  1. and here I was thinking I was mildly crazy for planning on continuing to ride in Reno through the winter. Props to you!
  2. as everyone else has already said, oil pan is a big weak point of the bike. one of the lowest points of the bike is the oil drain screw.
  3. always difficult to decide which one to take out (CBR isnt mine). Went with the DR650 yesterday and did a 70 mile off-road loop through the desert and mountains. Decided to take the FJ09 today and flew up to Virginia City
  4. Only 11k miles on my old girl and no complaints.. not sure I'll be able to justify the extra 6k+ in cost to upgrade, no matter how much "better" the GT is. But I'm definitely getting the itch a little bit
  5. Looks like Yamaha had a huge marketing budget for the Tracer 9 GT. First Motorcyclist Magazine and now MotoGeo. Almost making me want to trade in my old 2015.. but not quite yet.
  6. I have Givi sidebags but wound up just packing the backpack. is there something dangerous about strapping the bag down how I did or are you just referring to back issues? It looked/felt pretty secure, I unbuckled the arm straps and had them tightened down and routed through the grab bar, then threw a bungee net over the top. it was an amazing ride. got a bad flat (extreme valve stem leak at the base, and on a sunday none the less) on the way home but a great local shop (Sonora Custom Cycles) took care of me. the owner came in on his day off and got my tire fixed up.
  7. Just got back from a 600 mile, two day ride through Ebbetts and Sonora passes. I had a tire malfunction at the base of the valve stem heading out of Sonora, CA today, caused by overtightening the FOBO2 unit (I assume). Nothing wrong with the product, just thought it was ironic that my newly installed TPMS system caused a tire pressure failure.
  8. just installed the FOBO 2, turns out my pump was reading 3 PSI high (or the FOBO is reading 3psi low, but I'd put money on it being my pump)
  9. getting a TPMS monitor never even crossed my mind until this thread. Just ordered the FOBO on Amazon, arriving tomorrow
  10. hopefully it's not too long of a wait for the T7. let us all know how you like it!
  11. I was in your exact position about 3-4 months ago. I wanted something for dirt (tons of off roading to be done where I live - forests, desert, and anything in between) but never even considered the FJ09 as it isn't the right tool for the job. I put a deposit down on a T7 with an estimated delivery date of late Sept. In the meantime I was checking craigslist every day and wound up finding an absolute steal 2001 DR650 and went to buy it 30 mins after the ad was posted. Some say it's too heavy but, for the situation you seem to be in (not looking to do very technical riding, rather just something to ride off road for fun once in a while and not break the bank if it's dropped) I highly recommend it.
  12. it was an experience for sure, unfortunate circumstances but I'm grateful I got to ride the entire lake with no traffic. South Lake Tahoe and the west shore of Tahoe (where the photos were taken) are now under mandatory evacuation. which one of the passes was your favorite? I'm partial to Sonora but find myself doing Monitor pass at least once a week due to the closer distance.
  13. went to grab breakfast in south lake tahoe with my sister this morning (they live there and just got the order to evacuate about an hour ago). looked like the apocalypse as soon as I crossed over stateline with ash falling from the sky and zero visibility. the silver lining was absolutely no traffic - I haven't seen SLT this empty ever. wound up doing the lake loop and, as soon as I was about 15 mins out of SLT, it completely cleared up. met this guy on the side of the road and we chatted bikes for a bit. hopefully not the last time I get to see south lake tahoe in one piece. I lived there for a winter season once and worked at Kirkwood back when I was 19.
  14. been riding/working on my DR650 and neglecting the old girl lately, so did a little 80 mile loop today to grab some coffee and lunch. it hit 55 degrees on mt rose summit - had to turn on the hand warmers!
  15. that looks like the bolt that goes all the way through the frame. there should be a nut on the end holding that very long screw on. what I did was after getting the other bolt off, I used a long flathead and gently tapped the bolt through the frame with a mallet.
  16. good to see the MT10 love here.. I think my ideal stable consists of my FJ09, an MT10, and a Tenere 700 OR smaller dual sport (DRZ400)
  17. Take it back to Cyclegear and insist they re-balance. I brought my DR650 front wheel in to get changed and they didn't even get the bead seated properly last week.
  18. got caught in a thunderstorm yesterday on monitor pass. also noticed one of my running lights isn't working.. great
  19. Can't go wrong with the Puig touring screen. I just took it off due to the temperatures (100+ daily), but anything under 90 and it's back on
  20. you as well! Very hot (was about 96 riding back down the hill), can't decide whether to pull the windscreen off for now or not. The plus is more airflow, but that's also a downside when it gets that hot because it leads to faster dehydration and the feeling of a hot leafblower the entire ride.
  21. rode down to Carson City through Mound House to NV 341 quick lunch in virginia city, NV
  22. hello, what weight rider is this set up for? thank you!
  23. In my experience, screws are most attracted to brand new tires. Caught a huge screw in downtown San Francisco on my SV650 with a brand new (<150 miles) Road 5. Took 6 gummies to keep it inflated but wound up just swapping it for peace of mind.
