Apparently I had my notifications disabled (doh!).

Down for a meetup when COVID things start to improve again. I'm not riding too far from home for the next month; just trying to be conscious of the situation.

Happy to try to organize something around June.

I find that after a certain amount of time of inactivity the notifications time out and stop sending.

Agree about the wait and see approach. Wouldn't want to find myself needing a hospital bed right now for a broken bone. Saw the story of the guy in the GTA who was re-directed to an Ottawa hospital as there was no room for him in Toronto.

Couldn't ride now if I wanted to anyways - bike still hasn't arrived from Japan!

  2. Since the bike is hardly at any dealerships yet, the available aftermarket bits and bobs for the new model aren't likely going to be showing as available yet - even manufacturers like Pazzo or EvoTech etc. won't know for sure if the new part will be the same fitment as the old.

  3. I worked in motorcycle sales briefly for a buddy who owned a Yamaha dealership when I was between IT gigs.

Since it is my passion, I thought it would be something worth trying out. Umm...no.

The majority of folks that came through the door seemed to know very little about bikes in general or what they wanted. Which I get is part of the job - helping them understand things and guide them in the right direction. Turns out I didn't have the patience for that - BUT I treated everyone with courtesy and tried to help them as best I could. The 600+ lb couple looking at the little 250cc cruiser and asking if that would be a good bike for them was a hi-light of my experience. 😉

I guess that's why when I walk into a dealership having done my research and knowing pretty much exactly what I want and then am willing to drop $$$ on a bike, I expect to at least not be treated as a nuisance. The dealership that I bought my 2019 GT from and my 2021 Tracer 9 GT from are great to deal with. They only sell Yamaha's and have a string relationship (as far as I can tell) with Yamaha Canada. But some of the larger, multi-line dealerships that are actually closer to where I live are so awful to deal with that I will make the trip to a dealership that appreciates my business.

From my vantage point, it's Yamaha itself that is the source of lack of communication to the dealerships. Heck, we knew as much about the new T9 launch as my salesman did.

    Anyways...sorry for the off-topic spiel...

ran into the same when purchasing the Tenere 700.  it could be Yamaha NA as you have stated.

Yeah - considering that we are purchasing relatively expensive machinery, you think you could get better treatment.

I can buy a $5 light bulb from Amazon and know it's whereabouts every step of the way until it lands on my door...

Yeah - that sucks. As of 2 weeks ago my dealership hadn't heard anything yet from Yamaha Canada yet either.

It definitely seems that Yamaha Europe (EU) treats it's customers differently that Yamaha in North America. Folks on the Tracer FB pages in Europe were getting letters from Yamaha apologizing for the delay in their delivery times - some even citing the Suez Canal for the reason in delay (not that this would impact deliveries to NA).  These folks actually have delivery dates!

Bikes have starting showing up at dealerships in Greece, Romania and Spain (so far).

    Keep the faith!

When they were taking the box frame off after unboxing the  2021 Tracer above, I was sitting on the edge of my seat thinking they are going to scratch that bike. 🤨

    Oh me too.

Even when he was tightening the triple clamp with the torque wrench.

I wouldn't want to watch them un-crate and prep my bike. They wouldn't want me there.

    Story time!

I had a old Mazda B2200 pickup, with mediocre all seasons.  I lived in Vancouver, British Columbia, where it almost never snows and if it does, it doesn't stick, so it'd never really been a problem - in fact, I never saw a point in winter tires until I moved to this frigid wasteland.

I'd gone to a motorcycle show in Abbotsford with my wife, and it was held at an airport.  This airport was at the end of a very long, moderately steep hill.  While we were at the show, it started snowing, heavily.  We got to the hill, and it was immediately apparent that the truck was simply not going to make it up the hill.  No weight on the light truck's rear end, kind of crappy tires, icy snowy slope.

My wife wasn't experienced at all in driving in the snow and didn't want to do it for fear or crashing, so I had to ask her to get into the bed of the truck, over the axle, because I needed weight in the back.

There is no way to have that conversation where you come out looking good.

