Brian V Paigo
As the tittle states. I sold my 17 FZ and bought a 17 FJ. I loved the FZ and the bikes are too different animals. I travel at about 75 mph around here, and the weather protection and comfort just isn't there on the FZ. I thought about spending money on the FZ and upgrade it to make it a more sport touring bike, but a dealer was trying to get rid of their 17 FJ and they really, really, really, wanted my FZ. So I went up and got a deal that was truly worth it. vs spending the money on the FZ. The FJ is taking some time to get used to, but it works alot better for a DD. Also it cruises at about 3K RPM at 60mph vs 6K with the FZ. I liked being close/tight on the FZ, but I love the tallest of the FJ. It's like mixing my CRF250L and the Goldwing together, and I love it. Maybe one day ill own anther FZ or sport bike, but I was not expecting to fall in love with the FZ and it's triple. Before I knew it, the FZ became my DD, and it just wasn't working. The last pic is the FZ I traded. It was a 17 with 1,800 miles on it and I had it for 6 months. I also own a 2006 Goldwing ABS, 2014 CRF250L, and a CB300F. Looking forward to meeting ya'll!!
wordsmith
Also it cruises at about 3K RPM at 60mph vs 6K with the FZ. Strange, this! My three (3) FJs (MT-09s here) cruised at almost exactly 4000rpm @ 60mph (100kph here, the default highway limit in most places). I always thought that was far too high for a supposed sport-TOURING machine. Whatever - a good deal for you: enjoy it. My three (3) FJs (MT-09s here) cruised at almost exactly 4000rpm @ 60mph +1 Those numbers seemed off to me as well. Does the FZ really rev that high with stock gearing at 60mph? I am geared lower (-1 tooth up front) and dont hit 6k until around 80mph. ***2015 Candy Red FJ-09***
Brian V Paigo
Yes it does. It's night and day. Maybe more like 65mph, but it hits 6K pretty quick in 6th gear. However, I could reach 87 mph in 2nd gear, so it was built to go fast, lol. The only issue I have with the FJ is at about 3500-4500 RPM in 6th gear, the FJ has this annoying, ear piercing whine, and it goes away if I go to 65mph or drop to 5th. I know it's not my FJ because I remember that noise on the FZ, but it was always cruising at about 5-6K RPMs, so it wasn't as noticeable. 6K is a good rpm for these motors. Update: my correction, it’s 65 mph at 4K rpm, and 45mph at 3k rpm for the FJ.

koth442
Welcome to the dark side! Windscreen might get rid of that noise. The touring shields by CalSci are pretty awesome! '15 FJ09

Some noise at lower rpm in 6th will always be there, as you’ve discovered simply shifting to 5th changes the sound. I set my tension so I have roughly 5-10mm freeplay with my weight in the bike. YMMV, -Skip

The bike actually gets better MPG's dropping to 5th at that speed, and I generally don't drop into 6th gear until 70+ to avoid hearing the whine.... I love that it has so much power in 5th too, no need to drop a gear to pass just crank it!
leonardlloyd
How do you like footpeg differrences? I am considering FZ-9 rubber surface pegs on my FJ-09. At only 4100 miles metal peg surface chewed hole in my left boot instep.
dedsxy47
Changed mine for the same reason, plus it is easier to stand up and ride adventure style on the rubber pegs without slipping. I have never regretted changing them, go for it.

Technically I live in Oregon, but I'm traveling quite a bit for work right now; currently in PA. Sadly my FJ has spent most of this year in the garage on a battery tender thus far. Brian V Paigo
That sucks. There's nothing worse than having a bike and not being able to rid it. It's like when rainy season is here, and all I want to do is ride.
