  1. Trying to retire my Scorpion EXO T1200. Excellent 1st impression. 3 years in, I'm replacing it. It feels worn out. The padding is worn out. The air pump system to size the cheek pads leaks air. I get a headache after about an hour on my forehead. The protective styrofoam is wearing noticeably from the inside. The sun visor scratches ridiculously easily. The liner is frayed in places. The plastic in the little sleeve around the helmet strap is cracked. My previous two Shoei's never had these problems. My first helmet, an HJC, didn't have Shoei longevity either. It vents pretty well around the top of the head. Mediocre at the chin. Noise was similar to the Shoei X-11 which was never considered a quiet helmet. I'm replacing it with a Klim TK1200 based on online reviews. I only find it online (or 300+ miles away). Ordered directly through Klim. Rated a similar head shape. Hopefully it fits. Otherwise I'll be looking at Schuberth C3 Pros.
  2. Haven't crashed in either of these jackets. I left my leather out of this discussion since I understood the same thing. I have crashed in leather and continued to use it after checking it out.
  3. How long does a textile jacket last? Specifically does armor age to when it's no longer protective? I have a Roadcrafter that I bought used 10 years ago (by memory it might have been 5 years old when I bought it). I had it refreshed 4 years ago after a crash and now the liner seams are starting to fray again. The armor in it is original. Do I refresh again? Do I replace armor just in case? I have 2 Teknic jackets, a mesh probably 16 years old and a multi-layer probably 13 years old. Both have some ground in dirt, but otherwise look and feel fine. Neither one has been crashed. Are they still safe? Does armor compress or become brittle over time? I can't find any info about lifespan. CE armor is made out of many different materials so there probably isn't one standard. I'm riding more so I'm willing to invest in good gear. But I don't want to spend money unnecessarily. What say y'all?
  4. I don't recommend any gear with an inner waterproof layer. They're fine for a 30 minute commute, but not much longer. The outer layer holds water and eventually it finds a way to soak through. I have an old Teknic jacket I really like. The inner layer is a mesh jacket. A waterproof layer zips to the outside (and an insulated layer to the inside but it's REALLY bulky that way). It also has a rubber zipper guard inside. Water still gets in through the collar. Even my 1 piece Aerostich still eventually gets water up the sleeves. Now for boots A* boots with Gore tex are great. Drystar works, too, but it's much less breathable. So long as I have waterproof pants over the tops of the boots, water never gets in.
  5. This is a nice photo of our motorcycle next to a field after the rains about 2 weeks ago.
  6. So does the FJ have an anti-knock sensor that lets us run 87? In almost 20 years of riding motorcycles, all of them required 91+ octance. I've probably used 87 < 6 times and always filled up around half a tank with 91+. And where does someone find E0 91? One station locally had it about 10 years ago, but it went away when they changed ownership.
  7. Another update. The inner sun visor is completely scratched up. Any low sun angle makes the visor useless. I'm wondering if the visor is rattling around when it's stowed. The scratches are only in the lower half of the visor. The inner visor does not appear to be replaceable or come out of the helmet. It fogs terribly now. It must have been a coating. Part of this is the Givi touring screen - less airflow. I have some anti-fog coating I must reapply. Between fogging, rain, standing water and beat up roads that still had a fair amount of traffic including 18 wheelers, I felt unsafe. Fit still feels good, but the forehead pads has compressed, and I'm slowly rubbing into the styofoam. The black foam coating is gone. EDITED TO ADD: After posting this I read through online comments. Apparently the sun visor is easily scratched even when cleaning with a microfiber towel. There IS a coating that is easily removed with what I consider "normal" cleaning (microfiber towel and Windex).
  8. One of my favorite straight roads in the country.
  9. I don't have a problem with my bike. I understand what you are saying - a friend sold a Triumph 955i Sprint because his hands went to sleep in 45 minutes. I have never had that problem on any bike I've ridden. There is more vibration than some other bikes, but it has never been an issue in up to 400 mile days.
  10. Nice helmet, Cap. Where do you mount the shield? HJC has some great cross marketed helmets. I just wish HJCs fit my head.
