  1. Since I got the wheel to work with the correct technique it has worked every time without fail. I do scroll thru the various displays but do not do more without stopping. I know some of us think we should be able to do everything while in motion, I don't think it safe. Lots of years riding and age lead me there.
  2. Some days I hear my gt whine, most days I don't. When I hear it, it seems really loud but short lived when speed increases >65. I'd rather the be no whine but thats the bike I have.
  3. I don't need another distraction while moving. That switch was on the bike when I bought it. There is plenty of opprlortunity to stop for a minute to turn them on/off/adjust. My opinion of course.
  4. My problem with the thing was me being too slow with the first push and holding the wheel in too long. Your idea may be great so keep us posted on developments. But I was my issue! D'oh!
  5. I ran out of ear plugs and noticed the whine last week on a ride to help a buddy for several days. Curious, my Tracer 900 has synthetic oil in it, do all of you with the whine use synthetic or some Dino?
  6. I have seen 5. 2 locally, 1 in Durango, 1 locally, 1 where I don't recall.
  7. We all grouse over something with eveything we buy. The Tracer 9gt seat, the windscreen, the handlebars, some of technology - "why didn't Yam fix this with the new model" etc. Well, I am an aging/aged long time rider, long time ago back injuries now are big for me so the seat and ride ht are important hence why is the oem seat so terrible! I've changed seat on my last 4 bikes, installed lowering links, adjusted suspensions, footpeg lowering kits, bar risers/set backs, windscreens, ad nauseum. What works for me many here would hate and vice versa. So, who among us would Yamaha make changes for at the expense of others? As I actually expected my issues with the '20 thumbwheel adjuster was me, not the adjuster. I bought the 2020 Tracer 900GT because of it's fairly light weight, all that comes standard on the bike, its power and technology. I haven't ridden the other bikes deemed eligible of BOT, except KLR (loved my KLR) but based on what the article states about improvements Yamaha has made the award seems well deserved IMO. Did Yamaha buy the award? I doubt it, I'm not a skeptic though generally.
  8. I have never had reduced ram's affect my low speed travel. If I need to downshift, I do it. We fret sonetimes about non-issues.
  9. Think I know what I was doing. With key on, after scrolling to the icon I wanted to reset or turn on/,off I was not quick. I was holding in the thumbwheel, and not releasing.it quickly. It works with a quick push and release. The half push reset the item. Others having the same problem I did may check their technique. Hope this helps others.
  10. Loose has always been better than tight. Always.
  11. TODAY IT WORKED!!??!! As far as I can tell I did nothing different but I got the trip odo's zeroed, the total gallons consumed, and was able to turn on/off/and adjust the grip heater settings. No idea what changed. So for the moment I call a truce on myself about complaining. Thanks for everyone's patience.
  12. I put a couple rubber washers on the mounting screws so the section is far enough forward, miniscule out, there is no contact with handguards. Easy and cheap!
  13. MadStad is excellent, on my 2nd, last was on a different bike. Pricey, but works great.
  14. Al, several years ago a couple of us took a guy who rode an Indian over Bear Tooth Pass, there was spotty ice on the roadway and snow piled up at least 5' deep at the summit, temps in the mid 30's. The we told the guy what to expect, I had on lined riding pants, base layers, Tour Master heated liner and gloves, heated grips, neck wrap, the whole 9 yards. Despite our many urgings the guy wore jeans, unlined leather chaps, and a lined leather coat, cheap lined gloves. I was freezing, this guy was nearly frozen. Once over the summit we stopped on descent at the restrooms on the Red Lodge side of the pass. The guy had to do everything possible to get his hands warm so his fingers would work on his zipper. None of us were willing to help him with his zipper nor the next step to relieve himself. Eventually the guy got it done and was laughing almost as hysterically as the rest of us.!😂 Never ever do I get tired of Bear Tooth Pass!
  15. Early on in this thread RandyM posted a photo of his partial disassembly of the cluster. The thumbwheel looks innocent enough in his photo but we all know how those innocent things can turn into big messes. All the parts fiches I have seen show the cluster and wire harness as one unit, and no detail of the thumbwheel is shown. It's plug and go so if the connector for the harness isn't buried and hard to reach it should be an easy replacement. Might try to look for someone parting out a wrecked bike, I have not done that yet.
  16. I thought about that. Read the product labels, not MSDS's though. No obvious negative impacts. If I take the cluster apart that should indicate something. Point well taken petshark, thx.
  17. I'll look for them in the morning. I don't remember the model, I never put them on either bike. I'll pm you.
  18. Too far away to be of help but years ago I bought a set of hippo hands to use on my dual sport bikes. Never did use them, still have the set unused in the original box. Shipping would be ridiculous. Good luck, and I agree, the older we get the less important visuals are.
  19. Today on the way out I tried the thumbwheel on grip heaters several times with no result except for one time, shocked me so much I hit the wheel again and lost it, could not get it to flash again. Then I tried again and got the cumulative mpg to flash and got it zeroed out. never could bet the grip icon to flash, nor the trip a/b miles. Had to hold the wheel pushed firm to ever get from the damn menu back to the main display, and from the menu screen the display went to maintenance scheduling, very difficult to get out of that. Many times I had to turn the key off and back on to get out of menu. Think tomorrow when I have more time I will spray the Deoxit let it sit several minutes and then blow compressed air into the cluster around the left side of the thumbwheel. Can't hurt, except I sure don't want to mess up the start/stop switch!!
  20. I have talked to my dealer and 2 others and they claim they have few complaints about the thumbwheel. I find that very hard to believe. But, I wonder how many of us here have that thumbwheel on our bikes and how many have trouble with it if it works at all. I have tried pushing from all angles but will try what petshark suggests just to be sure. I will also try penetrating oil despite that being contrary to my thinking. What the heck! So far Detox5, dry silicon lube, lithium spray, nothing has helped. Replacing the rh switch cluster with a new one is no guarantee the new one will work any better. As for rh vs lh side I will settle for a switch cluster that works! The jumping to Menu from what you want to reset or turn on is extremely aggravating! Yamaha employees must have bikes with the wheel and most of them can't work any better for them. Haven't called Yamaha yet but will soon.
  21. Well, since I had my dealer shoot silicon into the thumbwheel switch it has worked less and less each attempt to zero out mileage, mpg, or turn on/off the grip heaters. I know we can figure mpg and adjust mileage like we always have, manually, but dammit, we paid for the thumbwheel to work and it doesn't. I've tried the $17 can of Detox spray and shot the hell out of the cluster, the grip heater icon flashed once then the damn screen jumped to Menu as it does most of the time. I looked at replacing the cluster of Start/Stop thumbwheel switch, cheapest is $116 plus shipping and local tax, up to $156 plus. Surely the butt head design engineer who designed that mess rides and knows it doesn't work worth crap. I have a number for Yamaha USA and intend to all them but I have a week or so upcoming when I won't be able to ride. Think I will take the cluster off the bike and take it apart. What can I lose if the POS doesn't work now?! This kind of problem, that surely Yamaha has to know about, really pisses me off. It should be on a recall, but so far it isn't. I've had oem grip heaters on several bikes and put after market heaters on several bikes, it is a nice accessory to have IMO. Yes, the other stuff I can work around but we paid for the stuff to work, and it is Yamaha's responsibility to fix it. (OK, I'm done for the time being, but may vent some more later on).
  22. Do it all the time. Gotta be smart enough to not get close to places where bearings, seals, or electrical connections lurk.
  23. Search for a Caferacer website. Bet you can find a sear or a cowling to cover the pillion seat space. Good luck.
