Hard Starting Randomly

Recommended Posts

I have learned from many years with my FJR and countless posts:  Bike not start on first attempt, twist throttle wide open on second attempt, and bike starts.  Problem goes away until next time, which may be in ten minutes or 2 months or a year later.  Just the way it is with these Yamahas.  Just a reminder here:  Twist throttle wide open on second attempt.
Mine has this problem only once a year luckily. If during the starting process it does not start right away, I twist the throttle mid start and it fires right up. Not a clue why, but it works.
Mine did it once or twice when new ( a year ago ), then didn't do it again till a month ago. Now it has done it 3-4 times lately. Strange, maybe the weather? I doubt it, since it's been warm in SoCal lately... but it was about 50 F last time it did it. Was after a breakfast ride with ULEWZ, so it had sat about a half hour or so. Started up the second attempt with some throttle no problem.

My other bike is carbureted with a finicky choke when half warm, so the FJ's problem doesn't really bother me. But still I wonder what causes it.

I might add, as indicated by Wessie, the bike eventually starts. This is why I say do this on the second try, as you will need to continue with the starter running until it starts, no stopping to analyse why it may not be working. You will need all the power your battery can muster in this process. Good Luck, keep the faith, these are great bikes.

OK Red. Your wish is my command. This thread has had no new info in a while (other than Red's solution) So I am locking it. New issues, new threads.
