badkernel
Hello Slowly but surely I am getting tired of cleaning stuff around rear shock (splash from rear tire) that are coming through a hole 1cmx1cm on rear hugger. Wondering if anyone has managed to plug/cover this hole and minimise water/dirt splash ?
Premium Member britelitebob Posted April 26, 2017 Premium Member Share Posted April 26, 2017 Hello Slowly but surely I am getting tired of cleaning stuff around rear shock (splash from rear tire) that are coming through a hole 1cmx1cm on rear hugger. Wondering if anyone has managed to plug/cover this hole and minimise water/dirt splash ? It looks like they had to put some kind of relief there to prevent crud build up as an afterthought or something, it would have been smart if they had tucked that hugger inside the swingarm so the crap would flow through instead of deflecting off the top and going all over everything. I had a similar problem with a gs I had and ended up having to get creative with some rubber flaps because it was trashing the back of my legs but I haven't messed with this bike yet. Were in extreme drought conditions down here now so this won't be a problem for me anytime soon but I wish it was cause I'm getting tired of eating dust and were burning up all over place here. xcsp
It's not just the hole letting road grime through, it's lack of a proper hugger/rear fender. I don't think just plugging that small hole will do much. You may want to make a mud guard/splash guard like redfjniner made, it would be more effective than plugging the hole you referenced. https://fj-09.org/thread/526/flap-protect-rear-shock-road

suncoaster
A year or so ago I did the flap mod from @redfjniner , and put on a hugger extension, and blocked the hole with gaffer (duct) tape, and added a Pyramid Plastics ductail to the rear mudguard, and the shock still gets a little dirty. gabefzr6
I would use some black RTV to seal it up...I used black RTV to fill the hole and the gap across the swing arm. The whole area stays much cleaner now. 2008 Street Triple G 2015 FJ-
badkernel
You guys are just awesome, so many good ideas. Really appreciate the answers!! I will first try with RTV (which is "I'm guessing" sealant of some sorts) if I find something like that in Europe/Norway. Car shop maybe ?? norcal616
I didnt realize you are located across the pond... Here is an example of what Black RTV is in the US... https://www.amazon.com/Permatex-82180-Maximum-Resistance-Silicone/dp/B0002UEN1U 2012 wr250f - C-class 30+ age group 2015 fz-07- Hordpower Edition-80whp 2015 fj-09- Graves Exhaust w/Woolich tune by 2WDW @120whp
BBB
RTV is room temperature vulcanisation, or more simply a mastic that goes off by itself without need for a curing agent. Motor factors will sell them as instant gasket or simply sealant. Red 2015 Tracer, UK spec (well, it was until I started messing with it...) tebe
I got tired of looking at that unfinished ugly hole in rear hugger. I found a clean solution to plug the hole. I purchased a Horseshoe Rubber Grommet, Rubber Plug 1" Diameter p.n. 927-2846 off eBay sold by Aeclsouth in lot of quantity of 10, but they sold me quantity of 1 for $2 + $2 S&H. Attached photos shows how I trimmed Rubber Horseshoe Grommet to fit. I folded bottom flap back under hugger. Photos show both inside and outside of hugger with rubber grommet on my 2016 FJ-09.
