  1. I idle mine in 1st to lube also......no code, 2015 red. Maybe because it's red. 😅
  2. Thanks for the tip on removing the old chain. Yes I grind off the old rivets and use a punch before taking the old chain off. I actually haven't used the breaker do push out the old link. Do use an electronic caliper to check the amount I sinch the rivet down tho so the link is the same width as the ones on the chain. After I break off the ends after tightening down the bolts I'll grind it a bit to pretty it up like in the YouTube vid. Once you've had a good chain you can feel the stock chain is cheap by the time you have 3,000 miles on it. Mine is at 12.5 and has links binding on it. Only use WD-40 and a chain brush to clean it and I think it's Bel-Ray lube on it. Anyway thanks for the tip. You never know what people know or have done before.
  3. Mine is the SW-Motec City Bag with the 308, higher ring it suggests for it. It's 15 liters and holds everything, plus water bottles, etc. I did want a bit bigger bag that can hold a days worth of stuff and room in case ya buy something out on the road.
  4. Hey, link is still good; https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F311557082474 Magnetic too! Just gives you a state of engine condition. Don't think it's going to stop anything. Just seeing the little bit of black powder material each time and not slivers makes ya feel good. Everything's OK.
  5. Cool, I will watch for this. I'm just putting on my 1st set of these. Bought 2 rears and 1 front. My 1st trip is to The Hill Country in Texas that is known for chewing thru tires, chip seal deluxe is the coating on the roads there. Known to go thru 1/2 worn tires in a weekend so most of us now go to The Hill Country with new tires. Too many of us have been bitten. We will also see if I get the mileage out of the rears I have gotten, 3,200 to 3,600 on ZX11's and ZRX1100's. Much heaver bikes.
  6. Can't test the 40 degree weather. I don't ride in temps below my age, LOL! 60 or above for me. And no I don't think they weren't put out to compete with Shinko. They have been out for years before they made the newer model of RoadSmart III's. They used to cost like RoadSmart III's too. I get about 3,600 miles out of a rear tire just because I'm a bit hard on tires. Used to run AVON 79's on my ZRX1100 but only got 1,200 miles a rear out of those but man were they confidence inspiring. Yeah, don't use Shinkos, they have shook on the front over 100 mph both times I tried them. I'm still a 2 rears to 1 front kind of guy. A lot of the guys on here go through a set at a time. I have a tendency to slide the rear a bit going into curves. Just the way I grew up riding. Tried to smooth it out the last few years but old dog isn't learning new tricks, YMMV.
  7. And the Dunlop RoadSmart II's are about 161.76 a set. These are sport touring tires Dunlop Sportmax Roadsmart II Rear Motorcycle Tire | Tires and Wheels | Rocky Mountain ATV/MC *The Dunlop Sportmax Roadsmart II is a re-emergence of the... $94.88 for the rear and; Dunlop Sportmax Roadsmart II Front Motorcycle Tire | Tires and Wheels | Rocky Mountain ATV/MC *The Dunlop Sportmax Roadsmart II is a re-emergence of the... $66.88 for the front. Just another choice out there. 😁
  8. I should have known......there is a YouTube video for everything!
  9. You still put it together pretty much the same as a rivit style but do you tighten 1 nut a bit, then tighten the other nut a bit then go back to the other till they break off? I have a chain breaker/riveter. They sent a new fangled master link.......no instructions for it tho
  10. Yeah I'm in my 60's now. Most nights I'm in bed by 8:30 - 9:00 PM. Wake up 5 - 5:30 AM. Same here work kicks my arse. We got bought by another company that is all about the dollar. Not fun to work anymore, counting the days till retirement. When I do ride my focus is down to half a day at best. Kick stands up at 9 means by 3 PM I'm tired focus wise and by 5 PM if we aren't close to the room I'm getting pissy wanting a shower and a couple of beers. The 50's didn't seem to change me as much as the 60's have. I drive 1000 to 1200 miles a week doing service calls so I really don't feel like riding the bike. Happy to be off the road now. Used to when i was younger the driving all week didn't bother me. Couldn't wait to get on the bike. Used to get on the bike after work and go by friends places and we would ride around just to ride around. Don't get the urge like I used to. Did my last motorcycle trip to Mountain Home, AR for Push mountain and the little dragon end of September and just rode the 1st time since then last Saturday. Rode the bike around the lake, 48 miles and that was enough. So far as what to do to liven it up a bit..........not really sure. I'll stay tuned for sure. Someone puts out a good idea I'm all in.
  11. 318 miles.......11 curves. Don't open your chips outside. They are soggy in 5 minutes. The only reason to have a bike is to bar hop!
  12. Changing out my chain and sprockets. Did you go with a larger rear sprocket or a 1 tooth smaller front sprocket? I had gone 1 tooth smaller on my 16 tooth front to a 15 tooth on my ZRX1100 and that was with a 530 chain and had no ill effects. It put me just right on 2nd and 3rd gear through the twisties. I don't ride anymore much above 100 MPH so it shouldn't hurt "My" top end. Can't see where a 1 tooth smaller front would hurt on the FJ either. Guy has a

EK 525 SRX2 Quadra X-Ring Chain 110 Links Natural on ebay for $79.61 free ship.

Sprocket Center has front and rear steel JT sprockets for 61 bucks plus 7 bucks shipping.

I can cut a link off for the 1 less tooth on the front. Yes I'm trying to get 2nd gear a little lower for tight technical twisties, 35-50 MPH using 2nd and 3rd gear. As it is I find myself using 1st at times. Do you think the 1 tooth smaller will pull it down enough or should I just leave it stock and adj myself?

    1. betoney

      betoney

I have used both a -1 tooth in the front and +2 in the rear at different times, the final ratio is very close.

