Heading out west..

Recommended Posts

Hey everybody ... I would like to hear from people who  have taking long trips out west or if you're lucky enough to live in these beautiful states. I'm heading out from LI NY, we are going to super slab to SD then start exploring. The route I want to do is SD TO  Wyoming then Montana down south to Utah, I plan on staying 2 days in each state. The whole trip is 3 weeks, around 6000 miles. From Utah head east to Colorado, I want to ride Pikes Peek for sure. Then make our way down to New Orleans , get off the bike for a few days relax and enjoy to favors of New Orleans. Then Slab to Georgia making our way to the Smokey Mts to the Blue Ridge. From there we  have to see how much time we have left to explore. I wouldn't mind taking the long way thru West Virginia heading North. So I would like  hear about the must see roads out west, peoples stories about their rides . Thanks...

What time of year are you planning your trip?
Mountainous areas have a lot of snow closures, some roads dont get cleared and open to traffic until late June!
Since you are going to be in MT and WY, a few areas I would recommend are Beartooth Pass, Chief Joseph Hwy and the Bighorn Mountains, which can all be done in one continuous route between Red Lodge, Cody and Sheridan, if the snow has been cleared.

I will be going here with my family end of June. My wife has been there already and claims it is spectacular:

also in Wyoming we will be hitting some hot spring locations that might feel nice after a ss from NY (BTW i grew up in Smithtown :))

Its almost impossible not to find something amazing in the west/ northwest, have a great trip.

Look into going through the Sawtooth National Rec area. A beautiful place. It did snow on us in August (Heavy flurries)

Then on to Craters of the moon. Another place everyone should see.

Utah to Colorado eastbound. I-70 between Salina Ut. to Grand Junction Co. is just amazing drive/ride. Not challenging just beautiful. Looks like a John Ford movie. (Think John Wayne) One of 2 "I"s I have ever recommended. The other is I-26 between Asheville NC. and Johnson City Tn.

Absolutely Do not miss Dead Indian Pass....

Go over to Philsplace.smugmug.com and click on "From Here to the Canadian Border to the Mexican Border and back". I highly recommend a stay at the Laughing Horse Bed and Breakfast in Whitefish MT. Rooms are quaint, and the food to die  for. Sounds like a great ride, enjoy!
