Sorry - another oil Thread...

Is it OK to use motor-car engine oils in our bikes, so long as it's a good brand of the correct spec?

The owners manual says to use oil with a JASO MA spec, and to avoid oils for diesel engines. Many oils for cars are incorrect viscosity and have an energy conserving feature which must also be avoided.

No it certainly is not ok.

I went to to look at a DRZ400 I was planning on purchasing.  I did not purchase the bike as it could not find neutral.  The guy selling it called me the next day and explained that he had used car oil in it.  He told me that he has since changed it to moto grade oil and it was running perfectly now.  Needless to say I passed on buying the bike still.

I’ve used “car” oils, “diesel” oils, and “motorcycle” oils that meet the JASO specs for many 10’s of many 1000’s of many miles. Never had an oil related problem.

Yay an oil thread! :)

Use the least expensive oil I can find that meets the viscosity recommendation *and* any recommendation pertaining to wet clutches (See image). Have done this with all motorcycles for many years and never a single clutch or engine oil related failure. Motorcycle Consumer News dispelled the "It's got a motorcycle label on it, it must be better" myth ages ago. It doesn't stop oil threads tho. Folks will be in here talking about magnesium and doing oil analysis and reading bob is the oil guy and judging a filter by cutting it open. It's all just noise. Ride more worry less.

Just put some Rotella T4 15w40 in mine.  It has JASO  MA/MA 2 certification, and so does T6... so it's fine even if it is considered a diesel oil... it doesn't have any "CD" certification looking at the Rotella site...

Rotella rocks!   👍

All in good fun, Wordsmith!  Definitely not my intention to offend.  Oil, tires, seats and windscreens are probably the most subjective topics out there related to motorcycles among all of us wild children who ride'em!

Def no offence taken, whistler - 'twas MY attempt to have a little fun too!   Do not slit your wrists!

You are quite correct about those other highly subjective topics; I've been around various motorcycle Forums for a very long time now, and the same things (and opinions) crop up all the time!   Some folks would have you believe that black is white and the earth flat...  Meantime, I'll stick to designated m/c specific oils, even if it is snake-oil!

OK, so to add a question a little different. I use Castrol 10W40, it runs about $10.00 to $11.00 + tax a quart locally. Was considering purchasing online for a cost saving.

Any thoughts on the possibility of this oil being fake? Meaning it is counterfeit by producing a container that looks right and putting some really low in stuff in the bottle.

I have purchase a USB drive that was fake, the sellers overclocked the drive making it appear twice the size it really was,  it failed in a few months. Called the Scandisk and they walked me through the process to proved it was counterfeit.

I just ordered a six pack of the exact same stuff on eBay from pep boys.  I have no way of knowing if it’s legitimate or not.
