Hey guys, I'm picking up my Tracer in a week or 2 and I can't wait.

She's a 2016 MT-09 Tracer with full givi luggage. Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations on things I can do to/with the bike?

I heard that I can flash the ecu, for example. What's the point/benefit of flashing it and what would it do for me?

Welcome, congrats on the new-to-you bike.

Since the bike is so versatile, you can adjust/ modify it to suit your needs - sport, touring, commuting etc.  I would ride it for a while and take mental notes of your likes/ dislikes and then make decisions from there.

Personally, I always modify/adjust  ergonomics (handlebars, levers/controls, seat, screen etc.) first and foremost to fit me comfortably and then suspension and quality tires a very close second.  Your needs and wants might be completely different.  Enjoy the bike!!

Welcome @N1ghtr0d and congratulations on the new-to-you Tracer.  We’re huge enablers around here, and can always suggest ways for you to spend money on your bike, often for things you probably didn’t even know existed previously...  :)

That said, I think @betoney has the correct advice:   Just ride it for a few weeks to get a feel for its character, and it will start to tell you what to do next.  The CP3 triple is absolutely the star of the show:  Great usable power wrapped up with a ton of character.   Personally, I went the more sporting route with configuring my FJ (smaller screen, lower bars, suspension upgrades, big brakes, etc).  Others have gone more to the touring end of the spectrum.   The good news is the bike will suit just about anything, so get a feel for your personal needs & then start updating to suit...  the forum is full of useful information and collective knowledge.

To your specific question about the ECU flash:   The early model bikes had a reputation for somewhat abrupt on/off throttle transitions (especially in the more aggressive A mode), and an updated flash has been a very popular modification.  It also gives you the option to default to a different drive mode at start up, removes speed governors (114 mph indicated on US bikes; don’t believe that applied to UK machines), etc.    Ride yours and see what you think, and then decide if you want to investigate further...

Welcome and glad you are with us.

It looks like she's kitted out nicely already: Luggage, big wind screen, driving lights, etc.

I respectfully suggest your main job now is to ride the tires off her until your smile hurts.

May the road rise to meet you and the wind be at your back.

Thanks for all the advice lads. I'm gonna defo enjoy this bike. It'll be my first Yamaha after owning 3 Harly Davidsons, 2 Kawasaki Vulcans, and my Honda Varadero so I'm gonna enjoy it until the wheels fall off.

@peteinpa Are you from PA? I lived in Philly for 13 years. I could be way off with the assumption and look like a dope though, lol.

Way out near Harrisburg! Well if either of you lads are ever near Bristol, which is just outside Philly, go visit the Cantina bar. My brother owns it and he rides too. (yes I'm aware of the irony of an Irish man owning a Mexican restaurant, lol)

Welcome to the fold and congratulations on your new FJ, you got the best color the bike ever came in!

I couldn't agree more brother. I was all set to buy a Crosstourer 1200 and then I stumbled across the Tracer 900 and I fell the phuck in love with her on the spot. I'll be picking her up hopefully in the next week or so.

Agreed, lol. Are you originally from Ireland?

My family came over on the boat to Ellis Island in the late eighteen hundreds like everyone else did and eventually settled in Chicago and Indianapolis

Chicago was Ireland second largest city for a while until the Poles took over

You'll enjoy your fastest red FJ to the max I'm sure whenever it stops raining LOL
