2020 900GT, another seat discussion.

Recommended Posts

I know this has been covered a few times, but things change as times go by. I just purchased a 2020 900GT with 1400 miles on it. I was looking for an upgrade to my 2015 FJ09.

I updated the seat on the FJ with a Terry custom seat. It was an improvement, but I'm looking for a little more. I'll be using the Tracer as a street cruiser. Often, I ride 300 mile rides for a day ride. I'm 6' and 220 lbs

I don't have any experience with the Yamaha comfort seat. Is there much of an inprovement over stock? I have seen a few used ones listed for about $200.00

I looked at the web page for Corbin & Sargent. Both look nice, but you don't really know unless you sit on the seat. They start at about $650.00

Please offer your thoughts, comments and suggestions.

Thanks, David

I am fortunate to live about 2 hours away from a motorcycle seat builder, all of my bikes have had custom seats.  Ride in, get measured and get your seat modified specifically for YOU.  I have tried Sergent and Corbin but NOTHING beats a personally fitted custom seat.

Russell Daylong seat is a good choice.  I have what is basically a copy that was custom made for me.  Best seat I have ever had on a motorcycle.

Don’t forget Joe Kelly’s seat slope modification kit. It worked like magic for me after spending a fortune on a seat rebuild that didn’t work. jk3d.us

I just ordered one of these, price is certainly right, but what's difference between using a kit to prop up the front and just putting seat in high position, which is, uh, raising the front...

High position raises the front and the rear proportionally so the slope to the tank is still there. You should have an insert with 2 positions in the battery area the rear of the seat sits on.

Russel seats "IMHO" are FUGLY and belong on a Wing or a cruiser, but yeah I hear they are very comfy.

Yes, they are not visually appealing at all.  Reminds me of an old catcher's mitt in a way.   But function over form.......performance over pretty.  I spend exponentially more time sitting on my bike, riding down the road than looking at it.  I will gladly sacrifice looks for proper comfort.

In fact, I don't find my 2019 GT to be an attractive looking bike at all, but it hits all the right notes when riding.

You can't see it when you are sitting on it! Russell has a sport option that is not quite as wide, but if you are going to spend big bucks on a Russell seat, why not get the more comfortable version?

I have a Russell sport seat on my '99 VFR800.  A little flatter or "less pocket" than the original.  Not a lot narrower, but maybe a bit.  I've had a couple of Russell's, and next one would be a sport version.......... with a proper seat, your fatigue level will go way down after an all day ride or several days in a row.  Worth it!
