  1. Today I put the VStream back on. I mean, I've never ridden with the factory screen - so just HAD to try it. Oops.
  2. Installed my eBay hugger last night. The brackets are indeed a bit fiddly but nothing too taxing. It's that aerodynamic penetration that excites me. Will be testing that out at lunch time...that's right: a nooner aerodynamic penetration test (IT joke, aw gawd I kill me). ...too far ?
  3. Ever tipped over ? My V-Strom airbox had about 1/4 cup of oil in the airbox when I tipped it (fractured an ankle, too...)
  4. I can't comment on the Triumph, but I hear you with the V-Strom(s). Coming from a V-Strom DL1000, I can tell you that the FJ-09 / Tracer handles WAY better. The 'Strom's usually have a larger front wheel; mine has a 19", but the FJ/Tracer has a 17". I had no idea just how much this affects handling until riding one after the other. It's a world of difference. The FJ/Tracer is also lighter - it 'feels' much lighter than it actually is; and, for the cubes, delivers more power. I'll miss the DL for the comfort...the PO had installed a 3" footpeg lowering kit. That and the styling (big beefy bike) are about all I'll miss. Yamaha has converted me, and I'm not afraid to take the FJ down any road, for any length of time, even a bit of gravel here and there. I find it to be a confidence-inducing bike, even in the city. The seat slope doesn't bother me, in fact I prefer to plant a bit more forward - that's totally subjective, though.

    Pillar Point

wow looks like an amazing loop. Thanks for sharing
  6. !! You were hit by a car and the only damage was to decals ? That sounds incredibly lucky!
  7. Dang that is a COLLECTION over the years +1 for all that mud
  8. Yep. I got this Yamaha FJ600 FJ1100 FJ1200 FJ Service Repair Maintenance Workshop Shop Manual | eBay Find many great new & used options and get the best deals for... ...it's a Flash implementation of a PDF. Not bad. Table of contents are linked, it's indexed (so you can use search terms), it's pretty smooth. Printable, can zoom in/out. The clutch section seems comprehensive enough, but I don't see mention of the slipper clutch.

Now THAT's thinking outside of the box!! Great tip
  10. Damnnn, that sucks, but wow that's really generous of you. Wish I lived in your area!!
  11. I'm about to replace the left engine cover this weekend, which means removing the water pump, so I'll be facing the same question too...
  12. When something like this happened on my V-Strom, it resulted in #4 and #5 metatarsal fractures in my left foot. Not realizing that, I rode it home. Damn bike is a HEAVY sob. That could have been faaaar worse, glad to hear it was the best of a bad situation and that your season isn't over:)
  13. Geeze, and all this time I've been eyeballing...
  14. Yeah, loved the 'Strom for that. I've ridden on some pretty cold days but my hands were always fine. Looks like a good hack! Thanks for the tips
  15. haha too funny, I installed BarkBusters on my V-Strom DL1000 (for sale), and still have the OEM handguards...guess I know what to do with them now...
  16. These fit great in my touring bags Amazon.ca Something Went Wrong / Quelque chose s'est mal passé Although I can't explain what went wrong with Amazon, the link should be fine...
  17. Looks great!! Thanks for the excellent write-up, you're giving me some ideas... ...still far to clean, though
  18. And this is one of the many reasons I'm shopping for a dedicated GPS unit! I've had a far better experience with a Garmin than I have with my phone. Yes, maps can be cached, but my S8 has soft buttons that don't work with my moto gloves, and it does not have a glove mode. Yes, there are touch-screen gloves. Those are hit-and-miss in my experience. I'd FAR rather a dedicated unit than fiddling with that ()#@&^@) phone. When I'm riding I have ZERO wish to be a systems analyst. I do that enough all day and don't need the distraction when riding. I have an Xcover 4 for just this reason, however it's not much better TBH. Phones just don't cut it for me. Can't decide between a TomTom moto and a Garmin. ATM I'm leaning toward the TomTom for the traffic updates. Anyway, thanks for sharing your experience - and I've been there, down some back road and oops, no cell service, dang it where the heck am I.
  19. Generally speaking, losing a bit of weight from the machine is just as good, if not better, as adding power. However, for batteries - I agree - commodity item. I can think of some scenarios where it might make sense. Warm climate and $ is no object. Or maybe a small dual sport or dirt bike where you're pulling lots of stunts or otherwise need a light bike.
  20. I was living in Vancouver, BC, at the time - it was dark for about a week. I had some ash from that event, and a 'fossilized' plant. Really cool. Devastating - but cool.
  21. ...maybe an exchange program? hahaha
