  1. Thanks for the info I will be down that way in about 3 weeks. I will be coming from Mt Shasta into Mineral and then riding 32 and ending up in Yuba City for the night. The following morning I will be heading over Carson Pass to Markleeville and Carson City for the night. I have never ridden either 32 or Carson Pass, I'm really looking forward to it. I always try to mix the familiar roads with something new each time in California, last year I rode 49 through Downieville and Ebbetts Pass and the year before was 70 through Belden and Sonora Pass.
  2. There was a short section of Highway 12 over Lolo Pass that was under construction and one other short section on the route that had been chip sealed but most of the route was smooth pavement in great condition.
  3. Did the base level Tracer come with the slip/assist clutch? If not then now would be the perfect time to upgrade. https://www.partshark.com/product/53311/xsr900-slipper-clutch-for-fz-09 Like everything, the price has gone up about 40% since I bought mine back in '17.
  4. I have ridden dirt bikes all of my life until last year. There is no way you can get both feet down, the seat height on full sized bikes is over 38" and I always added a taller seat for better seat to peg distance. The trick is to slide your butt off to one side when you stop, one foot on the ground and one foot on the foot peg. I am so used this method, I use it on the street as well. Even with a 34" inseam I never have both feet on the ground.
  5. The happy spot in this motor is around 5k rpm. If you run the revs too low it starts to feel labored, sluggish and vibey.
  6. I noticed the exact same thing while on a road trip last week. I got great mileage when riding up to 65mph but the fuel economy dropped quickly at 70mph and above.
  7. Can you elaborate a bit on what you are experiencing? The first generation FJ wasn't known for having stellar suspension (maybe slightly better than the original FZ09) but I knew that when buying the bike. After upgrading the suspension the bike handles like a dream, it is both comfortable for long road trips and controlled and compliant when riding the twistier roads.
  8. We stopped and talked with a large group of riders from Texas , 2 drivers trailered 12 bikes and the other 10 guys flew in for a week of riding this very same area, they were in awe, they loved the scenery and the roads and the diversity of riding locations- oceans, mountains, desert, dense forest, canyons etc. I admit we are very spoiled having this in our relative backyard or within a days ride away.
  9. I just returned from a 5-day ride with my brother, the map link isn't an exact road listing but is very close to our route. https://goo.gl/maps/YP6goN1sk4tgdGqW7 We were initially concerned with the weather in the mountain passes, each morning forecast for cold and light rain., the first morning was Chinook Pass, the second morning was Sherman Pass, the third morning was Lolo Pass and the 5th morning was White Pass. We still got cold mornings but fortunately they were dry and sunny. In addition to riding through scenic mountains we also rode through Hell's Canyon, central Oregon and the Columbia River Gorge. Great weather the entire time, amazing scenery, phenomenal roads and some really good brew pubs each night.
  10. I have never used a front fender extender but have used a radiator guard on every bike I have owned. I can handle a little bit of water splash but a punctured radiator will ruin your day.
  11. Were you running yours without the baffle? Between the baffle and wearing ear plugs I don't notice mine at all while riding.
  12. Thanks @Heli ATP Yes, just like a scone. It is a popular breakfast bread usually used for a breakfast sandwich or in this case, covered in sausage gravy.
  13. This time of year I usually shift into road trip mode, we have shorter riding seasons than other regions so I try to pack in as much as I can while the weather holds. July and August are 2 different trips to California, July to the Sierra Passes/Lake Tahoe area and then August to the Happy Camp/Willow Creek area and ride the California/Oregon/Washington Coast North on HWY101. I had originally planned a 9 day Utah/Colorado trip in July but moved that one to next summer.
  14. That BBQ looks great. I took a ride south yesterday morning and got a late breakfast. Hard to beat biscuits and gravy with Tabasco, topped with runny eggs.
  15. This morning I got my bike loaded for the upcoming first road trip of the season. This was supposed to be my second trip to start the season but Northern California weather wasn't cooperating around Memorial Day, nothing but thunderstorms forecast in upper elevations so I postponed that trip until after the 4th of July instead. This trip, my brother and I will ride the North Cascades highway across Washington (it parallels the Canadian border) through Idaho into Montana and then ride Lolo Pass back through Idaho, into Oregon to Hells Canyon. We will meet up with a high school buddy who also rides and spend a day in central Oregon meandering up to the Columbia River Gorge for a night and then finally back home. There is crazy weather everywhere lately, we have already seen 90's this spring and now the holiday weekend is forecast for 50's and rain... I'm hoping it improves by the time we leave next week.
  16. That post is for the GS though, the RS is completely different. https://www.webbikeworld.com/2023-bmw-r-1250-rs-review/?utm_source=Behind+the+Visor&utm_campaign=b963159b98-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2023_06_14_05_42&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_-b963159b98-[LIST_EMAIL_ID]&goal=0_b175d17323-b963159b98-131719029&mc_cid=b963159b98&mc_eid=c8d1ce64c5
  17. Just for a reference, this a united states cycletrader search result for the 2019 and 2020 models. https://www.cycletrader.com/Yamaha-Tracer-900-Gt/motorcycles-for-sale?type=Motorcycle|356953&make=Yamaha|2321194&model=TRACER|764975193&trim=900 GT|53685
  18. I would only worry about overheating if the bike was actually overheating, I have ridden many times in central and southern California on Summer days with temperatures well over 100F and have never had issues, even in stop and go traffic with the fan running constantly. The bike has never given me any reason to worry so I only ever focus on the ambient air temp display.
  19. You can get kits that offer both options. If you are going to replace the lines, it is MUCH easier to replace the entire line instead of piecing them together. The old lines can be cut out and thrown away fairly easily.
  20. IF they offer it in red, I hope its the '15 FJ red. I personally don't like the current red.
  21. When you get a check engine light (CEL) it should show an error code on the right screen to let you know what the error is. What is the error code? Is the bike new to you? did it have the ECU flashed when you bought it? Did the CEL start suddenly or did you do any work on the bike that might have triggered it?
  22. How do you like your seat from Rich's? I have had mine for almost 6 years and put 65k miles on it and couldn't be happier. Conversely, I bought a Corbin for my VFR last year and don't like it AT ALL, it is unbelievably hard and uncomfortable. Lesson learned, I will never settle for anything less than a ride-in custom built seat on any other bike I buy in the future.
  23. Great job documenting this and making it work. I love finding solutions like that even if it needs slight manipulation with a Dremel tool or bracket modification. I never liked the oem Niken side bags, an aftermarket solution to be able to mount hard bags is a great find! 👍🏻
  24. I bought those same chain adjuster blocks many years ago, SO much better than the oem design. I wanted to post a link to share with others but couldn't find them available online anymore. I agree with you and @bwringer - after the initial adjustment on the new chain, I just don't need to adjust the chain until it starts to get near the end of its life.
  25. Is the rebound adjuster always fully open? meaning no damping? as @OZVFR mentioned, your rebound settings shouldn't be at zero. Your damping adjustments control the SPEED of the spring compressing down and or rebounding back up. You don't want the suspension to bounce, you want it to move up and down in a controlled manner. You can set baseline settings while in the garage or driveway but most of your adjustments should occur while riding. I have always kept a straight slot screwdriver in my tank bag for suspension tweaks while riding.