  11. They have 2 different style ramp trailers. The motorcycle style has a place to slot the front wheel. Either should work on the OP's CX5. They worked fine on my Subaru. Buy a decent set of tie downs. Couldn't get my set of canyon dancers to work with the hand guards. Upgraded to an F150 and that is better. Can do a lot more with it than the Subaru. I miss my stick shift, though.
  12. Zip tied them around the handlebar risers. No problem.
  13. Work. Supposed to rain so I parked in the garage today.
  14. Ridden out that way - roads around Irvine were so much fun - but on my old WR250X. The FJ has really only been between Cairo and Cadiz in Kentucky.
  15. I have the Kappa version of the screen... identical. Good screen, but I had to ditch the 1/2" offset spacers for best result.Good idea. I might try that. I think it's quieter when I'm closer to the screen. I also need to remember to check to see if the dealer kept the handlebars forward when they did the recall. If not, that will bring me closer, too.
  16. Just installed the D2122DT today and did a quick ride. It replaced the stock screen with a Laminar Lip. The lip helped a great deal under about 40 mph and a little above that. Now with the Givi, without earplugs I was surprised how loud the engine when revved! In normal riding, the new screen helps a great deal under 60 and continues to help above 60. A booming bass is still there but higher frequencies are gone. I get much less airflow to my face, but I can feel wind in the top vents of my helmet. If I slouch, I can find a completely windless pocket of air. Just sitting, and the wind is still cleaner than standing in straight wind blast. I think I'll like it.
  17. I had 2 Kawasakis about 15 years ago. Both of them sounded "clacky" like the Yamaha. That was normal for Kwaks of that age. Does you Versys making the same mechanical noises?
  18. Ordered. I saved a little money with slow shipping. Cables are good, but a hassle. I won't leave the helmet locked up on the bike when I go to work for a 24 hour shift, but this will be great for running a grocery errand or lunch with the bike parked in front of the store/restaurant. Thanks! Good find.
  19. My mistake. I have GB Racing. They're slightly cheaper. But you bring up a good point. I spent about $300. The cost of the parts protected is less than $500, so not that's not much more expensive. Higdonion's frame is much more substantial, costs about $400, and protects about the same parts (but presumably better given how much stouter it looks). IMO, it's not as aesthetically pleasing, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But the case savers should last through multiple low sides (hopefully I never have one). And if I open a hole in an engine case, the ride is over until I can get it repaired. I can't imagine any old Yamaha dealer stocks FJ/FZ09 cases. That will most likely mean the end of whatever trip I'm on. With case savers, I can finish the trip and decide whether I should replace them or not. I dropped my sportbike three times (dropped, lowsided on ice, and lowsided on track) and spools let me dust it off and finish the ride/track day. It's definitely anecdotal, but this kind of protection has worked for me in the past.
  20. I've always had good experiences with sliders and case savers. They sacrifice themselves to protect the engine. I have Shogun sliders and R&G case savers. They're less expensive than an engine guard and IMO more aesthetically pleasing.
  21. Unfortunately for me, I know that the RF-1200 and any HJC's don't fit me. The Shoei GT-Air also mentioned does. Maybe that helps folks with fitting.

  23. @kamalv - https://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/givi-eh2122-handguard-extensions-yamaha-fj-09-2015-2016 Sign up with email. I signed up maybe back in November. They received 2 pair 2 weeks ago, but I was too slow. They received another 2 or 3 pair last week. Order them the same day you receive the email, or they'll probably be gone. Revzilla said that's how they typically receive Givi parts - 1 or 2 at a time. I stuck with Revzilla because (1) they have good customer service and (2) I had a $30 in ZillaCash from a previous order.
  24. Nice. Your leathers look well aged like mine. Maybe interested in a Talladega track day in mid-August through Sportbiketracktime? I'm on the fence since I have to time tires. Just got back from the dealer who installed the CCT fix. Delivery to the dealer to pick up took less than 90 minutes. They schedule me since I live about 70 miles away. This was the first transport in my truck. The truck was bought after my 13 year old Subaru tried to overheat trailering the moto home from the dealer after some maintenance (among other overheating problems that can't seem to be fixed). Installed larger Givi hand deflectors for the apparently non-existent winter we're having (77 in Feb???). Saw these on Revzilla and decided they would help in the winter. They're about an inch taller above and below the old handguards. They sweep back more and wrap around the sides, too.
