Best "basic" shock?

Pattonme,  suspension is your business and I've yet to see anything but good reviews of your work, so I'may guessing you really know your stuff.  I'm planning on sending my fj09 front forks to you for the $440 treatment.  As far as a shock goes, I would like to keep the cost down in the $500-625 range.  I'm wondering if you could give your opinion on which shock you would buy if it was your money.  Preload with rebound damping adjustment and possibly length adjustment is all I'm looking for.  I'm 65 yo and have slowed a bit, just enjoy a cushy well controlled ride.  At 205 with gear, the stock setup is just too crashy and wobbly.  Thanks for any insight you or others can supply.

OT: you need the 'at sign' in front of my name to get the software to ping me.

For ~350 you can get the stock or ZX shock revalved properly and resprung by Norwest. Excellent value for performance.
see http://fj-09.org/thread/2876/rebuilt-zx6-zx10-shock-services

Working off of http://fj-09.org/thread/2028/shock-upgrades-compatible-swaps I'd personally choose in this order:
Soft factors like support network and "familiarity" with product come into play.

$500 class
[ul type=disc][*]K-Tech RAZoR Lite (not an official product, yet, if ever)[*]Matris KD (no official service network in USA)[/ul]
$600 class
[ul type=disc][*]JRi 350 Pro
[*]Nitron NTR1 or Penske 8900E[*]Cogent Dynamics or Ohlins 335[*]Hyperpro YA09-6AD or Wilbers 640[/ul]

FYI, Ohlins had a pretty significant price reduction a few days ago on shocks, cartridges, etc. for the US market. I *think* the new retail price on YA335 is $550. @pattonme @scotto
Keep Asheville weird!

  • 4 weeks later...
The Ohlins NIX-30 "street" is right around $900 (*still* trying to get a straight answer).
The YA335 is $575.

The simplified K-Tech Razor-R was announced a couple weeks ago at the Chicago show. I understand the price is ~$500 and I would pick it over the Ohlins 335 and the Matris KD, any day.

Hi, Matt, were you ever able to get an answer on the street version of the NIX-30's?  I'm looking to upgrade my suspension this year and that sounds like a really interesting option for the price you had listed above.  Thanks!

I have bad news on the NIX-30 "Street". It's supposed to be $850-900 but no idea if it's going to be 1 month or 6 before they actually start shipping them. Right now all their attention is on the racing community. If you want last year's "superbike" NIX-30 those are available in the warehouse.

@kimofj the quoted MSRP for the combo is $1300+1100=$2400 but PM for forum price.
