heavypieceofshet to FJ

Recommended Posts

OK.. now this may begin some rough issues... ( i noticed if I spell the H word it spells out another word lol...)

Don't get me wrong.. I still kept my HD  touring bike and will not depart from it.. The FJ-09 is in another league and class moto..I do agree its best bike for value and great bike too.. Had a Ninja when was young, so i know both worlds...
Then had to depart from the Ninja and family and kids became priority . Many 2 decades later, a HD was born ...
and today the FJ-09 born. I didn't even ride one yet.

How many members here have or had a HD and now ride or have a second ride and it's the FJ-09. Am i the only one  ?
My main objective was a daily commute bike, city, highway and traffic and no need to polish chrome.. just ride....Ya ill get the occasional Sport bike craze... but don't tell the wife ....

Ride Safe.

This makes me chuckle, as the FJ-09, with its exposed header pipes has caused me to buy a tin of Mothers polish and a polishing ball that fits in a drill, all so I can keep the headers looking nice.  I've never owned a HD, but now I'm venturing into polishing-land.  LOL

This may have been a controversial topic on some other forums where they worship a single make or model as if it was a deity and issue a fatwah on non-believers, to use a religious metaphor.

Many people here have bought the FJ as a second bike for the same reasons as you, their other bike is too specialised and not practical for some uses. Others have seen the FJ as an upward move after riding a smaller capacity bike for some time. Some, me included, have traded in a heavier bike for the FJ. Then there are a few who have not done so much analysis and walked into a shop, looked at the FJ and placed a deposit because it was so pretty, funky, shiny or whatever worked for them that day.

So, this place has an eclectic bunch of riders from four (I think) continents with a wide range of experiences. Around here, you will not be judged for your history with other marques or any perceived betrayal of a brand. From what I gather, this can be a feature of other forums but I wouldn't grace those with my presence.

lol.... don;t forget the few Buds while u polish... never thought of doing that to a FJ-09.. oh Nooooooo... u had to tell me !!! ;)

I think the Mothers will do a better polishing job than if I used Budweiser.  I *know* you weren't suggesting that I drink that swill, right? :D

Yes I have a Hardly Ableson which I ride and enjoy along with other Hardly enthusiasts and go to their get togethers. I also own a 1984 FJ1100 which I ride FAST and enjoy along with other FJ enthusiasts and go to their rallys. I have several other different brand bikes and enjoy riding them. When asked by a young die hard Hardly rider what I was doing wearing a Hardly T shirt when I was riding the FJ-- I replied I am not a one dimensional bike rider--I enjoy them all.

As I stated earlier, my new FJ is the 28th motorcycle I have owned. I have owned almost all of them from B to Y. ( I have never owned an Aprilia or a Zundapp, hmmm more shopping? LOL) All have their strengths and weaknesses. They ALL appealed to me at one time or another for one reason or another. I think it's silly to get all hung up on only one brand!! IMHO!

Have to agree with mcycleguy45. "All have their strengths and weaknesses. They ALL appealed to me at one time or another for one reason or another."
The FJ is the 9th bike I've owned in 25 years of riding. Trading up from a 2007 Road Star. The R-Star is a great bike for cruising but ultimately too heavy and shiny for me. After trying to love it for a few years I realized I prefer a middlewight sport bike. If I coulda kept both bikes I would, but the wife had her say...

I have no problems with Hardley Davidsen. They have pulled off one of the most genius Sales & Marketing ploys in the history of American Business, 2nd only to the Mormon Church.

Their bikes look awesome and their brand loyalty is so epic that they could stick two wheels on an actual turd, price it at $50,000 and people would stand in line to order it.

It's the HArdley owners who look down their noses at anyone who rides anything except for a heavypieceofshet that I take issue with.

My cousin is an EMT and he picks their dead corpses out of the rocks and trees that line a Twisty road from Boise to Idaho City every year. No gear, no skill, the corner went left and they kept going straight into the trees. About 4 HD riders die on that road ea year.

It isn't HD the bike that kills them, it's that God Dammed HD attitude that kills em every year. And HD salesmen who gladly sell 750 lb bikes to guys in their middle ages who havent ridden since Highschool.

Idaho recently did an in depth survey and found that the majority of Motorcycle deaths in Idaho involve Middle Aged men on Cruisers, with no or inadequate helmets. That really shook up the common thinking on the subject here in Idaho, as many predicted that it wold be youth on sportsbikes.

So, when we started playing with certain words on this forum, I had hoped that causing hardley Davidsen to be spelled correctly, and resulting in it being changed to Heavy Piece of shet, it may just end up saving one life. And one less corpse for my cousin to pull out of the trees and rocks.

There is a "heavypieceofshet Guy" at work that doesnt ride.   He literally every day wears a different HD shirt and since I've known him (~8 years) he's never been on a bike.
He woke up in the hospital one day because he says he got hit and because he was wearing zero gear, he was very lucky to live.
He hasnt ridden in almost 15 years and starts talking to me about getting a new bike and I urged him to take a refresher class to get his skills back up.  He gave me a real long look then launched into this tirade about "I know how to ride, ive been riding my whole life... blah blah blah" BS - he hasnt ridden ANYthing in 15 years!!
He brings his GF in the other day (who looks like she just rolled out of a motel room in Sturgis and hasn't bathed in a week) and he is giving her the tour they come by my office and the first words out of her mouth are "Rice rocket" because she saw my helmet and instantly knew I didn't have a "Real bike" and she, of course, is a non rider as well (ironically I was on the Triumph that day - not really a rice rocket)
Point is both of these characters have judged me on what I ride (not even HOW I ride) based on what?  Their bike preference?  And they arent even riders.....mind you I have put well over 100k on various different kinds of bikes over the past 10 years and I ride every day.

On this site we happily make fun of lots of different brands - all of them given enough time.  In fact we probably should change;

Yamaha to Yamahahaa
Honda to Souless Machine
Suzuki to Rice Rocket
Kawasaki to Horsepower is our God
Moto Guzzi to Well at least it's pretty
Triumph to YAY IT RUNS
Ducati to Torture Rack

MotoGuzi should either default to Hipster H arley or Italian heavypieceofshet. :D
you traduce me you cad
I was considering a Moto Guzzi Stelvio and Norge a while back. They are very nice bikes and quite reliable nowadays it seems. It's a shame the dealer network is so sparse and rarely has the bike you want to look at in stock, let alone a demo bike.

I don't think I would ever buy a new bike that carries an undeniable design flaw as a proud part of its heritage.  Aren't all Guzzi's V twins, stuffed into the frame the wrong way?  FWIW, I'm no fan of boxer motors, either.  Any bike that exhibits a tendency to lean to one side when revved is no bike for me. (though they sure sell well to the trust fund kids at Bob's Java Hut).

@vespadaddy - you need to alter your prejudices - your criticism of shaft drive may have applied two decades ago but does not apply now or on anything made this century.

I quite like the cylinder arrangement. I like any engine that does not conform to the inline four model. Hence my current bike is a triple, before that a 1200cc parallel twin with offset crank and a boxer twin before that. Previous bikes have been a 650cc single, 2 V4s, a parallel twin and one solitary inline four.