      Stock 16/45 = 2.81

      -1 front 15/45 =3.0

      +2 rear 16/47 = 2.93

With the 15 on the front you can get away with stock length chain, with the 47 on the rear I use a 112 link chain.

The reason I eventually went with +2 on the rear instead was rumors of smaller front sprockets causing quicker chain wear due to tighter turn radius, not sure if that is true but the final ratio was close enough I figured better safe than sorry.

I really like the change of either -1 front or +2 rear, it really brings the engine to life and only raised the highway cruising rpm by a few hundred.

One thing to note though, since the is acceleration will now be a little more aggressive, if you have any fueling/snatchy throttle, it will be more evident.  I have my ECU flashed and bike default to A-mode but my fueling isn't 100% perfect, still have an ever so slight lurch with on/off throttle, I have just learned to use smoother roll on/off while ripping through the twisties and not close the throttle 100%.

Let me know what you think after you try it out.  👍

  13. Well there ya go! I'm putting my tires and rims back on the bike this morning. Since the 1st of the year I've had both flu's. The stomach virus version one 1st and the sore throat version 2nd. The last 2 years I've used 1 of my 6 days each year. This year I've used 3 days by the 1st few days of February. Oh well get it over with! Supposed to be sunny and 61 today, 1 degree over my age so I can ride, yeet! Should be a nice weekend in New Orleans too. Nothing like the ride of a bike with new tennies! Just looked at the weather map and it seems the tail of the last front is still around you in New Orleans. Riding may be hit and miss.....😕
  14. My brother lives down there in Mid-City. Haven't made it down there in a few years. Used to go down there for French Quarter Fest but I've been using all my time off for motorcycle trips. Dead and Company are there the 2nd weekend of Jazz Fest this year......I can hear Bob Weir calling.....🔊
  15. Good Luck! I'm here in NW Louisiana and have an old Big Dog motorcycle shop that does Harleys now to change mine. 5 years ago he was 40 bucks a tire, mount and balance. Last year it was 50 buck and he explained to me that the cost was for a 1/2 hour of shop time, hence 50 bucks. This spring it is now 55 or 110 bucks for a front and rear mount and balance. I use him because the dealers here say you have to buy the tire from them and if you bring the tire/rim in off the bike it's 40 bucks.....but again you have to pay their price for the tire. So the ole biker dude I feel just broke the camels back! Went looking at a decent tire change machine and something that an old weak dude in his 60s can use to mount and balance without hurting myself. Seems it comes in under the tax return amount this year and should take 4 years to pay off in my current 7-9 thousand miles a year. That's 2 sets of tires at 220 bucks a year. Isn't she a beaut? Classic Model Tire Changer Ultimate Package | No-Mar Tire Changer If someone else has ideas I'm open but need something I can attach to my concrete floor and will be stable. This 1 also has an option for a 2" receiver hitch mount. Back to getting a tire changed in New Orleans, call around. My dealer says he can't trust where I get my tires from for liability reasons. Buying his means 287.00 for a Roadsmart III plus mounting and balance of 40 bucks plus our 10 % sales tax in Louisiana means approx 359.70 for a rear tire and mount. My price now is 96 bucks for a roadsmart II and 55 busks cash for the mount and balance w/tax. That's 151.00 w/tax which is better. Good luck in your search!
  16. I guess he is like the owners of 2 of the 3 V-Maxes I bought are. They don't understand the right wrist controls everything. And should the right wrist get out of control on you, pull in the clutch and all the craziness stops. Poor guys, got good deals on 2 V-Maxes because of thinking they are "Scary". Here's a pic of a 1999 I got for 6 grand cash money!
  17. Looks like unstoppable force hits unmovable object. OUCH! Be careful on that MT-10
  18. Me too! You can get these on ebay around 26 bucks I think I remember. Yup, here it is...... Double Bubble Windshield WindScreen For Yamaha FJ-09 MT 09 Tracer 2015-16 BLK E2 Windshield WindScreen Double Bubble Kawasaki ZX14R...
  19. Run up to 120 MPH and see what happens on the way.........
  20. I'm still laughing my azz off on the pretense of "Mounting my bike". 😂🤣😂🤣
  21. I have used this company on eBay for years with zero problems. Great sealed AGM battery and at 37.90 and you change it out every 4th year it's 10 bucks a year. That's 79 cents a month. Fits the stock spot perfectly , sealed AGM Battery means No Problem to lie on it's side just like stock. Write the date you get it on the side with a sharpie. They warranty 18 months. I just buy another at 4 years and have used them since 2007 or so. Batteries for the bike, riding lawn mower, Yamaha ZUMA. They work at a reasonable price. YMMV. 22. I moved back home, NW Louisiana in the spring of 2007 when I was 47. Now I'm 60 and I've found I didn't move far enough south. At 60 I don't ride in temps less than my age. If it's under 60 I have lost the urge. I'm like a few of the older guys here. I ride for fun......not out of necessity. I do get to ride all winter except a few weeks of cold snaps. Still there is no salt on the roads here for sure. Even in Louisiana I put heated grips on my '15 FJ, and use them! Insurance made me buy the FJ instead of at the time FZ designation. To State Farm, FZ means hooligan and FJ means Sport Touring. FZ09 = $250 and FZ10 meant $327 every 6 months. FJ = $73 every 6 months. The MT10 does look like fun!!!! 😁 I'm lucky to get 3,500 to 4,000 miles out of a rear tire with the FJ. Hate to see how many I'd go through with that. Might have to change my stock portfolio, WOOT!
  23. Mellow, I've been using the Roadsmart II's . You can get a front and rear for the price of a rear Roadsmart III.
