  1. Have a laminar lip on my stock screen. Definite improvement, but I'm 5'10, not 6'3. I'd be concerned it wouldn't be tall enough for you. At your height, I'd think the screen in the low position would be good.
  2. Did something similar in a long, empty parking lot. I understand why the FZ without TC is a wheelie monster. Heck, I'm comfortable enough on the FJ that sometimes the front wheel comes up in 2nd by accident merging into traffic a little aggressively.
  3. Very little. The whole screen wobbles a little more than it did without the Lip. The Lip doesn't seem to move relative to the screen.
  4. My review is here (1 post up): Laminar Lip review I was reminded of the Laminar Lip from the same thread. They've been around forever, but, to me, always looked goofy on sporty bikes. I think of the FJ as more of a touring bike, so it looks ok. The company is here: Laminar Lip
  5. Added Scotchlite retroreflective tape. Couldn't find sheets of tape, so I just bought a 50' x 1/2" roll. It wasn't hard to use half of it. I have no idea how I used so much. I followed some of the lines on the bags. I'm a sucky artist, so I wasn't adventurous enough to make free form designs. I added some pieces to my helmet, too. We sit so upright on this bike that, unlike the flat back on my old sportbike, other drivers might see the tape on my helmet. The tape is flexible enough to curve without piling up. Photo without flash: Photo with flash: The rear: Added a Laminar Lip (see the big thread in the windshield section for my post about it).
  6. Short review of my Laminar Lip. I've got about 20 miles on it so far. I'm looking for reduced wind noise. I never had a buffeting problem. Ordering was easy. Just under $100 shipped IF you select USPS Priority (default is the more expensive UPS Ground). They do allow returns so long as you don't use the adhesive and don't scratch it. Initial set up is relatively easy. They recommend placing it between 1" above the stock windscreen and halfway up the Laminar Lip (maybe 2.5" above the stock screen). I used painter's tape and rode with it taped in those two different places on the stock windscreen. I settled on a position about 2" up, because I didn't like seeing the gap between the bottom of the Lip and the top of the windscreen if I looked down. I still look over the top of the Laminar Lip at their max recommended height with the windscreen in the tall position. I'm 5'10" with a 31" inseam. There is no interference with mirrors or handguards in any of the 3 positions. It's an improvement, but it's not a miracle. Think of it this way: the wind noise with the Lip is about the same volume as the stock screen when the bike is moving 20 - 25 mph faster. IOW, wind noise at 50 mph with the Lip is similar to wind noise without the lip at 25 - 30 mph. The sound has more bass. This is with the screen in my preferred positions (up with the Lip and down without). Wind noise behind the screen in my normal riding position is now quieter than standing up well above the screen in open air (used to be the opposite). I still get airflow into the top vents of my helmet and I still had light rain hit me with the face shield up. The windscreen doesn't shimmy, at least up to ~ 70 mph that I rode. Here's the BUT: All the benefits above are with the Lip on in a specific position and the windscreen high. Lip low + screen low = improvement and Lip high + screen high = improvement. But Lip low + screen high = small improvement and Lip high + screen low = no improvement. The Lip is designed to be placed once on the screen and left. It can be adjusted, but it's a pain to do so. There is some low frequency, small amplitude buffeting between 30 and 40 mph when my helmet shield is cracked open that wasn't there before. It goes away if I speed up, slow down, or tip my chin down slightly. There is a patch of turbulent air if I raise myself up from sitting to a squat. Air is still clean if I stand all the way up. At night there is a small amount of glare reflected from the dashboard. Overall, I would say that the screen is worth considering. I think I will keep it and ride with it. The price is good. They have a liberal return policy. It will probably be perfect for a few people, but it will not work for everyone.
  7. Ordered a laminar lip tonight. So that will be one more data point.
  8. Darth Feejer My son gave me a Darth Vader Father's Day card and I used the emblem from it on the bike. With the great and the FJ's "face" it fits. Need to use something more permanent than double sided tape.
  9. The guy that maintains the Yamaha demo fleet says that he uses semi synth at 600 miles then full synth after that. He changes oil every 4000 miles. I used Castrol at 600. I use Castrol because my dad uses Castrol. Castrol was cheaper at Cycle Gear, too. Thank goodness we have an oil thread on this forum.
  10. When they said change the oil at 600 miles, I took them seriously. Swapped the FJ briefly for an old, faired GS500 for about 30 miles so my friend could ride the FJ. That bike has some shortcomings but it was better than I expected. It's just so short! Just funny that I managed to get my first service at exactly the right mileage. Few hours later: Oil change is done and darn that was . A little bit overtorqued, but nothing a long socket wrench couldn't break. I was a little surprised a socket actually fit over the bolt with that little bolt protector flange in front of it.
  11. How do you like the Trex sliders? What do you have on the engine lowers?
  12. Anyone find it annoying that the positive terminal is covered by a BLACK cover and a RED wire connects to the negative terminal? The battery is clearly marked, but I always think RED = hot.
  13. New AGV K4 helmet for the wife or kid to ride with me (they're the same size right now). New pair of A* GP Plus gloves because I finally blew a seam on my old pair (2 street crashes and ~ 7 years). Both on sale at Cycle Gear for $100 each.
  14. Anyone try to raise the front forks a little? I'm still breaking mine in so the only time my front end gets light is when I make brief runs past 4000 rpms. But it seems to me with the sit-up-and-beg seating position combined with the front surface area/wind that was mentioned, this bike has much less weight over the front end compared to an FJR or a sportbike especially at higher speeds with wind lift. Raising the forks would have the effect of shifting more weight on the front end. BUT it would also make the steering quicker (I think) and could make the wobble worse. I know some folks on this board have raised forks. Anyone of those care to comment on the steering wobble?
  15. Set sag and installed my GPS harness and RAM mount. Also installed my man purse, er, tank bag.
  16. Installed Givi v35 hard bags Very, very nice looking. Looks OE
  17. Those pictures are wee, I mean, you know, small. Got the recall done and got a license plate. Got insurance yesterday. I'm legal!
  18. I've been in A* S-MX waterproof boots for ~ 10 years. This is my second pair and A* re soled my first pair for my life. They are very waterproof and very comfortable.
