Tank bags ... choices ?

Recommended Posts

I'm planning on riding out west in june , I'm not sure what tank bag to get. I have a tail bag of and my hard bags and I'm looking into Nelson -Rigg CTB 1010 , this a 4 week trip. I would like a tank bag that  has some king of window to glance at my notes. I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask here what everyone is using... thanks

I found the Kappa RA308 to a great price on Ebay in UK. Similar to a Givi item made by the same company but cheaper. Has 3 small zipped pockets and the map window. Clips onto the tank using a flange on the tank filler which you buy as a separate part. Easy on/off when refuelling - it comes with a strap that goes around the headstock so you slide it to one side and let the strap take the strain when filling the tank.

http://www.kappamoto.com/Soft-Luggage/Tank-bags/RA308-TANKLOCK shows the bag, although in the new 308R trim that is a little different to mine as shown below - probably why the RA308 are being sold cheap - good luck finding one.

RKA Luggage Shiloh Road 13-liter expandable bag. It attaches with straps and is very solid. Here's their FJ-09 photo page

The curve of the bag base matches that of the tank well.

I have the Nelson Rigg CL 2015 tank bag ( https://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/nelson-rigg-cl-2015-journey-sport-tank-bag ) and the Nelson Rigg CL 1040 TP tail bag ( https://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/nelson-rigg-cl-1040-tp-jumbo-tail-bag ). I really like both of them, they are both expandable and they both come with rain covers that are decently effective. You can also buy a gps "journey mate" taht attaches to the tank bag if wanted ( https://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/nelson-rigg-cl-gps-journey-mate ) . Only thing I would say is that if you have one of the matte finishes, then put something down on the tank to protect it. Over time the the area where the magnets contact will polish out a little (i used vinyl wrap and created my own tank protector).

+1 on the Evo Engage. I have an older model with the newer tank ring. Works like a charm, doesn't damage the tank paint that I can tell but I dont baby my bikes. Its a minor hassle to remove with the little metal wire loop but that also means its a pain for thieves to remove too.

Did just fine for a 3,000 mile trip. Not totally jazzed about the map pocket on the tank bag, but it's well made and should last for years....

I use a Bags-Connection bag that mounts to a ring around the gas filler and the strap on map pocket.
I have an RKA InCharge bag on my Tenere. RKA makes some really nice stuff.

I'm not sold on the magnetic mounted bags... just prefer the ring.
The only type I have ever used is the magnetic mount, never a problem.  It has held at speeds over 120mph many times and it never moved an inch.  They hold surprisingly well. I am currently looking at a new one as mine is several years old and doesn't  conform to the shape of the FJ tank like it did on my FZ1, I am considering SW Motech with a ring mount.

Did the rack come with that tailbag ?

Have the same tail bag... very good, although I had to rig up the straps with metal hardware etc. Lives on my rear seat, or sometimes the top case plate. I would have liked a tank bag with an integrated map pocket, but I'm not sold on the magnetic mounted bags... just prefer the ring.

No that's a standard Yamaha luggage rack. I started out with just strapping the tail bag down like it's designed but I always have it on there so.....

I got it exactly where I wanted it, Drilled a hole through the bag and rack, used a piece of 1/4 inch "StarBoard" and a 1/4-20 stainless steel sidewalk bolt and fender washer.

That's because you've used the ring from the MT/FZ09. This doesn't work on the FJ/Tracer due to the trim over the tank.
