FJ-09 flash is ready! *Updated*

Recommended Posts

happy01 - I'm after more info on the quickshifter part of the remap. Which sensor and loom do we need ?

bobaintstoppin - Question for Nels. I'm interested in the speedo correction logic. In the old days of mechanical speedos, each bike
would be different. Given the new tech electronic senders, and
digital readout, are we now confident that all Fj bikes have the same
speedo error? This would allow you to make a single fix, obviously.
Can you please elaborate on this a bit?

No two types of bikes are the same. Speed calibration will be vehicle specific. Sometimes an ECU flash will fix the problem. Sometimes a speedo healer will be the best option.

frogwater - Does the re- mapping do anything about the vibration that starts at 4800 rpm?

Yes, we have full custom fuel, timing and throttle maps. Im confident your bike will run smooth as butter.

cthruu - Nels- I've read that some places have been able to add cruise control features to their ecu flash (ie- tuneboys with their
ducati flashes) and was wondering if anything like this would/could be
added. I would love that.

Cruise control is on the schedule but not available at this time. Possibly next winter.

I can confirm the "smooth as butter" map. Been commuting for a couple days since the flash. Stop and go Seattle traffic is still crap, but the bike handles on/off throttle transitions way better. As for the vibration at 4800; i didn't notice anything before really. I have been trying all sorts of rpms and acceleration situations to play with the new programming. No problems to report.

Nels just finished with mine and I can't believe how smooth it is, especially the on/off throttle transition that was so bad in "A" and "STD" modes. Unfortunately I've only ridden a short distance from his shop to my work, but the difference was VERY noticeable and I can't wait to get some riding in!

Did I read somewhere top end is now 160?!??!  Verification?  Be safe.

Yeah we did a top speed run with my bike on Tuesday. It runs out of gear and revs at 160mph. Though i bet the wobble would halt your advance before the rev limiter did
Yes, I was still accelerating at an indicated 134mph when I backed off. I had a top box on the back and it wasn't a speed I felt too comfortable at on the bike.
Short blasts up to 120 to get past a line of traffic is easily achieved and feels okay as long as the road isn't bumpy. Hit a bump at that speed and the head shakes a bit.

Is the European Tracer ecu the same as the U.S. FJ-09 ecu? Will the flash operate in the same way?
I had an email exchange with Nels today. I'm in the UK and cleaning up the low rev fuelling would be something I'm interested in.
He wants to have a European ECU to bench test as he does not know exactly how they are set up in the factory. We know the speed restrictor is not the same and maybe they differ from one country to another, as the French have a bhp limiter for example.

He is happy to do a mail order service for European owners. A typical courier charge would add $45 to the price, plus the cost you would have to send it to him in the first place. This makes the job a $450 one, not $350.

If anyone is willing to be a guinea pig for the Euro ECU maps then Nels may be willing to come to some sort of arrangement, as he did with the rider who visited his workshop to do the US maps. Of course, you would need to be happy to be without your ECU for however long it takes Nels to get the Euro ECU map through R&D.

As far as I can tell, there is not an alternative option for European riders at the moment. There are Flashtune franchisees in Europe (one in Jersey, one in Czech Republic) but they do not have access to Nel's maps and because the Euro bikes do not have the speed restrictor perhaps there has not been enough demand to make it economically viable for them to do R&D to get stock settings. The sheer volume of sales in the USA & Canada means Nels can get his R&D costs back in a reasonable time and make a profit from this service at the $349 price point. I'm sure you could commission one of the race specialists to do a one off but that usually costs you around £4-500 ($614-760) with dyno time if you want a ride in, ride out service.

If you have any questions email Nels. He replies pretty quickly, once you factor in the time difference.

Where is he based? I'll be in NY for a week later this month, maybe I could ship it to him while I am there (and off the road in any case)...
OK, just checked, in WA. I'll try to make contact.
