  1. I've had this happen to me once, about a month ago. The bike was about 5000 miles. After about 3 or 4 goes at starting it, I turned the key off. Waited a second, then turned it on and it started right up. So that matches other's observations. Hopefully that will always work, but it does leave one a bit anxious.
  2. I've been using Maxpedition duffels, a smaller one for day to day and a larger one as needed for trips. The Soloduffel (pictured on bike) is 22L, converts to a shoulder bag (it is 2 point or 3 point, one strap over the shoulder and another that can attach to that strap at the waist for more stability - easy on/off). The Unterduffel is 38L, converts to a backpack. I also got the raincover for it and it has successfully withstood some downpours. With the carabiner bungees looped under the seat and another set over the protruding pillion handles, it is a very quick and easy on/off. Undo the front carabiners and it slides right off the back.
  3. Is a pair required? One for the left, one for the right?
  4. These LEDs have the hyper flashing problem. While I understand how a resistor would fix that problem, and it seems the simplest to install, it is also undesirable IMO. I'd rather not have the energy go straight to heat in a resistor if I don't have to. For example it'll just chew through the battery faster if the hazards are on while the engine is off. How does one install a relay to fix this problem? any good instructions, and any preferred relays?
  5. I installed the Proton 500 Flushmounts. The website lists them as a fit for the FJ-09, the Tracer 900 (GT) is not listed. Indeed they are flush, small and *bright*. I do have the concern that because of new signal position on the T900, below the "fold" of the side panel (compared to the FJ-09 which placed them above the fold, as was discussed some here), these are now nearly invisible from dead on in front of the bike. They hide behind the front of the side panel. The GIFs are not to time scale (they flash faster). Also, the off state is misleading because the running lights are dimmer by having a fast strobe, not visible to the eye but the camera catches the true off state. Not sure what to do with this. Aesthetically OK, and I can now sneak the bike around the back end of the car into the garage without scratching the car with the bulbous signal. But it is not 100% satisfactory from a safety perspective. I'd rather have the signal in the old FJ-09 location. Does an FJ-09 side panel fit on a T900?
  6. There is a little computer in there. It is trivial for the program to have a small calibration table adjust for the odd fuel container shape. I consider this about the most annoying thing about the motorcycle (after fixing the foot peg crowding problem), because it asserts itself with every ride. It's also impossible to upgrade. Yes, one can work around it. Not bad for a "most annoying thing".
  7. It's not that hard to find on the Yamaha website. 2PP-F84G0-V0-00 https://www.shopyamaha.com/product/details/hard-saddlebag-mounts?b=Search&ls=yamaha-motor-company
  8. Ride on over to San Diego with the wind screen, I'll hand you the cash, and we can head up to Mt Palomar.
  9. Sorry, I don't know the part number. I went to Fun Bike Center (dealer in San Diego) and talked to someone in the parts department, who ordered them for me.
  10. I've exchanged emails and a phone call with them. They said they've been having problems with the website since Friday. I made the order on the phone. Funny that you guys can get through. I've added my work laptop to the mix of devices that don't work for me. Somehow my account must be screwed up. I set up the account Sunday, during their claimed web site problems, so maybe it was corrupted.
  11. Failure on both desktop (Windows/Firefox/Time Warner) and smartphone (Android/Chrome/Verizon) leave me pretty sure it can't be my end. All I can think now is that it is my account (started Sunday) at TT which is corrupted.
  12. I can't find it. It is not on page 4-24, the only place referenced in the index. On page 4-11 the display is described and it says "If a problem is detected in the quick shift system, this indicator will turn off and the quick shift system will be unavailable." Nothing about operator shut off. When I read the manual, my understanding was that it can't disabled, and I was surprised. I was looking for it, but it is still possible that I missed it if it is not indexed.
  13. OK, this sounds nuts but is anyone able to use the Twisted Throttle website to buy anything? I've been trying for the last 30 hours. I can't load the cart or the checkout pages, I just get a completely white blank page. That's on a Windows machine with Firefox. I've restarted Firefox, rebooted, tried Windows Explorer, and disabled aspects of the firewall. All the same. Then I tried on my Android phone, Chrome browser, connected to Verizon Wireless (bypassing our home Time Warner ISP) and got the same result. A completely blank white page. No ability to check on the cart or checkout. So, I finally decided on the MRA Sport Screen for the bike. But Twisted Throttle appears to be the only distributor for the US. I've never used TT before.
  14. I went for a ride yesterday (Sunday), from Scripps Ranch to Idyllwild and back. As I approached Ramona east bound on SR-67, I swear I saw my bike's twin going the other way. Was it you?
  15. How in heck would one figure that out? Great tip.
  16. Glad you enjoyed, but mostly glad you survived!!
  17. I've managed to ride a lot of fun roads in California. The most fun I had was June, 5 weeks ago, on M-50, or Mountain Highway 99, or whatever it is called from California Hot Springs to Johnsondale. Perhaps it says more about my slowly improving skills and the new much improved bike (the T900GT) than the road itself, but I managed to hit a smooth zen dance between 2nd and 3rd gears going through curve after curve. That trip ended with me on the side of I-215 in Riverside for 3 hours with a flat tire. My first flat on the road. After 4 Dynaplug strings it still wasn't holding air, it was getting dark, and I called for an expensive and very slow to arrive tow. I still rate it among the net best motorcycling days I've had. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.
