fj09newbie
I've seen numerous bikes going to the freeway work Shad & GIVI racks/cases...almost every Shad case was bouncing up & down, while every GIVI Monokey case appeared to be rock-solid. This was a considerable part of the reason why I chose GIVI (that, and FAR more recommendations). as much as I like the CP3 mounting of the SHAD, I definitely do not want much bouncing out of the top case or side cases. I want that rock solid feel. and with the Givi quick release mounts for the side bags, I think I might just go that route.
Supporting Member betoney Posted July 25, 2018 Supporting Member Share Posted July 25, 2018 Shad's brackets looked to be somewhat on the "flimsy" side. When you are talking about flimsy brackets and bouncing cases, are you talking about a top box or side cases? i don’t have a top box, but the side case brackets are very well made and attach with 4 bolts per side, there is no bouncing or movement at all, not even a millimeter. ***2015 Candy Red FJ-09***

Tusk
Since I have these laying around I thought I do a few photos for anyone wishing to see a comparo of some top boxes and saddlebags. The top boxes are : Givi V47, Shad SH40 and Yamaha 39L. The Saddlebags are FJ-09, FJR and Shad SH36. The Shad gear resides on my wife's Honda CTX700 DCT. I have an FJR and an extra set of FJR bags for trips plus the FJ-09 "Street Bags". So just for an FYI and "S&Gs" as a co-worker likes to say. Givi V47 with helmet. This one will actually fit two full face helmets. This is an older model, but I really love the Givi product! Shad SH40 with same helmet. Yamaha OEM case with helmet. Open lids... insert "Feed Me Seymour" and Pac-Man jokes here. Back sides Interesting that the tallest profile is also the smallest capacity here. More to come... Tusk
The handles and latch mechanisms.... How the saddlebags connect... The Shad is very tight with rubber pads. They hold very securely on the CTX. The FJ/FJR bags rely heavily on the hanger hooks. For the uninitiated, there is a notch on the lower "front" side of the bag that secures it from rocking. The FJ lid compared to the FJR lid from the inside. Open up and say "luggage"! er-sometihing like that. The Shad side cases have a nice lip for keeping stuff from falling when the lid is opened. A full face helmet does fit in the Shad cases (both sides). This helmet is a medium size. My large will fit, however without the Sena communicator installed. The FJ and FJR bag interiors are the same. Just the lids are different. A helmet in the FJ bag? Not so much... With an FJR lid? Yes! Again, medium sized helmet here, but my large does fit sans communicator. That's all the pics I have at the moment. I hope this helps anyone shopping for saddlebags and/or top boxes. BBB
Great post @tusk. I didn’t know that the FJ and FJR bags only differed in the lids, but it makes sense for Yamaha. kmev
The 50 liter Yamaha top case holds two full face helmets on their sides, or exactly 36 ears of sweetcorn.

gskett
Hello. I purchased the OEM top case (the small one). I try not to overload it but it is great for helmet and small items. I ride 2 up sometimes so i got the backrest added. I went for the Givi trekker side cases. Love them as they have the full or half clamshell opening so you can access them without dropping all your gear! I also use a drybag on the rear saddle when in full camp mode. Yes the rear end can get a little squirrely when fully loaded with gear but not worse than simple 2 up. I did get the OEM light kit. I use them to point at the ground as the standard headlight is pretty bright they are almost not needed...but great for questionable roads. bravobravo
As a retired lawyer, I can tell you without doubt, that the suggestion side cases and top cases should not be used together is indeed “lawyer speak.” I use my Givi V47 top case along with V35 side cases regularly. I am very cautious about putting only light weight items in the top case, and have had zero issues. The same disclaimer was invoked by Yamaha when I purchased my Super Tenere, BTW. As a side note, I have the high mount brake light installed in my V47, and friends riding behind me have said that the additional brake lighting really makes the bike stand out. Cheers, Bruce
