Side case brackets

Recommended Posts

Have just installed the factory brackets and hard bags on my FJ, and couldn't help but notice how heavy and clunky the brackets are, and how they duplicate the existing structure that supports the passenger foot pegs.  They do serve the purpose, albeit crudely, but it seems like steam-train design that is oddly out of character with the bike. Anyone else notice this? Just sayin' . . . :)

I do tend to agree, it is a pretty clunky and weighty set-up. I made a virtue out of necessity by taking a 200mm/ 8" length of clear PVC plastic tube and slitting it along its length. Then slipped this onto the underside of the lhs support, just aft of the foot-peg, and secured it with a cuppla zip-ties. It cushions the part nicely so I can easily and comfortably use it to heft the bike upwards when putting it onto the main stand,. L of S

It's not a very elegant solution, that's for sure. Probably required for the necessary stiffness at the bag end, though.

I was fortunate that my dealer ordered a set of bags with the bikes, and I was the first FJ9 buyer, so I got 'em without waiting.

Here in Oz, maybe uniquely as far as I know, the bike came with the Yamaha hard panniers as standard.   This useful inclusion makes for excellent value-for-money. These hard bags are quite heavy and substantially-made, and are very similar in apparent quality and style and operation to hard bags I've had on earlier BMWs - but [em]they[/em] always came at a $1000+ extra cost!

Dress them up a bit like I did. Changes everything.

Valerie Singleton from Blue Peter would love the sticky back plastic approach. It's not to my taste. I prefer the utilitarian or ghetto look (to use what I assume is an American colloquialism for the same thing).