And no way you were going to miss the motorcycle show! Lol

Yea, I'm wondering what it will be like trying to take a trip this summer.  I want to do a long trip but wonder if there aren't a lot of folks who have been cooped up and want to go on an adventure.  I usually tent camp at KOAs and outside of holiday weekends there aren't that many folks who want to sleep in a tent - my wife refuses so I go with all my best buds - that would me me me and me!  I think a couple of years from now there will be a better used bike market but hard to say how the post pandemic world will look.  Folks have had time to get out of the rat race and sit at home and think folks will not be as crazy busy as before but will want to have more time to relax.  Will be a lot of folks who know working from home works and will not want to do the commute thing.  Once companies realize they can have less office space and happier employees then working from home will be more common.  My former co-workers have not worked in the office for over a year and don't expect to be back in the office till mid year at the earliest.

I fall into the remote working for over a year now category (I manage an IT team) and it has worked really well - especially as my team is made up of mostly introverts who love being able to work while not being pestered by people standing at their desks.

As for trips - I have no idea what it will look like this summer. We usually ride from Ontario into PA and NY state - but likely still out of the question this year - certainly not with the current border situation.

Hoping to get out for a few overnighters in June once I have the new T9 broken in, but we'll see. Once it arrives of course!

Just got my son a used bike. Around here the used bike market is crazy high right now. Darn tax returns and stimulus checks. I was patient and found a decent deal though.

    What did you get him?

So wierd.  Hell, the 2020's weren't even out yet (Nov 2019) when I got my 2019 GT for 12k Canadian.  Makes me feel like I got a screaming good deal.

How is the new bike market in Calgary? I find it very unforgiving here in SW Ontario. Especially anywhere near the Greater Toronto Area.

I was out Saturday and stopped by a dealer.  They still had a 2020 Tracer GT and had it marked full price, had a used Tracer 900 and a FJ09 as well.  Think they would have come down but apparently not much.  Not sure what their plans for the 2021s are.

It is perplexing - my local dealer is the same way. Still has 2019 non-GT, 2019 GT and 2020 GT. There are some discounts but nothing major - certainly not enough to dissuade me from ordering a 2021.

Same as me. Let's hope you'll get it sooner! So far it's April for Sweden according yamaha. But very uncertain times now. And on top of that we have a damn ship grounding in the canal too 🙄

I saw that...still causing a massive backlog of container ships in the Suez Canal. Would stuff bound for Europe coming from Japan take that route? More-than-likely. 😞

No interest at all (!) but at list I’ve noticed couple on FJ09 in Belfountain around 1.30-2 o’clock. And ... had to enjoy company of BMW GS guys image.thumb.jpeg.91d7419bfca687b65debe4832f6e6597.jpeg

I saw your post in one of the Tracer FB groups yesterday. Did you get to stop for a coffee/cookie at The Hockley General Store? 🙂

    Cheers,

If I've ridden in the rain and the bike really gets filthy, I'll then pre-wet with a light garden hose spray, then carefully apply auto wash soap in a hand spray bottle, use a hand mitt rinsed in a clean water bucket, then dipped in a soap and water bucket, then lightly hose rinse, and chamois hand dry and a carefully use a blower. I otherwise use my "spot cleaning" techniques.   Due to our less than forgiving locale using a garden hose is not always practical or comfortable in cold weather, so I resort to spot cleaning.  In all cases I then follow up with hand and spray applied protective treatment to accessible surfaces.

And all my bikes still look near new as a result.

What's your go-to "protective treatment"? Wax? ACF50? Ceramic coating?

  15. This is a subject that I think about all the time.

It may very well be another "what oil do you use" or "what tires are best" type of thing as it seems there are 2 camps.

Folks who spray cleaner or foam all over their bike and then power wash/rinse it off and then air or blow dry it. The fact that you don't end up scrubbing and rubbing dirt into the paint or clear coat is a bonus. The fact that water can get into crevices that you will never see or be able to dry with a cloth or blower is a bad thing as far as I am concerned. I know bike mechanics who say the same thing.

But to be honest, I may try the spray method this season as I am tired of how thin and delicate the finishes on modern vehicles are and how easily they scratch/marr.

@Waldo Jeffers - what did you use to rinse your bike off after using the S100?

What are others using? I've seen battery powered "power" washers - which are much lower powered (~300psi) than standard electrical washers. Something like this:

Would be interested to hear others thoughts on cleaning their bikes?

And please no "I don't waste time cleaning my bike - I just ride it" comments. This is a thread on cleaning bikes and we admire your approach - but some of us have OCD that needs satiating! 😉

    Cheers,

    Rob
