Considering move from bagger to FJ

Recommended Posts

I'm 5'9" and the wind noise and buffering is not at all a factor for me.I also have rode the ducati and it may be a touch better with the windshield but that's a easy fix.For me the ducati was a dog motor wise but suspension was very good!I will take the FJ over the duck for sure just for the motor!

I'm 5'9 and not really short?.I have always worn a full face helmet and I just don't believe in brain buckets or half helmets. That is just me and for the ducati thoughts I will take the FJ all day every day over the duck because the ducati motor for me was a dog,my opinion again but after owning a ktm 950 super moto and a 2 triumph speed triples the ducati looked cool but I was not impressed performance wise. Suspension and brakes though very good.

I have 3 bikes.  One is a 2011 HD Ultra Classic.  Its a great bike and my wife prefers the comfort a heavy bike gives on long trips and even in the twists.  That being said, I ride with other guys who ride Goldwings and varies adventure bikes, included Suzuki Vstrom and others.  The HD was not keeping up in the turns and having to down shift a couple of gears to stay close.  Upgrading the cams to midrange type cams did a wonder.  I will certainly keep the HD.

However, it's heavy. I have had the FJ for about 2 months and just came back from a trip with my wife on it.  She has some trouble with the slope of the back seat, but the bike is incredibly nimble, light and importantly in the summers of south Texas, much cooler than the HD motor.

It boils down to this.  I have 3 bikes with 3 very distinct purposes.  For hard, heavy duty riding the HD is there.  I also use it for escort and parades for a pro-veteran group I ride with.  The FJ is just fun...great as a one up bike for any length of trip, but I am looking at seat options.  Has anyone tried the Seat Concepts seats?  As a 2 up bike, it depends on your passenger. I am older than most who  probably ride the FJ, being 60.  I truly love the bike and will try to figure out seating for my wife to be more comfortable.

If you and the wife want max comfort I encourage you to look at and consider a Russell Day-Long. Expensive, but if you are truly looking at putting in serious miles in a day...the Russell is a awesome seat. One only need to walk thru the parking lot at the Iron Butt Rally and look at the seats that adorn the bikes of the participants. Russell is by far the most popular seat in that category of riding. I've had two and am ordering up one for the FJ this winter. People may complain about the "wings" but after you spend 1500 miles on it in a day you will appreciate the design.

Seat Concepts doesn't make one for the passenger, at least they didn't when I bought mine.  The rider seat is an improvement over stock, but it could be better.  Wish Sargent would hurry along with the development of theirs.

Seat Concepts is a big improvement over stock because it's effectively much wider (without appearing so).

stock foam surface is maybe 10" wide before curving down.

Seat Concepts shape utilizes 13" of width.
