Intent to recall FJ09 March 25, 2015

Recommended Posts

Glenview 09:  Let me rephrase:  When I asked about the recalls in the mentioned countries US, UK, Netherlands, Canada, and Australia (working largely off the posts and serial numbers cited in this forum as a reference) Yamaha's technical specialist said - "yeah, it's a problem".  They acknowledge that it extends to other bikes, too -the FZ 09 and the Super Tenere.  He mentioned serial number ranges and confirmed mine from a database he had access to.  Next time I guess I need to capture the audio... ::)  Their product specialist will not say how they found the problem or discuss any other issues or speculate on other countries as "he works for Yamaha in the US" unless you have specific data/complaints and he will refer you to the appropriate contact (my assumption).  Not a very forthcoming sort.  I suppose he's beaten by lawyers every morning before he's allowed to use the phone.

I think as long as you don't bang gears or shift without a clutch the load will not be strained and we can still ride until the recall (as always, YMMV). At least that is what I plan on doing. It shifts fine so far.

ULEWZ, I may be a 255 pound troglodyte, but I doubt my ankles are strong enough to have mine start having problems at 40 miles and refuse to upshift by 110 unless something was badly wrong.  Parts are ordered. Hope it shifts like the Yamahas I'm used to when I get it back.  Hopefully no stray shrapnel is wandering around the innards.  I'll know when I pick it up.  Think the dealer will let me see the old parts?

Here's my theory.  Yamaha engineers ran an engine at 10,000 rpm for a month, shifted up and down like maniacs and finally this part failed.  It shouldn't have so they are issuing a recall with a fix.  Good work in my mind.  But I'm going to keep riding mine until they tell me not to, and probably after that until the part is in and the mechanic at my dealership can prove to me he knows what he's doing and it gets fixed.  Heck, I've only got 250 miles on it and haven't run over 7,000 rpm for even a short time yet.  I'm not worried and I'm definitely not going to stop riding right now!

David is probably bigger than you and he had some issues, but is continuing to ride. If it is a recall, Mother Yamaha will want the parts back to examine. If you are there, they may show you, but won't give you the parts unfortunately.

My recall has been completed. Took less than two hours, and the dealer showed me the difference in the shift shaft mechanism. Hardly noticeable. I asked him if it could affect shifting, he says no. Shifting should become easier as bike breaks in.
Still snow on ground and cold here in London, Ontario. Haven't had a chance for a proper ride outside the city, to run through the gears

I just spoke with Brian in Yamaha customer Service.  After asking me if his number was listed on a forum, he told me that the parts are on hand but the whole thing is held up pending approval by NHTSA.  He then put me on hold and came back saying that NHTSA approved the recall this morning.  I called my dealer immediately after and spoke with the service department who said that something came off the fax this morning.  He then read the fax which stated that the dealer must order the "Kits" for the replacement parts as they are not set up to "auto-ship".  The kits for the FJ/FZ-09 are identical but the other models each have their own unique kits.

Call your dealers if you are waiting in the US of A.  The recall is in YDS but they need to take action to get the parts coming.  Best of luck and keep the shiny side up.

I just received the same information as nekidtriple, a few minutes ago, when I called my Socal dealer to see what the word was. I was told they had just received official confirmation as of this morning and would order "my" parts immediately. They where aware of the recall but had no official word from Yamaha to act and in fact they were even unsure if they were to continue selling new bikes. She also confirmed the notice said to not ride the bike till repaired. I also would call your local dealer as nekidtriple suggested, I can see a parts shortage in the future.

After reading this post I called my dealer immediately. Spoke to the service guy who was "Alone today and really busy" was told he would check into it and call me back. Good thing the bike is in the garage waiting on the recall to be fixed, Jk I rode yesterday but they don't know that.

At least your dealer is OPEN on Mondays!  Mine is closed Sunday and Monday, but hey, I guess I can wait another day to make sure my kit is ordered!

Just got off the phone w/ the dealer just South of here and looks like we're GTG for numbers being loaded into the system. Said that they put their bikes in for the recall parts, and I'd get a call as soon as mine comes in. He then said screw it, if the other showroom floor models parts come in first that he'd call me and have me bring mine in and get it up on the rack and ready to go. Those dont have owners yet, and yours needs miles.  8-)

Ended up scheduling the 600 mile ( which was 250 miles ago ) service also so two birds, one check. lol

Just got my recall done.
This is what they replace. Went for lunch and my dealer had it all done. Super quick fix. They had done it already on their other bike on the showroom so had experience doing mine. No oil change required also.
