Wind noise

No pictures, but I briefly tried a wind deflector on the side of the stock screen. It fit OK. If you had two...

Something like these:

That's a novel approach, sunny!   Might also help brider225's approach as on his post of half an hour ago...

Thanks for posting that picture Wordsmith. I have been thinking that I will have to make something along those lines and that looks like a good idea to start with. Was hoping that someone has already figured it out and came up with a design to save me some time experimenting with different shapes.
Guess I will have to pick up some Lexan and starting cutting and shaping.
Naturally enough, I've been pondering this approach for the past day or so!   It would, as I said earlier, be easy enough to secure a dummy/ mock-up reflector to the bike with duct or double-sided tape (or similar to see how/ if it works), but then how to attach a permanent solution along those lines seems trickier.
I could stand drilling a couple of small holes to take screws through the outboard edge of the black plastic under-screen support, then through the deflector, but I'm not sure then how to secure the deflector along the upper edge of the painted headlight fairing, which is 'too nice' to drill!   Maybe there, in conjunction with the two screws as described taking the bulk of the wind-generated pressures, some industrial-strength double-sided tape under the rear edge of the fairing might suffice, and be neatly hidden.

But on further reflection if you used thick/ rigid enough Lexan the screws alone might be sufficient to hold the part securely and vibe-free, making secondary attachment to the fairing unnecessary - just tuck it in behind.

But maybe better still, see also suncoaster's thoughts for a ready-made deflector.

Please keep us posted on your efforts and outcomes.

Not bad...  It actually gives me another idea.... instead of buying the clamp assembly set-up I might just bolt different shapes of plastic to a spare screen and see what works.
Then make a whole new screen from there
Thanks.!
Plenty of time on my hands while Mrs Wordsmith is away, so I continued the project and cut out a shape from paper and attached it with some tape. It needs the lower corners to be tidied-up, but will do as an illustration.

The first pic has the part bowed outwards in sort-of double-bubble shape, while the second pic has it bowed inwards: they look the same, but trust me!   My gut-feeling is that with it bowed outwards it will deflect more air.   I also figured that the curved upper edge would give a nicer-looking appearance than a straight edge, and visually it also picks-up the curve of the screen.   But more importantly it might lead to better and smoother air-flow, since that's what you are after - it may or may not work.

I have no Lucite to hand, but found a couple of scraps of thin aluminium sheet, so later on I may cut something out of that and face it up on both sides with some carbon-look vinyl.

The dome (acorn) heads are dummied-up here just for effect, but if proceeding I'd use them (of the correct size!) and paint them black.

I'm not really sure why I'm doing this as I'm not bothered by noise or buffetting - but why not!

I like the look of that... Thanks for the mock-up Wordsmith!
It's better than what I had a picture of in my head. The convex shape is not something that if it works, looks like a cool accent.
With that in mind, I may try to made something out of aluminum instead of Lexan and go from there.
Just to check myself, I went out on another ride tonight using a different helmet, a Shoei Qwest, just to see if it made a difference. Alas, while there was a slight improvement it is mininmal....
I want to resolve this issue of mine because other then the wind roar, this bike is a blast to ride.

I made up a piece today from scrap 0.5mm aluminium plate to install as demonstrated in the paper mock-up above, facing it up with some faux carbon-fibre vinyl I had.

It was fastened to the windscreen mounting plate at one point only, as the slight bend induced seemed to hold it securely in-place.   If not, a couple of short lengths of double-sided tape strategically placed along the lower edge would surely do so.   The small screw-head would be painted matte black if I continue.   Getting the compound curve into the piece as planned made installing it a little difficult and time-consuming, so I didn't persist.

I think it looks fine, but how effective it might be is for others to discover, as I don't plan to make the piece for the other side, although I did cut out the aluminium, which I'll keep in reserve just in case.

Pix below, including some dimensions and angles for those who may wish to follow.   Please keep us informed!

Im curious to hear if putting a "beak" on changes the wind noise...
One assumes you mean putting a beak on the bike, not on yourself! :D    It's a good question...

I liked wordsmith's idea and have fabbed up a couple out of light flashing, held in place with double-sided tape.

I have no idea if the material OR the tape are up to the job, and it's raining now and supposed to rain all day tomorrow, so it'll be a bit before I can road-test the concept. I do like the look tho.

Complete luck-of-the-draw that I happened to have a piece of silver flashing laying around that matches color pretty well.  I've got some adhesive faux carbon fiber sheet on order.  If this idea works, I'll cover them with that and attach them more permanently.

Agree - I've had PUIG rear huggers on earlier BMWs, to good effect.   But at AUD$161 this is pretty expensive, AND yet another of those items that aren't shipped to Oz!

Yamaha should be paying us for doing R&D for em on how the majority of us fine tune the FJ-09 ?
C'mon!   They don't even outlay on their own R&D - witness crap seat, suspension, screen!
