Your Previous Ride?

Recommended Posts

Searched for a couple of diffn't topics, but didn't see a thread of this sort.

So what was your previous ride and what brought you to the FJ-09?

I had a 2002 Kawasaki ZZR1200 that I loved and spent about 8 yrs, 45K miles on.  Just as age crept up, the knee bend was getting to me on longer rides.  So, went with what I told my wife was my "retirement bike".   A 2009 Concours 14.  Which, was my previous bike to the FJ-09.  The ZZR deserves honorable mention.  ;-)  After having the Connie for a couple years it was Too HOT in the summer.  I roasted.  I added the heat baffles, which helped, but anything other than Highway speeds, I was roasting. Even a trip home from Harrisburg, PA to Columbus, Oh in over 90 deg weather was painful.  I ride with Mesh riding gear in the summer, no help.  A trip around the Great Lakes, a broken shift cam and a drop later (I repaired the cam), the Connie was traded in on the 2016 FJ-09.
Reason I chose the FJ?  I had so wanted an FJR300, but for some reason fell for the Concours 14 instead.  After the heat issues, I decided I didn't want a full fairing bike any longer.  Also, the weight of the Concours led me to look for a lighter solution, that would still allow me the all day comfort of 600 + mile days.  So, research led me to the FJ-09.  So far, couldn't be happier.  :-)

I also had a 2011 Connie and like you found that it was too heavy and bought the FJ 09 in 2015. It has been a good decision and I couldn’t be happier. There are many add-ons that make the bike even better, such as suspension upgrades, saddle and ecu flashing.

Started riding after I graduated college in '07 and started on a used 2003 Buell XB9R. White with orange wheels. Loved that bike.

A few years later when Buell Motorcycle Company went out of business I bought a brand new 2009 Buell 1125CR in red. For $6k off sticker price! I also loved that bike, but it definitely had a lot of hiccups over the ~32k miles I rode.

While the Buells excelled in the cool and unique factor, they lacked in comfort and practicality. It's not what they're made for.

This led me to the Tracer and all of its glory.

My 2016 FJ09 replaced my 2001 FZ1

Even though I think the Tracer is a close enough cousin, I wonder if Yamaha plans to reintroduce a liter sport touring bike to replace the FZ1—basically the MT-10 "Touring" edition with actual touring kit. Or do you think it would just muddy up their waters (having three sport touring machines: the Tracer, the hypothetical "MT-10 GT," and the FJR)?

I think it would muddy up the waters. Two sport touring bikes are enough. I am not sure I would want the power of an MT-10; the Fj-09 has more than enough power.

Hmmm... I still have my most previous ride a 2014 Yamaha Super Tenere. However during the 50 or so years that I’ve been riding I’ve had a lot of different bikes. I guess I should make a list sometime.

2015 Yamaha FJ-09 "Red Molly"
2014 Yamaha Super Tenere' ES
1999 Suzuki SV650
