Building an above the Instruments GPS mount Tracer GT...

I have been riding for the last three days with the prototype setup.  All is good and movement and vibration is minimal.   The movement is in the entire rubber-mounted windshield assembly, not the GPS mount.

Latest version of the GPS mount as seen through the windshield.  This is mounted to a Zumo 550 cradle.  The mount has standard AMPs bolt pattern, so it will mate with most every GPS cradle or mounting system out there.  Set up for a cross bar that is 12mm or .5 inch.  Pretty standard cross bar size.  Same as the GPS mount on my Givi mount on the VStrom, windshield frame on the Africa Twin, windshield stay on the GS and many others.   Final tweaks being made, bolts being procured, etc.

i enjoy finding solutions to problems that don't exist - this is a case in point!   There is a steel (I assume) rod that passes horizontally though the front of the screen-raising lock-lever (as the Manual calls it), secured at each end by a circlip.   I don't imagine it's secured in any way inside the lock-lever, acting purely as a spindle or axle (again I assume).

I wonder if this could be replaced by a rod threaded at each end, protruding a little from the body of the lock-lever, to which might be bolted a  vertical bracket of some sort to form the basis of a mount for a GPS?

Yep I looked at doing that and various other ways to utilise the screen mounting, but l realised they would not be robust enough to stop the gps vibrating, I also wanted it look like it was meant to be there.

I manufactured a stainless steel bracket with a ram mount ball on it that bolts to the main structure at the front of the bike and replaces the original Yamaha bracket, it’s hidden once all the trim is replaced.

To get the gps where I wanted  it just above the display meant I had to do away with the adjustable screen clamp.

To sort that out I fitted thicker orings in the sliders for the screen mount so screen now adjusts by just pulling it up or pushing it down. It’s quite stiff and does not move on it’s own.. But to be honest I never saw the need to move it anyway once I found the right position

The big problem I did find is the TFT display interferes with the gps and causes it to lose its satellite signal, I had wrap the TFT display to filter out the RF interference.

I did a post on this in the GT section.

My solution.
I wanted to do:
1) The most light weight of fastening.
2) Easily removable mount, with minimal modifications to the motorcycle
3) It made it possible to quickly and conveniently remove the radar detector
4) Reliable, not ugly)
5) Save the ability to adjust the position of the glass

The result is completely satisfied. Remaining change the screws to stainless steel.

EDIT:  Scrub all what I asked, I was reading through the posts and asked a question that you have since answered.

Hi,

Did you ever get this tested and working as desired? Wondered if you were gonna be / or are selling them?

This holder can be installed with any windshield. Very easy to fit! | eBay!

Mine is a 2015 FJ09. Don't think it fits the new Tracer or Tracer GT. This has worked well for me over the last year.

I got one, too.  It's worth the wait.  It's heavier than you might think, but that just lends itself to 'solid'.  It's soooo nice to be able to glance down but not too far down, eg handlebars.  Plus I found the handlbar x-grip obscured the dash a bit.  Much cleaner setup now.

That mount you designed, @motopumps - impressive!!  You're really on to something there, great work.
