throttle is "pinned" to max revs
texscottyd replied to Rdecae81's topic in Tracer 900 GT Discussions
First, I strongly suggest that you not ride it again until you find the definitive cause of this. That could be a really bad situation… I haven’t heard of this one before, thankfully. I know the earlier FJs had mechanical cables that connected to the electronic throttle controls down by the throttle bodies… sort of a hybrid mechanical ride-by-wire. Does your Tracer have the same setup? My experience has been that sticking throttles are almost always something mechanical getting bound up… check cables, linkages, return springs, etc. -
Nothing sketchy about this method, right? 😀 New Road 5s mounted, and enough of a shakedown ride to make sure the ABS light is out and everything feels good. More ‘testing’ to follow… I got about 6,800 miles out of the Dunlop RS III, and honestly wasn’t really a fan. Glad to have Michelins back on the FJ… (Yes, my ‘shop’ has become ‘overflow storage’ it seems. That’s gotta get corrected…)

Great choice. It’s a massive improvement if you ride the bike with any level of ‘enthusiasm’. You’re going to love it

Thinking of getting a Tracer 900GT
texscottyd replied to Mrtwisty's topic in New Member Introductions
😳 How did you not end up in orbit over The Mountain? -
Welcome @theog- It looks like you’ve been through the full rotation of Yamahas… I hope the FJ is ‘just right’ for you. It’s a really entertaining motorcycle. I’m intrigued by the Ultra Bee. You’re happy with it?

Glad to hear, but I personally hate those odd & unexplainable ‘repairs’ It’s magic! 😀

Sargent seat pan issue
texscottyd replied to texscottyd's topic in FJ-09 Parts and Accessory reviews
I have the stock seat back on for now, and suddenly the riding position feels correct again. I had noticed that the rear of the bike felt low compared to what I remembered, but assumed it was just my imagination since I’ve been swapping back & forth between three bikes almost daily. Now I understand what was going on… 🙄 I generally like the seat (certainly an improvement from stock), but I’m a bit undecided on what to do here. Thanks for the suggestions and experiences… seems to be a known problem for at last some owners. -
Sargent seat pan issue
texscottyd replied to texscottyd's topic in FJ-09 Parts and Accessory reviews
Thanks @Windster! That’s the post I was looking for… I see that I even responded to it when you posted last year. Is that support brace bolt method still holding up for you? -
Hey everyone, I know I’ve seen something about this previously, but can’t seem to find it with a quick search… The rider support pads on the bottom of the seat pan for my Sargent seat have collapsed up into the pan base. I’m not a little guy (225 pounds), but I’m still a bit disappointed/surprised by this. I’ve had the seat for several years, and bought it lightly used, so I understandably don’t expect any warranty action by Sargent. So, any suggestions on repair? I’m pretty sure I can pull the rubber bumpers back out with a pair of pliers, but I’m not sure how to approach repairing/strengthening/stabilizing those perches for ongoing use. Thanks in advance! -Scott

It’s been a year, the Bronx is still in suspended animation, and I surprised even myself by buying an XR1200 anti-Harley. 😀 I saw this PanAmerica-based build, and it made me want to go poke at H-D’s product strategy team yet again: “Damn it, guys, there’s a huge market demand here you’re totally ignoring. We don’t want a Sportster S cartoon bike. Offer us something real…” Maybe someday? I still haven’t given up hope on a Bronx and/or a legit sport-tourer from the PanAmerica platform. Time will tell.

Yeah, that @betoney guy seems kinda sketchy to me… I sometimes wonder if he’s really a 9 year old kid catfishing us all from a frozen village outpost in Siberia. 🤷♂️ I mean, honestly, nobody gets to do that much cool riding…. 😀

Awesome stuff @piotrek! I look forward to seeing the rest of your journey. I’m maybe kinda sorta just a little bit jealous… I’m waaaay overdue for a road trip.

