Yes, both bikes have funky looking/angled side bags, not a fan of either.

I had the Kawi bags on my Ninja 1000 and they are very functional - certainly hold more than the Yamaha City bags do.

I actually don't mind the look of the new Tracer 9 bags. They do look like they are just hanging out there though. Yamaha mentions something about a new "free floating" rack system. Maybe something similar to the way the Triumph Sprint bags move side-to-side when the bike leans.

There is nothing listed on the Yamaha website showing a base Tracer anymore.

No, but at the end of the Yamaha promo video it says "Tracer 9 & Tracer 9 GT" - and I think the red bike in the video has black forks. I'd have to watch it again to confirm.

  3. I admit, I am struggling with that dash though.

Instead of one solid area to keep clean - there are now 4. Ugh.

I can't quite tell, but it appears to be a large bolt head smack dab in the middle between the 2 screens. You know, right where your eyes will look when you look down.  :-/

The front geometry changes also concern me a bit, looks like they made it a bit lazier with more rake and trail.

Rake is now 25 degrees as opposed to 24 degrees on the 2020.

Trail is 108mm vs 100mm on the 2020.

Overall wheelbase is the same at 59.1".

I honestly don't know much about the mathematics and how it translates to real world handling/performance.

Are the increases above substantial enough to be "felt"?

  5. So it looks like from the photos on the Yamaha site, that when the bike is running, the top lights have some LED strips and only the one bottom "headlight" is lit. Assuming that the other side will light up with hi beams activated? That seems so odd to me that you have all that potential for lighting and still only use so little of it in running mode.

Edit: looks like the upper lights act as the cornering lights.

And the dash - that its a nightmare. Just a tad larger of what the 19/20 GT models had would have been fine.

Do not like the red at all. It hi-lights that giant front fairing. Not a fan of the blurple wheels, but would have to opt for the silver.

    Hmm...lots to think about.

No, the black and red/orange 2020 has metallic paint on the tank.

Hmm...that's odd. I haven't seen one in person,  but from all the pictures and comments on here, I assumed it was satin/matte. It sure doesn't look like it has a clear coat finish.

    Glad to see you're back!

That paint looks awesome; so sparkly!  I like the metallic black (it's on the 2020 Tracer as well) but those blue stripes!

Is the white all pearly as well?  I loved that pearl white so much on my 2018 MT07.

Did you mean the 2019 black & blue Tracer has the black metallic paint? I thought the 2020 black (with red) had the satin/matte finish.

@wordsmith I'm glad to see you are back with is full time🙂The paint on the SP tank sure puts the GT to shame. Looking forward to seeing what you do to her in the future, Enjoy👍

I agree about the finish on the SP above - wow!

Shouldn't this be how all vehicles that cost what bikes do nowadays are painted/finished? Having to pay premium on top of already expensive vehicles seems silly. But of course, I would. 🙂

  9. Hi all

Well, I did a really dumb thing.

After my 2019 GT was written-off, I gave the insurance company both sets of keys as they requested.

No big deal right? Wrong. When the bike went down, the City side cases weren't on it. Bonus, right? Wrong.

Pretty hard to use these bags without the key. 😕

I do still have the keycode tag from my bike. Not sure if I can have a key made through Yamaha  or if I can remove the lock cylinders or what...

I obviously wasn't thinking straight at the time, would like to either use these or sell them at some point.

    Thoughts?

    Additional ridicule expected. 😉

correctomundo.  I owned an FJR when I bought the Tracer GT.  The bags from one to another fit perfectly.  The FJR removeable bags wouldn't fit inside the Tracer cases, however.  They were too fat.

I have the FJR inner bags that I use with my City cases. They work - you have to work a bit to get them tucked in - but it's better than nothing. Yamaha sells them as bag liners for the Tracer.

  11. So - no love for the Tracer from Yamaha today. They announced the MT-09 SP with the following upgrades:

    KEY FEATURES
    Exclusive SP-specific Features
    • Dedicated R1M-inspired colours
    • Cruise control system
    • Premium KYB front suspension package (fully adjustable)
    • Öhlins rear shock absorber (fully adjustable)
    • Double-stitched seat
    • Anodized brushed aluminium swingarm
    • Anodized black levers, handlebars and black rear sprocket
    • Clear-smoked front and rear brake fluid reservoirs

    Fancy.

  12. I'm hoping we get some news this week about the 2021 bike.

I was at my dealer on Saturday and he said when they announced the 2021 MT-09 he got an email from Yamaha Canada about an hour before it went "live" on their website.

Pretty clever of them to announce a new line one at a time - drives more people to their site and socials etc.

I really don't like the front end around the air intakes, not even a little bit.

These are weird photos - taken at some weird angles. I'm guessing whoever took them was doing so without trying to be obvious that they were. I kind of like the Transformer look - but to be honest I will need to see proper photos (hopefully coming soon) or even better - see it in person before I can say for sure.

Kawasaki just announced that they’re selling off their entire motorcycle business, so I’m hoping Yamaha’s upcoming press releases are a bit less dramatic.

    What!?!? Wow. That's incredible.

Here I was just hoping for a new Tracer announcement.

I think I’m going for the old one at a big discount. If it had looked like the 700 it would’ve been a tougher decision.

It's also interesting to note the potential name change - Tracer 9 GT as opposed to Tracer 900 GT.

Maybe they wanted to get away from the "G00" GT moniker. I mean, they could have just changed the font or made the zeroes the same size as the nine. 😆

I think it’s because they went to a radial master cyl.   Those dont generally have integral reservoirs.   I do like the plastic ones actually,  makes it easier to fill and check the level :)

    Very dirt bike-esque.

Can probably replace it with a tinted one or cover it with one of those reservoir socks.

    Or get used to it.

Where'd you see those photos is there a write-up that's the first I've seen it out in the wild?

That's what I've been asking on FB - these look like an amateur took them - terrible angles. But real roads with leaves down, so interesting to know the source.

I think I need to see it in person - or at least some nice proper marketing photos on the Yamaha site.

Those look like Multistrada bags. Excited about those!

And I just finished saying I'd like a grey or silver option! But I don't want "blurple" wheels". Bah!

From the front, I'm not really sure what I am looking at!

And why oh why did they switch the front brake reservoir to a cheap looking plastic cup. Let me guess - weight savings? Ugh.

  18. Long story - but  a racer boy in a lowered VW Golf decided to play slot car racer and hit me from behind. Sent the bike down the road about 50 feet (I think it flipped at least once) and I slid about 30-40 feet. All the gear, all the time saved me for sure. No real injuries other than a sore shoulder where I landed on it before sliding.

As for the risk associated with a new model - I'm fine with it. I always buy extended warranty when buying new anyways.

For me, it will be does it float my boat like my 2019 did enough to justify the difference in price.

  19. I would also be in this camp if my 2019 GT hadn't been written off last month. Suffice to say I am in the market for a new Tracer. I can replace my '19 with the exact same bike (colour & all), get a 2020 or wait for the 2021.

I'm currently leaning towards the latter as long as I can get with the looks of it. The new updates wouldn't have been enough to tempt me to part with my old bike, but since that's no longer in the picture I'm thinking they might be worth it.  I'm guessing it will be offered in at least the red we saw in the spy shots - but not sure if that was the GT model or not. I would love a silver or grey - but my guess would be Yamaha will give us some bizarre colour combos.

Will also be curious what MSRP will be as with a brand new model, there won't be any discounts etc. like on new old stock.
