Premium Member DavidS Posted June 8, 2016 Premium Member Share Posted June 8, 2016 I am a bit confused about these three models, as they all seem to share the same engine, and appear mostly the same. I know the MT-09 is the European model, but is it otherwise the same as the FJ-09? and are the FZ and the FJ the same? or are there differences? Can anyone give me the short version of differences to set me straight?
suncoaster
Fj-09 is the North American only name for the MT-09 Tracer. There are regional differences - indicators are orange or clear, tuned for emissions (=jerky throttle) or not, colour choices are different in different markets. Don't know what the FZ is - perhaps a North American name for the other MT-09s ?
dakota
The FZ09 is a naked bike in North America (not sure about other market availability). In the US no traction control, no ABS, no hand guards, no fairing, no real windscreen, snatchier throttle, worse suspension, about $2,000 less than the FJ09. root
Both replies are correct. I just hope to add a little more clarity if possible. There are 5 different names for two models. FZ-09 and FJ-09 are the North American names. Like @dakota said, the FZ is a naked sport bike. The FJ is a sport touring bike that commonly gets falsely accused of being an adventure touring bike. They share an engine and frame. Everything from the subframe up is pretty much different. The FJ sits taller and more upright, adds TCS, ABS, windshield, hand guards, factory luggage mounts as an option, half faring and larger pillion seat. The international names get a bit more confusing. They changed the international name for the FJ-09 from "MT-09 Tracer" to "Tracer 900" for the 2016 model year because the name was obviously confusing given the bike they call in North America the FZ-09 is called the MT-09 internationally. Have fun with that, international MT-09 Tracer owners. FZ-09 = MT-09 2015+ FJ-09 = 2015 MT-09 Tracer = 2016+ Tracer

It seems Yamaha have split the naming in different markets. In Europe the 2016 is the "Tracer 900": http://www.yamaha-motor.eu/uk/products/motorcycles/sport-touring/tracer-900.aspx In Asia Pacific the 2016 is "MT-09 Tracer": https://www.yamaha-motor.co.nz/products/motorcycle/road/torque-sport/16-mt-09-tracer-0 In North America the 2016 is the "FJ-09": http://www.yamaha-motor.ca/products/details.php?model=4712&group=MC&catId=79 Next year it will be different.. Premium Member wessie Posted June 8, 2016 Premium Member Share Posted June 8, 2016 The UK has 2 other models as well - these are variations on the FZ09/MT09 with cosmetic changes to make the Street Rally & Sport Tracker variants. https://www.yamaha-motor.eu/eu/products/motorcycles/hyper-naked/index.aspx This signature is left blank as the poster writes enough pretentious bollocks as it is.
