The new Tracer is growing on me, especially in the grey where the transition between all the various panels is less obvious.    I’m keeping my FJ for now, but the new bike seems like a nice step forward.

It's growing on me too. So much so that I might put a deposit down on one soon.

The one thing I need to find out, is what the gearing on the new bike is. I read in one of the many articles something about the gearing being tweaked. The gearing on my 2019 GT was perfect for me. I hope they didn't shorten the gearing to make it more "sport-oriented" as that's one of the big reasons I didn't buy another Ninja 1000SX - always searching for 7th gear was a real drag.

I'm going to do some digging on this, but if anyone else finds anything - please drop it in this thread!

Edit: found this - "Also, the ratios for 1st and 2nd gears are incrementally higher than in the older inline-3’s transmission" and this " first and second gear ratios have been revised to match the increase in torque at lower engine RPM with smoother gear changes courtesy of a redesigned shift fork."

    Sounds positive, right?

I didn't know some of those bikes there are used, you can't really tell, they didn't have signs on any of them.

I think he meant that the 3-4 year old bikes are new, old stock - meaning they haven't been able to sell them. Might have something to do with why they are going out of business. I haven't heard great things about Ready Powersports - I tried calling them once about a bike and they weren't very helpful. Didn't they start out as a Honda car dealership?

46L aluminum GIVI top case and factory side bags. No issues here, though I do run a better rear shock to handle it all.

Isn't it more to do with the rear subframe not being rated for the additional weight of all 3 bags loaded up?

To the point where on the new 2021 Tracer 9, they actually mention that the new frame is designed to handle the extra load now?

I'm sure it was mostly a CYA thing on the previous models as most people seem to be running 3 bags with no issue, but I'm sure I have seen some posts where people have had rear subframe cracks/failure.

Totally agree with you.  At first I really didn't like the look but seeing more and better photos and videos it has grown on me.    If I were looking to buy a bike today would defiantly wait until March or April but I like my 2020 and it was $3,000 less than the new one.  I was planning on riding till it wore out but may put 30,000 miles on it and then trade for a new model in 3 years.

This is a sound strategy and is what I would have done as well.

Same here, the silver kind of reminds me of my past 2006 Liquid Silver FZ1.

Hey @betoney - have you ever read "132 Days: A Journey, A Journal and Some Whiskey"?

It's about a guy who rides across America (well, parts of it) on a silver 2003 FZ1 - dubbed the Grey Goose. It's a pretty entertaining read - very thorough and detailed. I picked it up on Amazon for less than $20.

  6. Sorry to drag us back on topic!

So, the more and more that I look at the new GT - the more I like it. To the point where I can't see myself purchasing a 2019 or 2020 model. I know that's an unpopular opinion for sure, but I just happen to find myself in the situation where I am in the market for a bike. If I still had my 2019, I'm not so sure I'd be as tempted away, but alas that is not the case.

I love the silver and black version, but just need to get my head around those blue wheels.

IMHO the new F900XR doesn't impress me at all, the GT would eat it alive in so many categories.

For a bike of that spec and price point, the fact that the front suspension isn't adjustable is just ridiculous.

  8. I guess the next thing in the process, now that the bike has been officially announced by Yamaha is for the official press launch/ride whereby all the publications and VLoggers (they seem to be getting invited to these things now too) will release their articles and videos. Not how impartial any of those are - but they're fun to read/watch.

Or maybe with Covid - they won't be doing that this time around.

I saw 30+ photos someone posted on a Tracer Facebook group and I gotta say the look of the bike is growing on me.  Concerning though is one photo of the fuel gauge, which similar to current models had the 1/2 to full portion as a single segment.   Hopefully the current method of suddenly plunging from showing full to 1/2 won't continue.

Yeah - that was Miguel or Critical Rider (I borrowed his picture of the key position up above). He lives in Holland and that's where Yamaha Europe has their HQ so one of the dealers there ha a couple "pre-prod" bikes on display.

For those of you that are on FB - lookup Critical Rider and you'll see his post/snaps. He took some good, close up ones.

The color schemes alone are enough to make me keep my bike. Blue wheels? What idiot thought that was a good idea?

The "blurple" wheels have been around for awhile. I think the 2017 or 2018 FJ-09 had a similar colour scheme - silver with blue wheels (at least here in Canada).

And agreed - as much as I like the silver 2021 - not sure I can get with the blue wheels.

What I'm not seeing is the front turn signals on as DRLs.  Is that still required in the US? If so we may be getting pumpkins again.

The "top" set of headlights have LED strips that are always on - I think these are considered the new DRT.

This is a weird way to mount a oxygen sensor. The wires are pretty exposed, don't you think?

Yeah - that looks hap-hazard. And to just slap a cable-tie on it and strap it to the rad hose seems rather chincy.

It's odd - some things about this bike seem well thought out and some seem like they were rushing to get it to market.

It doesn't, that's just an optical illusion due to the angle... go look at the head-on pics... the shield covers it.

    You're right @mellow

I guess I am just used to a dash being tucked inside/behind the front fairing - I don't want to see it from the front of the bike at all. But that's just my aesthetic. I've owned too many traditional sport touring bikes I guess. 😉

  14. On the topic of bike sales etc., when I was at my dealership (I'm in Ontario, Canada) the other week the sales manager told me that street bike sales have been way down. The sales of ATVs and dirt bikes have really taken off. Kind of lines up with what others have said above in regards to snowmobiles and PWCs.

Yes, that is significant for those with a shorter inseam, I would be interested to see how the rider triangle, specifically the seat to peg distance has changed with the new frame, I wouldn't want the ergonomics to be any more cramped or compact.

Seat height makes little difference to me, I have a custom thicker seat and can only touch my toes with both feet but never put both feet down at the same time.

The rider pegs are height adjustable on the 9 GT (two positions).

Primer grey (gray) - aka Shipping Container Grey, or Municipal Garbage Collection Truck Primer/ Undercoat Grey - was the earliest colour (or lack-of) on the first Tracers out of the factory way back...

Yamaha is calling it "Camo" - it actually has a hint of green if you look closely.

These were taken at a dealership in Holland - the location of Yamaha Europe HQ.