  18. As a minor suggestion, a section dedicated to discussion of the forum itself would be useful for these kinds of topics. I resorted to the search function to find this. One observation for me - I cannot find the member map when looking at the forum on my Android phone with the Chrome browser. All of those menu items on the top of the screen in "desktop" browser mode I am unable to find in the mobile browser mode. Is there something different that should be enabled on the forum server side for mobile browsers?
  19. 36, you bet! Here approaching from the west on my pre-T900GT bike (Honda CB500X, still in the stable, getting less and less attention). NorCal is nice. Maybe Red Bluff or Shasta Redding is a good home base, if they don't get too ridiculously hot. My parents live outside of Auburn CA. I don't really like that part of the Hwy 49 corridor, it actually somehow feels sort of crowded. While obviously less dense than a place like San Diego, the population has perhaps exceeded what a "no urban planning" philosophy can appealingly support. I actually didn't mean the discussion to be all about my preferences, just cool to know what everyone thinks. Personally, I love the west and I'd like access to the west (from the Rockies to the left coast). To me, a weakness of San Diego in the corner here is it is so darned far from so many cool places. From a centrality (within the west) standpoint, Utah may be best. Shasta / Red Bluff would be better than SD. Another recent thought is Grand Junction CO. It has relative centrality-within-the-west going for it. I think you'd lose the winter riding, but that is very difficult to maintain outside of the coast or deserts in the west.
  20. I am really not sure where this post belongs ... feel free to move it. Along the lines of "where should I convince my wife we should retire?", what are the best cities for motorcyclists? My primary interest is the USA, but bring on the world. My thoughts on things to consider to make a city good for a motorcyclist specifically (outside of the usual stuff a non-motorcyclist would value): lane splitting OK (plus for California) weather - not too hot, but especially not too cold (frozen water kills the whole venture). Sunny days for riding. the law is not ridiculously harsh (Virginia - 20mph over could mean a year in jail!?) day trips: <1 hour, access to nearby rural areas for scenic rides, including some twisty enough for fun. multi-day trips: close to multiple mountainous and wilderness destinations for longer rides, twisties, camping, hiking, destinations like national parks. Ideally the fun (back roads, scenery) starts almost immediately as you leave town. I am in San Diego California. I live north of I-8 and just east of I-15. I am sort of on the edge ... within civilization but there are no freeways between me and the San Diego back country. SD satisfies 1,2,3,4 pretty darned well (hello Palomar!). But we're in the corner of the country; excluding Mexico (a different kind of adventure) it just takes a long time to get anywhere, and you generally have to go through the loathsome greater Los Angeles / San Bernadino / Riverside complex to get anywhere (no offense intended, mates!). Still, in about 4 hours I could be at the southern Sierra Nevada or highway 1 along the coast. All and all, I'd have to say that San Diego is pretty good. But the grass is always greener ... it must be greener somewhere. I've always been in SoCal and dream of smaller towns ... Boise or Spokane come to mind but I've never even visited and I worry about the winter. Where should I fantasize about? Is this the best there is?
  21. I looked for some specs on fast chargers. It took a while to find one that gave a spec for the current in to the charger (they all show the current out of the charger) but finally came upon this one https://www.amazon.com/CHGeek-Charger-Voltage-Waterproof-Motorcycle/dp/B07F835TCJ I'd interpret that as 12V 2.5A (30W) from the DC outlet into the charger, and up to 12V 1.5A (18W) out of the charger. The missing 12W is loss, dissipated as heat in the charger. These 18W chargers could suck more than 2A out of the port. 2A is rather low. I am thankful for this thread, which I happened to read last weekend, or I would have plugged in my 6A pump Tuesday night and blown the fuse!
  22. Mine is almost always (not literally always) 10% optimistic. And it is annoying, because it would be so easy to calibrate it out. I'd love a user configurable calibration factor.
  23. I have no problems, the cases slide right on and off. I took a bunch of before after measurement pictures I can share. It looks like the end points of the stays are about 16.5 inches apart with the newly installed FJ-09 stays, versus 17 inches apart with the original T900GT stays. That is only ~0.25inches per side (~.5cm). So it is pretty close. I also measured from the end point of the stay to the two slots that the side cases slide into on the frame ... those measurements look the same from old install to new install. The minor change doesn't give me any issues, the side cases slide right in and out, and they have been perfectly stable at speed in the wind. Good luck!
  24. Has anyone tried Rev'It Trail H2O or Gravel OutDry? Thinking forward (if I buy these), do you know how to get these resoled? From my emailing of Rev'It and Vibram, it seems like you have to work through Rev'It directly and the process and price is unclear. The soles at any rate don't seem to be for sale on their own.