Do not mount Iphones on Motorcycles!
texscottyd replied to maximNikenGT's topic in Yamaha Niken Forum
What’s old is new… Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4: 🙄 I’ve been using a RokForm mount (https://www.rokform.com/collections/motorcycle-mounts) for 5+ years on my FJ, and really like it. It does require their proprietary locking case, but the twist lock plus magnet means the phone isn’t going anywhere. Very similar concept to the quadlock, I believe. My older bar mount doesn’t have any vibration damper built in, although it looks like the current RokForm mounts do offer that. I’ve gone about 25k miles with an iPhone in the mount, and (knock on wood) no sign of camera stabilization damage. Maybe I’ve just been lucky? -
So, uh… I have ‘questions’ here
-
Honestly, that’s EXACTLY the use case to justify spending the money on top-shelf suspension for the FJ/Tracer. Similar to @betoney, I’ll invest in quality suspension on every bike I own. And hands-down, my FJ wins the ‘most transformed by suspension upgrades’ award. If your riding style highlights how marginal the stock stuff is, you're the type that should invest in doing it right. The newer Tracers are better than the early FJs, but still have lots of room for improvement. I went Ohlins/RaceTech, but any good quality aftermarket option will be a great investment.

Goodbye to my 2019 Tracer 900 GT and to the Forum

2019 Yamaha Tracer 900 GT That should take you directly to the listing. Woodlands Premium Motorcycles is a great dealership to work with, and this looks like a solid deal. -

I assume you’re on the north side of Houston? The Yankee Tavern near Anderson is a good lunch spot, and has the added benefit of being right by 3090 for some nice riding. Orsaks in Fayetteville is an old favorite, along with The Hill & Newmans Bakery in Bellville. Royer’s in Round Top is outstanding as well. I’m sure there are 100’s more great little places scattered about… finding them is half the fun. The Kenney Store is just a bit south of Brenham. It’s fun, food is good, and draws a large motorcycle crowd for lunch on nice weekend weather days. Glad the Tiger is working for you. Enjoy! -

I wish you all the best with your new bike, as it sounds like a great choice. And welcome to the Triumph family! They have the ownership experience well sorted. I bought my Speed Twin at Bell County Motorworks in Temple, but am also very familiar with Woodlands Premium… good folks to deal with. You’re right that time is short, so I think I’m going riding today! Lunch at Kenney Store, perhaps? -Scott -
Those actually are the Storz Performance wheels in that photo, so we’re thinking the same thoughts. 😀 About $1,000 less than the Dymags, and the more I look at it, the more I like the look of the wire wheels. Did you do the chain drive conversion on yours? I think I’m perfectly happy with the belt, but would love to hear pros & cons of other options.

Maybe a couple photos of what you’re working with would be helpful? Hard to just guess on what the mounting points might look like… -Scott

I totally understand that, and think that it would have been a tough sell for me to buy the XR as a new bike, and/or as an only bike. There are many more options out there that make so much more sense. I traded my well-sorted Aprilia Mille R for this one, so it’s a big swing away from my hardcore sport bike background. But, I’ve really been enjoying this tractor’s quirky charms. It’s the third bike in my rotation, and probably won’t see more than about 2K miles a year. It seems to have most of the gremlins sorted out, had a lot of expensive upgrades already done, and just seems to suit me. I honestly never thought I would own a Harley, but I’m happy - so far…😀 - that this one crossed my path.
-
Because I’m impulsive and make bad financial decisions, I really want to put 17” wheels on the XR1200. I found this picture of a similar XR on traditional spoked wheels, and I really like it… right in line with the street tracker theme. What are your thoughts? The other options include Dymags ($$$) and BST carbons ($$$$++)

What did you do to your FJ-tracer-gt today?
texscottyd replied to yamaham's topic in FJ-09 Tracer 900 General Discussions
Nah, that’s just the traction release compound… 😀 -
That really is a stellar deal… I’m surprised it hasn’t sold already. Your profile says Alabama, so I assume the bike is there? Best of luck with the sale, and the upcoming life chapters. The Miata should be a blast.
