  1. yeah that's solid, and I do similar in email to a few friends and family. The tracker is a great piece of mind when riding in areas I know are hours away from civilization. I primarily use it for backpacking though, where I could easily be 4 - 5 hours hike from other people. That's a good strategy you have.
  2. I took some time to document trip planning and how to handle something like this in a calm and organized way. I have a lot of training in this area from my other hobbies so I figure I'd share this after I heard some friends and other people talk about how situations like this are what keep them from doing adventures and such. 3. Hey everyone. I posted about my oil pan breakdown ad nauseum on this forum over the last week (there is a link to that write up in the link below), but I wanted to share something that could help others in the bigger picture for trip planning. I am a Sr Trip Leader for the Colorado Mountain Club for backpacking and have a good bit of training on trip planning and emergency preparedness for things going to shit. I use that knowledge a lot in my motorcycle adventures, and figure this kind of method and way to look at planning and dealing with an emergency while on the road could help others: Surviving being stranded : Lessons from the desert. – Interwebs of Joe I wanted to catalog the various lessons, and thoughts I’ve had... I know many people see issues others have and it concerns them or scares them from taking big fun trips, or going off the beaten path. I hope this can help folks realize with some basic planning and a clear head these situations aren't as dire as they may seem.
  4. This! One of the prime reasons I bailed on triumph after 9 years, everything took min of 2 weeks to get even common parts. but besides that, I did love my triumph!
  5. I just did this today (accidentally hit the horn) and scared myself and the old lady in the cross walk maybe I need this!
  6. Yup, I am actually OK with the mounts being the weak point, because the goal is to avoid losing oil in the middle of nowhere, not as much protecting the guard mounts Anything that can spread out an impact over a larger area of the engine and avoid cracking the sump is key. In my case, the mounts bent (all 3) as well as the sump guard plate.
  7. I put in just about 3L swapping the pan after the bike sat for 3 days after the hit + new filter.
  8. The one that was hit is too messed up, but I have a new one coming on Friday. I may take a paper template from it.
  9. I put an endoscope in it to check and it was clean.
  10. I am going to be mounting a new SW-Motec sump guard on the bike, and I am going to be ordering a 4-5mm sheet of stainless steel that I am guessing (havent done my final measurements yet) will be ~80 -100mm wide and almost as long as the Motec plate. And have it run along the side with the sump. Secured with 8 countersunk 4mm or 5mm screws/nuts This should make the plate itself much stronger to avoid the front from bending up and should spread out any impacts under the engine to be less pointy like I had happen. At first I thought of JB weld but I figure just using 6 or 8 screws would do well enough.
  11. Figure I'd add onto this thread I posted about it on other threads, but this seems to be on-topic content Full run down on how it happened is here: A Motorcycle Trip Cut Short : 2020 Strikes again. – Interwebs of Joe About a week ago I left on a motorcycle trip/adventure as I talked... New pan is going on tonight as soon as UPS gets here. Has anyone pulled the strainer to see if anything ended up in there from any of the other oil pan breaks? Update: pic of my new oil pan installed. Nice 60 min job start to finish.
  12. if I cant find the tracking info... ( I haven't found the receipt yet) I will just mail another one.
  13. So... I MAY try to finish most of my trip in the coming week(s) if the weather holds out... the bike should be back and on the road by this weekend... and there is a small chance I may try to head out over the weekend to hit up some of the stops I wanted to.
  14. Absolutely, I've been kind of planning around a situation like this for a while, and I've broken down on the side of the road before with previous bikes. This does bring some clarity to planning and preparation. The joke with my friends and wife is that "if I would have dumped the bike and gotten hurt, this would have all been much easier... I would just hit the SOS button on my InReach and shit would be taken care of. " It was kind of funny how in most other things I would "McGuyver" my way out of a situation to get to down.. but when I saw oil pouring out... I knew this was over right then and there. I am happy with the Innovv overall, I wish it had some better quality (I am running the high bitrate firmware, a 10 hour day fills up close to 180GB of data!). But I cant argue with the form factor and consistency it has.
  15. I posted a blog entry with the full write up of the trip and has video of the incident that broke the bike as well: A Motorcycle Trip Cut Short : 2020 Strikes again. – Interwebs of Joe About a week ago I left on a motorcycle trip/adventure...
  16. And one last thing... it seems the hazards use a lot of juice, I had them running for ~ 1.5 - 2 hours and it tripped my Antigravity Lithium battery to go into protection mode and shut down! Another reason to go to LED signals and plate light I guess
  17. Keep in mind that all this "roadside assistance" is predicated on tow companies actually wanting to come get you and working at AAA's or your insurance prices. Which was my issue.
  18. Also if you look at Givi's monster engine guard (Manual here: https://filestwistedthrottlecom.s3.amazonaws.com/Installation Instructions/Givi/GIVI.RP2139.pdf ) IT mounts to the frame or hard points on the engine, and has an extra pad/protection under the sump.
  19. So I spent the morning cleaning the bike up and pulling the damaged plate off. The hole is nice and dead center in the sump. The plate did a pretty good job it seems taking some hits, but in the end it was not able to save the sump. I am actually curious if placing a small 2mm sheet of stainless steel between the plate and sump would be a good call. The guard can take the direct hit and impact and the stainless steel can spread out the force across the entire sump. Besides for cleaning the bike in general, I cleaned both tires with simple green HD, scrubbing them a few times around and rinsing off. then rubbed them down wiht a shop rag with brake cleaner for one last time (and that pulled out what seems like the remaining oil). the Tires feel like they are good to go right now... but who knows. Going to take it easy at first. Otherwise the bike is in stellar shape and cleaner now than its been in a year
  20. So for my insurance, they covered me ... or said they would. But none of the tow companies wanted to work with them. It was a real bullshit game of the insurance company wanting a reasonable rate, and the tow companies wanting to gouge them... all while i stood on the side of the road. I ended up calling a small tow shop on my own and just paying cash and am going to fight with the tow company later. BTW I am back home in Denver ,a nice 450mile cargo truck drive home. No drama, just a long drive. Bike is in the garage and tomorrow I go at it with buckets of hot water + HD Simple green (which is purple...) . the parts for the bike should be in mid next week, but i want to get the damaged plate removed, and get the bike prepped to remove the exhaust and oil pan.
  21. This is a solid idea/start. BTW if anyone breaks down around ABQ, NM ... i have an awesome tow guy I can recommend
  22. Edit: I found the right part numbers. Just ordered a new "oil pan" "Strainer cover", and gasket. $150 all up shipped isnt a bad repair. Ordering another load of oil, and a filter. So... now the question... the rear tire. Since the rear tire was SOAKED in motor oil... is there any saving it? hit it with some simple green or non petrol degreaser? I'll do some reading.
  23. and yes, I bought, and put those ramps together today... harbor freight + ace hardware to the rescue
