Maybe it's hard to tell from your photos but it looks pretty good; I'm surprised.

Do you (still) have an FJ, or is the tank cowl no longer needed as a spare?

I traded the FJ for a Niken GT a couple of weeks ago. Last Year I purchased some stuff for my FJ on here and the seller put numerous extras in the box. Bits and pieces like the tank cowl and others that I don't need but have a hard time parting with. 🙄

Sand and repaint.

Exactly what I was going to say.  That textured finish will be terribly affected no matter what you do. The heat treatment, if applied very very gently and carefully, MAY help reduce how noticeable the scratches are but you will always be able to see that something happened there.

I no longer have the part in question, it's on it's way to a fellow forum member. Someday I'll gather all my Yamaha bits and pieces and put them up for grabs.
