New FJ owner in MD

Recommended Posts

Hello -

Picked up a new blue '17 FJ a couple of months ago and have been enjoying it more and more ever since.  Still trying to deal with the usual complaints such as seat (tried the Sargent, sent it back. Corbin just arrived today) and windshield.  (I tried the VStream sport touring screen and didn't work for me so that is for sale - I'll post up soon).

Looking forward to bugging you all and contributing where I can.IMG_5531.jpg

Yes, that would be the one. I am 6' and I needed to be at least a couple inches shorter for it to work well for me so I sold it. Just installed a Madstad 20" screen yesterday and went for a ride. Seems to work really well, no buffeting like the stocker or the VStream. I might still mess with the angle and height but I think it's a keeper.

Same setup as mine. All the way up and cocked forward works best for me. Seems to push the air up a little higher.

Interesting. I am six feet, I have the same bike (mine is even blue) and have been deciding between the same two screens. I think the Madstad actually looks better on your bike, and I guess it works better too. I ordered the 22" based on Madstad's recommendation (the site lists 22" as the recommended height if you are six feet), so I'm surprised the 20" works for you. Maybe the difference is the Corbin seat. Do think the Corbin is higher or lower than stock? Is it installed at the high setting or the low one?  Also, where is the wind hitting you with the 20" screen?  Is it going over the top of the helmet or is your helmet in fresh air?

If you are trying to avoid buffeting, you made the right choice with the Madstad.  The stocker was brutal, and the VStream S/T screen was better but there was still enough for me to go for something else.  If I was a few inches shorter it would have probably been a different story.  I spoke with Blair at Madstad for a while and explained my concerns.  He said I'd probably be fine with either the 20" or the 22" being that they have a good amount of adjustability in both angle and height.  I am not a fan of really tall windshields so I wanted to get the shortest one that would do the job so I went for the 20".  Right away I could tell that it works, they designed the mount to let enough air underneath of it to alleviate the negative pressure that causes the buffeting.
The Corbin is higher than the stock seat by probably 3/4" or so, about the same as the stock seat in the high position.  I have the Yamaha windshield mount set at the middle setting, only because I feel it seems more solid than the high one (Madstad instructions say to set it at the high position).  You cannot set it at the low position, the Madstad mounting brace plate will hit the front panel.  If you look at the picture, you can see that I currently have the mount set tilted about 3/4 of the way forward and around 1" from the lowest setting.  I haven't finished messing with it though.  At that setting, the air hits me just below the top of my helmet - not loud or booming at all but you can hear a little bit of wind noise which I don't mind at all.  In fact, I have a Powerbronze shorty for the summer and I much prefer the full clean air to the booming noise of the stock or VStream in the dirty air.

I imagine if I got the 22" it would be even quieter but I am fine with the 20".  I'm sure I could get it even quieter if I raised it up more so I'm not concerned.  I'm sure you'll be very happy with the 22", let me know how it works for you.
