like others have, would I be better of ordering the new slim switch or the first gen control switch. Here was the response from Tony - McCruise Director...

'Please DO NOT try!  It will simply create massive headaches for you – and US!'

I do agree it is probably a liability issue. I will see how I wish to proceed when the unit arrives. I went with the new slim switch as I like the look of it placed horizontally as shown earlier by 2and3cylinders in this thread. Thanks for all the feedback guys.

  7. Turns out the left pod switch I ordered was from a MT-10. I just purchased a slim switch McCruise for my 2017.

I contacted McCruise about replacing left hand pod hand switch on the FJ-09 for their cruise control, with compatible ones like others here have and got the following response...

    Hi XXXXXX,

I am afraid putting OEM switches in combination with our kits is impractical.  You lose virtually all functionality without our switch and the patch harnesses required are extremely expensive to make and connectors near impossible to source.  Consequently, we don’t make them anymore.

Sorry we can’t help.  If you still want a kit, please choose from our array of switches.

    Best regards,

    Happy Sunday all,

Wheels are off the bike thanks to the great info I received from the forum.  Quite easy actually.

I am going to have the rims sandblasted and painted black.  Probably satin, semi gloss or gloss?  Is there a specific Yamaha black colour code that I should be considering?  What specific black is used on stock Tracers?  Thoughts or things I should consider before I do this?

    Thank you,

    Joe

but in reality having a huge battery in your head-protective-wear (aka helmet) to explode or ignite on impact isn't a great idea either.

The forcite helmet has ceramic batteries which won’t explode/ignite on impact. Regarding battery life, I wonder if one could recharge  with a rechargeable brick like device available for phones?

@Heli ATP and @draco_1967 you guys are an inspiration for the DIY crowd.

I can do very basic splicing and soldering for connectors to connect wire A to wire B but to take parts and make them work in a manner that they were not originally intended is impressive.  I cant even read a wiring diagram... 🙄

Thanks Betoney but Daz and Draco are the men. I'm just a follower. I don't even know how to add @betoney to my posts 🙃

  11. Thanks .. betoney / dazzler24. I do understand there is more than just the switch pod.

I plan on ordering the McCruise and want the install to look stock. I have the MT-10 switch pod on order and hope it will completely replace my FJ switch pod, just separating out the CC wires for the McC. This would seems the simplest option for me.

Daz, one more question. I noticed you didn't backlight the on/off button. If that button is backlit can it do the job of the multicolor LED (red/yellow/orange/green) you installed?

  12. I just ordered a used switch pod from a '17 MT-09 from Europe for $70. Fingers crossed.

The MT-10 also comes equipped with a cruise control system that can be activated in 4th, 5th and 6th gears between 50km/h and 180km/h.

A switch on the left handlebar turns the cruise control on or off, and once it is activated, the Yamaha Chip Controlled throttle (YCC-T) maintains the selected speed of the bike whether riding uphill, downhill or on a level road. Speeds can be increased in 2km/h increments with a push of the switch, and any setting is automatically cancelled by activating the brakes, clutch or throttle – while the ‘Resume’ switch restores he cruise control to its last-used speed.

  13.  I would like to add CC to my '17 FJ-09 with the FJR/XTZ switches in the FJ housing. Only thing missing from this thread is a list of parts needed for those of us who are not so smart with electronics. That way I could get a helper over when all parts are collected. What other Yamaha's have the same switches....MT10? I wonder if this MT10 switch assembly would cover everything?

Nice job on proving this is possible.
