Mx4life120
I have the same problem. At 600 miles I noticed it, at 6500 when I changed the rear tire it had about the same play. Now at 14.5k it's still the same, irritating but not an issue.
adjuster
When I've had mine apart, they tend to use very little grease on them at Yamaha when they assemble the bike. On my FZ01, I pulled it apart, and lubed up the all the needle bearings, and it helped with operation. Did not get a chance to do this on the FZ09, and plan on doing it when I change the shock on the FJ09. I use a high moly marine rated grease. It's very water resistant to washout, and the moly on the slow moving joints is perfect for lubrication over years of use.
fj09max
Hi Just found out that my right dog bone (connecting arm) is rubbing against the relay arm. I'm trying to understand what is going in??? Fist image is the rubbing occurring, hard to see Here is on the other side. There is a large gap between the connecting arm and the relay arm. Look like the bearing / collar are not in the centre of the relay arm. Now how can I fix that? Thanks for helping.

Check the swing arm and relay arm for side play. If it was me I would take it to the dealer and have yamaha pay for it.
sp1ros
I get it on mine as well. A few mm of play as described (3500 miles on the clock)

Did you show this to technicians?? Yes indeed, they took some pictures and have sent them to Yamaha Canada. They give me back the bike saying that this was normal. They have not dismounted anything. Picture, phone call and voilà everything was fixed... They are Yamaha specialist so.... They should know what they are talking about, ehhhh right? If it is not getting any worst I will wait until the end of the season and inspect it myself.
xlxr
There was another thread asking how much play in the linkage is normal. Due to the loose fit of the bolts in various mounting holes, there is a good bit of play. Over-tightened nuts can cause too much binding friction, stiction. I loosened mine, and used lock-tight on the nuts for safety, and could feel a bit softer ride from the shock. I think the bolts self center in the bearing race they go through. Maybe just push the bolt that has the rubbing dog bone over a bit to get equal clearance on both sides.
pcarnut
Just got home with my new to me '15 FJ. Currently has around 7k miles and has nearly 3/16=1/4" up/down play in swing arm as others have noted. Looks to be from the dogbone llnkage. Checked out a new one on the dealer's floor and it had a very slight amount of play. I find this disconcerting on a nearly new bike. My 2011 Tiger 1050 with 19k miles has zero play. Any changes to those that commented on the earlier? Any dealer involvement yet? SoCal 2015 FJ-09 Red of course
FJ29ER
Thread revival!!!! About 23k. On the clock. Gave my bike a really good wash down and since ive been commuting daily for the last 2 mths decided to give it a little once over. I have always noticed the slight amount of play int he swing arm bushings and wanted to see if it is got worse or not, it did. I peaked inside the right side and noticed the relay arm has a huge gouge in it. The small link arm was digging into the side of the arm. Looking for a used one..it seems they all have rubbing marks from the links. How is this a normal thing????

I just looked over all of the suspension parts, swingarm, relay arm, dog bones etc and don't have any rub marks or gouging. When you say that you have always had play in the swingarm bushings are you talking about the 2 front mounts where the swingarm pivots up and down? ***2015 Candy Red FJ-09***
peteinpa
I've had this slight play on I think every bike I've owned which is mostly Hondas. It's the play between the mounting bolt and the bushing in the shock. Never a problem. Now that rubbing, THAT is a problem. Looks like Yamaha's seemingly too frequent suspension lube and inspection interval is needed.

Seems this should have been my second time servicing these. Bearings are slightly dry but still smooth rolling. Except the one on the swingarm which i feel is too narrow versus how much wider the mount is. Bearing is 15mm..the seals are both 3mm. and the mount is about 30mm. so 9mm of space? Bearing could be wider for more support i feel.
